‘My Verses Are the Children of My Blood’: Autobiography in the Poetry of Kostas Karyotakis

Kostas Karyotakis (1896-1928) is one of the most important Modern Greek poets. His poetry not only influenced several other poets, but it also attracted critics’ interest. Former critics dealt with Karyotakis’ poetry and spoke about the relation between life and work in his poems. Nevertheless, they did not analyse extensively certain poems, which reflect clearly the poet’s personal experience. In addition, other critics attempted to analyse and see Karyotakis’ poems as independent entities, isolated from the poet’s life. While the results of such an approach were interesting, indeed, in fact they do not show the real meaning of the poems. Although such theories are useful and productive, when reading poets who made their life an important part of their poetry, biography is a key element for the interpretation of their works; thus a New Historicism approach is preferred.  My purpose in this paper is to show the close relation between life and work in Karyotakis’ poetry through a parallel focus on life and poetry. Going beyond the results of previous critique, I intend to show how Karyotakis’ poetry alludes to his personal experience.         </jats:p

Odysseas Elytis and K.G. Karyotakis: I know him no longer...? (Modern Greek poets, influences)

    No full text
Although he often gave the impression that he rejected K.G.Karyotakis’s life-attitude and aesthetic choices, Odysseas Elytis assimilated the older poet’s achievements into his own poetry; he also embraced the deeper vision of Karyotakis, a vision that the suicide poet did not manage to maintain himself, defeated as he was by pain and sorrow. On a surface level, Elytis is a son or, better yet, a younger brother of Karyotakis; his ‘anxiety of influence’ urged him against his older brother in an ‘agent’ that is very similar in character to the literary battles among poets described by Harold Bloom. On a deeper level, and irrespective of any considerations of influence or reaction to that influence, Elytis’s early poetry is distinctly marked by the poetic presence of Karyotakis, and his latter poetry shows his perfect assimilation of the poetic achievements of the old poet into the system that constitutes his own poetics

The translation s of the Greek poet Constantine Karyotakis as well as the influence of French poets in its works constitute the subject of this study. This thesis falls within the scope of applied linguistics, translation studies and comparative litterature. The subject is examined both diachronically and synchronically. After presentation of the poet and his works, we examine the French influence in Greece and, thereafter, in the poet's works, which are distinguished in those influence by poets already translated in Greek and those inflenced by poets appaearing in the French Anthology "Poètes d'aujourd'hui". Insofar as the translated works are concerned, they were studied not only in terms of linguistics and sociolingistics but of pragmatics as well. We also investigate the transfer of the cultural elements in the translated text, and issue considered as one of the most difficult problems on translation. Furthermore, we looked into the topics and the functions of the translations in the works of Karyotakis. Having taken into considration the intercultural value of the translations we compared some of these translated works to those translated by others : a study of the translation stategies adopted as well as the translator's identity as an intercultural mediatorMONTPELLIER-BU Lettres (341722103) / SudocSudocFranceF

Kostas Karyotakis (1896-1928): did the great Greek suicidal poet suffer from syphilis?

    No full text
Kostas Karyotakis is one of the most important Greek poets. His works reflect his existential, pessimistic and satirical tone. He was born in Tripolis, studied Law and spent most of his life working as a public servant. Since 1922 he was aware that he was suffering from syphilis. The disease seems to be the reason why he never accepted the full love of Maria Polydouri, a Greek lyric poet. Karyotakis' conventional life and his many detachments made him feel depressed, a fact that has led many to believe that a clinical depression caused his suicidal ideation. However, the fear of neurosyphilis appears to be the most decisive factor that led to him committing suicide in Preveza. This view is supported by a poem he wrote about the disease, the words of his contemporaries and his suicidal note

Τέλος θα αναδειχθούν οι δια-εικονικές σχέσεις του υπό-εξέταση καρέ με ζωγραφικά έργα του μεταπολεμικού καλλιτέχνη της Βαϊμάρης, Otto Dix.This article will be examining the intermedial adaptation of Kostas Karyotakis’ novel, O Oneiropolos, to a graphic novel, by Dimitris Vanellis and Thanasis Petrou. Intermediality, intericonicity and intersemiotic translation, are concepts overlapping and interconnected. Through the case study of the graphic novel, O Oneiropolos, the writer aims to examine these terms and their interrelationship. What will be examined in the first part is the way Karyotakis’ narrative language is intermedialy adapted, into the comic language, by the graphic novel’s writer, Vanellis. At the same time, the writer will also examine the way the designer Petrou, translates the narration from the verbal to the visual system. The visual translation by Petrou, is clearly inspired by the “Karyotakian” atmosphere. From colors and hues to brushstrokes and icongraphy, Petrou makes use of the unfamiliar, the grotesque and the carnivalesque to render Karyotakis’ famous “gothic” aesthetics. In the second part, the research will focus, on the comic’s second frame, depicting a violently raped and murdered female body, due to its peculiar semantic dissonance with the text-source. The graphic novel’s creators make, according to the author, an enormous semantic leap, in the process of interpreting and translating Karyotakis’ words. This overtly subjective translation of meaning raises questions regarding femininity, sexuality, violence and representation, in the medium of comics. For the analysis of this dissonance, the author will examine the motif of the fetishized, dead, female body, through an iconographic approach of the modern (late 19th to 20th century) history of art. In the European art of this period, one can notice a repetition of this motif from Millais’ white-washed Ophelia, to the grotesque Lustmord culture of Weimar and the popular comic’s modern heroines. Inter-iconic relationships will be pointed out, at this point, between the comic frame under examination and paintings from Weimar’s post-war artist, Otto Dix

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Aspects of the impact of Karyotakis' poetry upon the generation of the 70s: Katerina Gogou, Alexis Traianos and Antonis Fostieris

    No full text
The main issue this thesis deals with is the positive impact that Karyotakis’ poetry exerted to the youngest of the decade of the 70’s poets in terms of the existence, an issue which exists and is involved in the already recognized social perspective of the impact of Karyotakis. On this basis, the establishment of the impact of Karyotakis during the war period is examined in the first chapter exclusively as a negative term by the most acknowledged critics of the 30’s, as well as the critical semantic reconstruction of the term “new movement of Karyotakis” for the generation of the decade of 70’s as an open field semantically, not to mention the possibility of adoption of the mythological encasement of the interwar poet or the connection or receiving Karyotakis’ work based on the social question, bearing in mind the adequacy of Karyotakis’ poetry for fruitful exploitation, when it comes to its realistic frame, without attempting to embellish reality, when it comes to the reflection of the aspects of the social mechanism malaise of the era. Next, from the second up to the fourth chapter, an attempt is made to identify the assimilated approach of Karyotakis’ poetry in the poetry of Katerina Gogou, Alexis Traianos and Antonis Fostieris as the most representative cases of the common idea of devoting their work on the fringes of existence, leading up to the level of nihilism. Simultaneously, the artists’ work examines the existential depth, which derives from the deep internal disorganization. On the other hand, the analysis of the already mentioned poets of the 70’s in this thesis belongs under the umbrella of the wider examination of the individual units of their poems per collection, in combination with the most important critical analysis of their work. Consequently, the target is not the constant pursuit in each and every verse of the defining characteristics so to verify the impact of Karyotakis, but the high degree of convergence with their precursor poet on the common basis of the conversion, as it will be clear from each study separately, into a tool of penetration into the existential abyss, recommending in this way the margins of society as the last destination. Thus, someone could conclude that the artists’ poetry, in line with that of Karyotakis, are an integral part of deciphering the cosmic nothing together with the constant internal gap, as it is expressed according to each poetic individuality separately, due to their fruitless goals to the restricted for the same reason field of existence, as well as the infinity of nonexistence.Βασικό ζητούμενο προς διερεύνηση στην εν λόγω διατριβή αποτελεί ο γόνιμος αντίκτυπος της καρυωτακικής ποίησης σε νεότερους ποιητές της γενιάς του’ 70 ως προς την έντονα υπαρξιακή της διάσταση στην οποία εμπεριέχεται και συμπληρώνεται η ήδη αναγνωρισμένη κριτικά κοινωνική προοπτική της καρυωτακικής επίδρασης.

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
