Second order nonlinear optical properties of poled polymeric thin Films

    No full text
In this thesis the electrical poling and second order non-linear optical, NLO properties of guest-host, side-chain and main-chain polymers are studied. In bisphenol-A polycarbonate, BPA-PC guest-host systems an enhancement in both the thermal stability and linear electro-optic coefficient can be observed. This can occur in guest- host systems where hydrogen bonding can arise. One example is DAN/BPA-PC guest- host polymer. In side-chain materials a commercially available polymer P-4VP can be poled. This material shows moderate electro-optic response following poling. A novel main-chain type material, where the NLO group is rigidly bonded to the main-chain in a 'V shape is studied for its poling and second-order NLO properties. The rigidity of the polymer is so high that only chain-end groups contribute to the response

Between the Bombs: Exploring Partial Ceasefires in the Syrian Civil War, 2011–2017

    No full text
Previous research on ceasefires in armed conflicts has primarily focused on the aggregated country-level of analysis. By contrast, this article contributes by examining the local-level dynamics of local ceasefire arrangements. In particular, this study examines a novel set of 106 local-level ceasefire arrangements in the Syrian Civil War, reached between the years 2011 to 2017. Most (72 percent), but not all, of the ceasefire arrangements were respected during the stipulated time period. We argue that informal and domestic peacemaking should outperform formal and external approaches in managing conflicts with multiple rebel groups, ongoing violence, and different fronts such as in Syria. We find that the presence of insider mediators (“insider-partial”) as well as confidence-building measures between the belligerents are positively associated with successful ceasefire arrangements, whereas explanations emphasized by previous research—external third-party mediation as well as various indicators of quality of agreement—fail to explain outcomes of ceasefires. Yet, we also find some evidence indicative of a selection effect in that external mediators are associated with more difficult conflict situations. The study of local ceasefires in the Syrian Civil War can stimulate further examinations of the micro-dynamics of peacemaking in civil wars, including the causes and consequences of local ceasefires

Comparing traditional sports and electronic sports

Electronic sports (eSports) viewership numbers have been growing over the years. Video games such as League of Legends, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, or Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft have a large following. During the League of Legends regular season matches, 250,000 people regularly tune in to watch the games. Professional players such as Enrique “Xpeke” Cedeno-Martinez have 470,000 Twitter followers. In this study, we built two visualizations to explore similarities and differences between eSports and traditional sports. We focused on the salaries earned by eSports players and the emergence of a new way of interacting with professional players via live streaming. We then compared how fan loyalties differ between the two fields.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. Finite element analysis for the twin metro tunnel constructed in Ankara Clay, Turkey

    No full text
The paper presents the geotechnical properties along the route of the 9,325 m twin tunnel metro route in the Greater Municipality of Ankara. Convergence measurements taken during tunnel construction are presented and discussed. In addition, the convergence of the twin metro tunnels was analysed by means of a 2D plane strain finite element (FE) analysis. The FE model estimations and the field measurements are compared. © Springer-Verlag 2006.Murat Karakus, Aydın Ozsan and Hakan Başarı

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
