Interview: Katherine Leary Alsdorf
Katherine Leary Alsdorf is co-author with Timothy Keller of Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God’s Work (Dutton, 2012). She came to Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City in 2002 to establish the Center for Faith and Work to help people nurture a meaningful integration between their faith and their professional work. Prior to this ministry role at Redeemer, she spent 20 years in the high tech industry. In California, she served as CEO of Pensare, an online management education company, and CEO of One Touch Systems, a hardware/software products company. Before that, she was President of Private Satellite Network, a satellite services company in New York City. She also worked in various consulting, sales, and marketing roles, primarily in the technology sector. Katherine received an MBA from The Darden School, University of Virginia, and a BA in Psychology and Education from Wittenberg University. She became a Christian mid-career in NYC through the ministries of Redeemer Presbyterian Church and has taken seminary classes at Regent College in Vancouver. She has been a core member of the Theology of Work Project
Hybrid garnet crystal growth for thin-disc lasing applications by multi-beam pulsed laser deposition
Composite crystals are of great interest for side-pumped thin-disc laser applications. We present a novel technique for fabricating hybrid films for such applications based upon multi-beam, multi-target Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). A two-garnet example was grown as proof of concept, representing the first known demonstration of controlled, continuous horizontal grading in a PLD-grown crystal. The results of shadow masking experiments and the suitability of such a method for growth of the desired structures are also discussed
An observation of a transverse to longitudinal emittance exchange at the Fermilab A0 photoinjector:
An experimental program to perform a proof of principle of transverse to longitudinal emittance exchange has been developed at the Fermilab A0 Photoinjector. A new beamline, including two magnetic dogleg channels and a TM110 deflecting mode radio frequency cavity, were constructed for the emittance exchange experiment.
The first priority was a measurement of the Emittance Exchange beamline transport matrix. The method of difference orbits was used to measure the transport matrix. Through varying individual beam input vector elements, such as input x, x', y, y', z, or momentum and measuring the changes in all of the beam output vector's elements, output x, x', y, y', z, and momentum the full 6X6 transport matrix was measured. The measured emittance exchange transport matrix was in overall good agreement with our calculated transport matrix.
A direct observation of an emittance exchange was performed by measuring the electron beam's characteristics before and after the emittance exchange beamline. Operating with a 14.3 MeV, 250 pC electron bunch, longitudinal input emittance of 21.1+/-1.5 mm.mrad was observed to be exchanged with output horizontal emittance of 20.8+/-2.00 mm.mrad. Diagnostic limitations in the longitudinal output emittance measurement did not account for an energy-time correlation, thus potentially returning values larger than the actual longitudinal emittance. The horizontal input emittance of 4.67+/-0.22 mm.mrad was observed to be exchanged with the longitudinal output emittance of 7.06+/-0.43 mm.mrad. The apparent longitudinal output emittance growth is consistent with calculated values in which the correlation term is neglected.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 160-164)by Timothy W. A Natural History Study of Timothy Syndrome
Abstract Background Timothy syndrome (OMIM #601005) is a rare disease caused by variants in the gene CACNA1C. Initially, Timothy syndrome was characterized by a cardiac presentation of long QT syndrome and syndactyly of the fingers and/or toes, all associated with the CACNA1C variant, Gly406Arg. However, subsequent identification of diverse variants in CACNA1C has expanded the clinical spectrum, revealing various cardiac and extra-cardiac manifestations. It remains underexplored whether individuals with the canonical Gly406Arg variants in mutually exclusive exon 8A (Timothy syndrome 1) or exon 8 (Timothy syndrome 2) exhibit overlapping symptoms. Moreover, case reports have indicated that some CACNA1C variants may produce a cardiac-selective form of Timothy syndrome often referred to as non-syndromic long QT type 8 or cardiac-only Timothy syndrome, however few reports follow up on these patients to confirm the cardiac selectivity of the phenotype over time. Methods A survey was administered to the parents of patients with Timothy syndrome, querying a broad range of symptoms and clinical features. Study participants were organized into 5 separate categories based on genotype and initial diagnosis, enabling comparison between groups of patients which have been described differentially in the literature. Results Our findings reveal that Timothy syndrome patients commonly exhibit both cardiac and extra-cardiac features, with long QT syndrome, neurodevelopmental impairments, hypoglycemia, and respiratory issues being frequently reported. Notably, the incidence of these features was similar across all patient categories, including those diagnosed with non-syndromic long QT type 8, suggesting that the ‘non-syndromic’ classification may be incomplete. Conclusions This study represents the first Natural History Study of Timothy syndrome, offering a comprehensive overview of the disease’s clinical manifestations. We demonstrate that both cardiac and extra-cardiac features are prevalent across all patient groups, underscoring the syndromic nature of CACNA1C variants. While the critical role of long QT syndrome and cardiac arrhythmias in Timothy syndrome has been well recognized, our findings indicate that hypoglycemia and respiratory dysfunction also pose significant life-threatening risks, emphasizing the need for comprehensive therapeutic management of affected individuals

The paper considers Timothy Snyder's applied methodology of history. Snyder's original field of interest as a professional historian was historical biography, but it did not take him long to put transnational history at the centre of his attention. The author posits that Snyder's practice in this historiographic paradigm has laid the foundation for his greatest academic achievements, leading to him being recognized as one of the best historians working today

Timothy Snyder’s "Bloodlands". Critical comments on the construction of historical landscape
Jürgen Zarusky's text is an extensive deconstruction of Timothy Snyder's narration presented in Bloodlands. The narration is based on the assumption, that both regimes – Nazi and Soviet – and their extermination practicies were similar. In Bloodlands Stalin's crimes are presented as a form of ethnic extermination. Thus Snyder suggested ideological kinship between both dictators without analysing specific ideologies. Although the author specifies the differences between these two ideologies he does not ask about their significance to the enemy image and extermination practicies. Snyder's narration concentrates excessively on Poland – as the core of “bloodlands”. In the closing chapter of the book Poles are depicted as the actual martyrs of “bloodlands” in Poland, as well as on the territory of the Soviet Union. Yet up to this day there are ethinc gorups – like Sinti and Romany - who have to fight for the recognition of their tragic experiences as the victims of crimes commited by German authorities. The author also does not mention about the victims of the agressive wars against the Soviet Union. Thus the point of Bloodlands is not to present all the victims of totalitarianism and the war, all the victims from “bloodlands”, but to present only the victims selected by the author.

Tekst Jürgen Zarusky'ego to obszerna dekonstrukcja narracji Timothy Snydera zaprezentowanej w książce Skrwawione ziemie. Zasadza się ona na założeniu, że oba reżimy - niemiecki i radziecki - oraz ich praktyki eksterminacyjne były bardzo do siebie zbliżone. W książce przedstawiono stalinowskie zbrodnie masowe jako formę etnicznej eksterminacji. W ten sposób Snyder zasugerował ideologiczne pokrewieństwo między obu dyktatorami, nie podejmując się analizy konkretnych ideologii. Chociaż wymienia różnice między nimi, jednak nie pyta o ich znaczenie dla obrazu wroga i praktyk eksterminacyjnych. Narracja Snydera nazbyt koncentruje się na Polsce jako jądrze „skrwawionych ziem”. Polaków przedstawia w końcowym rozdziale jako właściwych męczenników „skrwawionej ziemi”, tak w samej Polsce, jak na terenie Związku Radzieckiego. Tymczasem niektóre grupy muszą do dziś walczyć o uznanie swojego tragicznego losu prześladowanych, jak choćby Sinti i Romowie, którzy masowo byli mordowani przez nazistowskie władze. W Skrwawionych ziemiach nie pojawia się słowo na ich temat. W książce nie znajdują także odbicia ofiary wojen zaczepnych, szczególnie skierowanych przeciwko Związkowi Radzieckiemu. W pracy Snydera nie chodzi zatem o wszystkie ofiary totalitaryzmu i wojny, w tym także nie wszystkie z terenów „skrwawionych ziem”, lecz o ich wybór dokonany przez autora
Katherine Jones, Lady Ranelagh (1615-91): science and medicine in a seventeenth-century Englishwoman’s writing
Katherine Jones, better known to scholars as Lady Ranelagh, was one of the most eminent, politically influential and intellectually respected women in seventeenth-century England. By the time of her death in 1691, she had the rare honour of having been esteemed by every ruler and his government from Cromwell to William and Mary. She was active in diverse intellectual networks across most of the seventeenth century, including the Great Tew Circle, the Hartlib Circle, and the ‘invisible college’, and was associated with many Fellows of the Royal Society during the first three decades of the Society’s existence. As pious as she was intellectually dexterous, Lady Ranelagh elicited respect and admiration from a group of contemporaries who were remarkably diverse in their political opinions, religious views and social status.
Over the past decade, there have been several brief surveys of Lady Ranelagh’s life and works; this, however, is the first doctoral thesis to focus exclusively on her. By drawing on over one hundred of her letters and three receipt books associated with her, together with references to her in the diaries of her contemporaries and extant letters written to her, this study contextualises her medical and scientific writings in contemporary religious and socio-political thought. By manipulating generic conventions and employing a rhetoric of modesty, Lady Ranelagh presented her intellectual contributions in a manner appropriate for a gentlewoman. Her extant manuscripts make Lady Ranelagh a representative case study of how women could participate in the radical medical and scientific advances of seventeenth-century England. This interdisciplinary approach creates an informed conversation between two subjects which rarely interact — history of science and medicine, and early modern women’s literature — to consider the material practice and social networks of a remarkably important, but hereunto almost ‘lost’, woman
The effect of relative plasma plume delay on the properties of complex oxide films grown by multi-laser multi-target combinatorial pulsed laser deposition
We report the effects of relative time delay of plasma plumes on thin garnet crystal films fabricated by dual-beam, combinatorial pulsed laser deposition. Relative plume delay was found to affect both the lattice constant and elemental composition of mixed Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) and Gd3Sc2Ga5O12 (GSGG) films. Further analysis of the plasmas was undertaken using a Langmuir probe, which revealed that for relative plume delays shorter than ~200 µs, the second plume travels through a partial vacuum created by the first plume, leading to higher energy ion bombardment of the growing film. The resulting in-plane stresses are consistent with the transition to a higher value of lattice constant normal to the film plane that was observed around this delay value. At delays shorter than ~10 µs, plume propagation was found to overlap, leading to scattering of lighter ions from the plume and a change in stoichiometry of the resultant films
Crystalline garnet Bragg reflectors for high power, high temperature, and integrated applications fabricated by multi-beam pulsed laser deposition
Crystalline Bragg reflectors are of interest for high power, high temperature and integrated applications. We demonstrate the automated growth of such structures by shuttered multi-beam Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). Geometries include 145 layer stacks exhibiting >99.5% reflection and pi phase-shifted designs. A crystalline grating strength-apodized sample was grown by mixing plumes to obtain layers with custom refractive indices. Peak reflection wavelength was tuneable with incident position, samples withstood temperatures of ~750 °C and film and substrate have been shown to withstand incident pulsed laser fluences of up to ~33 Jcm-2
