Symbol functions for symmetric frameworks (Pre-published)
We prove a variant of the well-known result that intertwiners for the bilateral shift on ℓ2(Z) are unitarily equivalent to multiplication operators on L2(T). This enables us to unify and extend fundamental aspects of rigidity theory for bar-joint frameworks with an abelian symmetry group. In particular, we formulate the symbol function for a wide class of frameworks and show how to construct generalised rigid unit modes in a variety of new contexts.Ye
The parabolic algebra revisited
The parabolic algebra Ap is the weakly closed operator algebra on L2(ℝ) generated by the unitary semigroup of right translations and the unitary semigroup of multiplication by the analytic exponential functions eiλx, λ≥0. It is reflexive, with an invariant subspace lattice LatAp which is naturally homeomorphic to the unit disc (Katavolos and Power, 1997). The structure of LatAp is used to classify strongly irreducible isometric representations of the partial Weyl commutation relations. A formal generalisation of Arveson’s notion of a synthetic commutative subspace lattice is given for general subspace lattices, and it is shown that LatAp is not synthetic relative to the H∞(ℝ) subalgebra of Ap. Also, various new operator algebras, derived from isometric representations and from compact perturbations of Ap, are defined and identified
The parabolic algebra on Lp spaces
The parabolic algebra was introduced by Katavolos and Power, in 1997, as the SOT-closed operator algebra acting on L2(R) that is generated by the translation and multiplication semigroups. In particular, they proved that this algebra is reflexive and is equal to the Fourier binest algebra, that is, to the algebra of operators that leave invariant the subspaces in the Volterra nest and its analytic counterpart. We prove that a similar result holds for the corresponding algebras acting on Lp(R) , where . In the last section, it is also shown that the reflexive closures of the Fourier binests on Lp(R) are all order isomorphic for 1 < p < ∞
Projective plane graphs and 3-rigidity
It is shown that a simple graph which is embeddable in the real projective
plane is minimally 3-rigid if and only if it is (3,6)-tight. Moreover the
topologically uncontractible embedded graphs of this type are constructible
from one of 8 embedded graphs by a sequence of vertex splitting moves. In
particular the characterisation of minimal 3-rigidity holds for a triangulated

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The first-order flexibility of a crystallographic framework
Four sets of necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the first-order rigidity of a periodic bond-node framework \C in \bR^d which is of crystallographic type. In particular, an extremal rank characterisation is obtained which incorporates a multi-variable matrix-valued transfer function \Psi_\C(z) defined on the product space \bC^d_* = (\bC\backslash \{0\})^d. In general the first-order flex space is the closed linear span of polynomially weighted geometric velocity fields whose geometric multi-factors in \bC^d_* lie in a finite set. It is also shown that, paradoxically, a first-order rigid crystal framework may possess a nontrivial continuous motion. Examples of this phenomenon are given which are associated with aperiodic displacive phase transitions between periodic states
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
