Expansion of the Zone of Keratinized Tissue for Healthy Implant Abutment Interface Using De-epithelialized Amnion/Chorion Allograft

    No full text
Keratinized tissue around implants is beneficial for soft tissue stability and esthetics. The aim of this investigation is to show the use of amnion/chorion membrane to increase the keratinized tissue. Fifteen patients were grafted with the allograft at the first or second stage of implant surgery. The mean values of keratinized tissue were 1.27 ± 0.46 mm, 2.00 ± 0.38 mm, 2.80 ± 0.78 mm, and 3.27 ± 0.80 mm at the initial evaluation and 7, 15, and 60 days postsurgery (prosthetic delivery was at day 60), respectively (P <.001). Most increase occurred between 7 days up to the prosthetic delivery. Use of the amnion/chorion membrane seems to improve keratinized-tissue expansion

A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams

    No full text
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Topic alignment between two texts is found to increase author verification precision, and an authors writing style is found to change over time, but not more significantly after 3 years than after 1 year.Information ArchitectureWISElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Synthesis and characterization of new macrocyclic and acyclic schiff base ligands and metal complexes / Karimah Kassim

    Get PDF
A series of macrocyclic ligands of 6,13~diphenyl-1,8-dihydro-2,3:9,10-dibenzo- 1,4,8,11 -tetraazacyclotetradecane-4,6,11,13-tetraene (dptaaH2) and their methoxy, methyl, nitro, bromo, and chloro derivatives as well as their Co(ll), Ni(ll) and Cu(ll) complexes have been successfully synthesized. The ligands and their complexes are characterized by elemental analysis (CHN), infrared, 1H and 13C liquid and solid-state NMR spectroscopies, magnetic susceptibility as well as X-ray crystallography. An x-ray investigation carried out on the macrocycle dptaahb suggests that the nitrogen atoms of the ligand are almost co-planar. A cyclic voltammetry study in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) shows redox potentials suggesting a irreversible electron transfer phenomenon for Co(dptaa), Co(N02dptaa) and Cu(Brdptaa). Tetradentate acyclic ligands and complexes of N,N-ethylenebis- (salicylideneimine), N,N-phenylenebis(salicylideneimine), bis(2-hydroxyacetophenone)ethylenediimine, bis(2-hydroxyacetophenone)phenylendiimine with Co(ll), Ni(ll), Cu(ll), Mn(ll), Sb(lll) and Bi(lll) complexes have been prepared. The bidentate chelate ligands of N,N'-bis(4-chlorobenzylidene)ethane-1,2- diamine), N,N'-bis(4-chlorophenylethylidene)ethane-1,2-diimine, N,N'-bis(4- methylbenzylidene)ethane-1,2-diimine with Co(ll) and Ni(ll) complexes are also prepared. The structures of the ligands and complexes are elucidated by elemental analysis (CHN), infrared,1H and 13C NMR, conductivity measurements, magnetic susceptibility as well as x-ray crystallography. The x-ray investigation of N,N'-bis(4-methylbenzylidene)ethane-1,2-diamine reveals that it is centrosymmetric about the central point of the ethylene bond and posseses E configuration across the azomethine (C=N) bond. The x-ray crystal structure for N,N'-bis(4-chlorobenzylidene)ethane-1,2-diamine is obtained to reveal that the crystal packing is stabilized by weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds, forming a three dimensional network. The macrocyclic and acyclic Schiff bases and their complexes are screened against E. coli, Pseudomonas sp., Streptococcus sp., Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi for antibacterial activity. From the results, it could be concluded that the complexes are better antibacterial agents than their respective free ligands. Attempts on synthesis of other Schiff base ligands and complexes derived from 1,8-napthalenediamine and 2-aminothiophenol are also reported

The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law

    Get PDF
Abstract The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals

Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

Primary stability of self-tapping dual etched implants

BAcKGROUND: The aims of this study were to enumerate the primary implant stability quotient (ISQ) value of self-tapping dual etched implants and to explore the influence of parameters such as implant length, implant diameter, age, gender, implant location and osteotomy preparation on the ISQ value. METHODS: Retrospective data from clinical worksheets given to participants during two implant courses held between the periods of 2013 to 2014 were evaluated. A total of 61 implants were considered based on the inclusion criteria. The effects of parameters such as implant diameter, implant length, age, gender, implant location and osteotomy protocol on ISQ values were analyzed. RESULTS: Mean ISQ value for all implants was 67.21±9.13. Age of patients (P=0.016) and location of implants (P=0.041) had a significant linear relationship with the ISQ values. Within the age limit of the patients in this study, it was found that an increase in one year of patient’s age results in 0.20 decrease in ISQ value (95% cI: -0.36, -0.04). However, placing an implant in the posterior maxilla may negatively affect the ISQ with a likely decrease in primary stability by 6.76 ISQ value (95% cI: -13.22, -0.30). cONcLUSIONS: The results suggest that the mean ISQ achieved by the participants were comparable with the range reported for this particular type of implants. The patient’s age and location of implants were elucidated as the determinant factors of primary implant stability

The European Commission and the Future of Europe

This article examines the Commission's preferences and preference formation in relation to the Convention and the negotiation of the Constitutional Treaty. Opposing rational choice accounts, which explain Commission action in terms of the tendency of bureaucratic actors to seek to maximize power, status and opportunities, it argues that the Commission is best seen as an internally differentiated arena, from which preferences emerge as a result of complex interactions that entail the use of power, institutionalized myths and routines. It contends that the Commission was an ineffective performer in the debate on the future of Europe. As well as committing tactical and strategic mistakes, the Commission was disadvantaged by the explicitly political nature of the exercise and the opportunity structure of the Convention compared to previous IGCs. A third argument is that the ratification and post-ratification process reveal the current limitations on the Commission's ability to influence debates about the future of the Union. Its historic vocation as the engine of integration implies one course of action, while being cast as part of the problem suggests another
