Get PDFThe book From History to the Present: The People of Bursa is composed of discussions on the professions, temperaments, and lives of individuals who came to Bursa from various races, religions, beliefs, and regions.
The first chapter, titled “Seminars on Islamic Thought,” features articles that focus on understanding and recognizing the human being within the context of Islamic thought. Prophets—who are considered key milestones in the evolution of humanity—are examined, with particular emphasis on the final prophet, Muhammad Mustafa (peace be upon him), as an exemplary human model. Following the prophets, the first generation of Islam—the Companions (Sahaba)—is addressed as a model community.
The second chapter presents the types of individuals who appeared in Bursa starting from its conquest. Beginning with Osman Bey, who founded the Ottoman Empire and initiated the transformation of Bursa, and Emir Sultan, a key figure in the city\u27s spiritual formation, the seminars continue with a focus on Hisar Neighborhood, the city\u27s first settlement and neighborhood. Alongside madrasahs and scholars, religious scholars and dervishes who played crucial roles in shaping the intellectual life of Bursa are also included in the study. The guild of artisans and tradesmen—an essential pillar of society and a key factor in Bursa becoming a center of civilization—is discussed with the intent of shedding light on the present day.
The book does not overlook the presence of non-Muslims in Bursa. Groups that shaped Bursa’s demographic makeup—such as converts (muhtedis), exiles, slaves, and concubines—are also discussed. Special attention is given to the migrant population that emerged after the Ottoman-Russian War of 1293 AH / 1877–1878 CE—commonly known among the public as the 93 War. Among these, Bulgarian, Western Thracian, Batum-region immigrants, and Albanian-origin migrants are presented as case examples.
The Uludag Region Turkmens—who settled in Bursa after its conquest and formed the foundation of the city\u27s Muslim population—are introduced with historical and socio-cultural perspectives. The final topic of the book is titled “Bursa Cemeteries and Their Inhabitants” and covers those who spent their final moments in Bursa and are buried in its cemeteries.Tarihten Bugüne Bursa İnsanı kitabının içeriği her ırktan, dinden, inançtan, bölgeden Bursa’ya gelen insanların meslekleri, meşrepleri ve yaşantılarının ele alınmasıyla oluştu. Birinci Bölüm “İslam Düşüncesi Seminerleri” ismine uygun düşecek şekilde İslam düşüncesinde insanı tanıma ve anlamaya yönelik yazılara yer verildi. İnsanlığın gelişiminin temel işaret taşları olan peygamberler ve son peygamber Hz. Muhammed Mustafa (sav) örnek insan tipleri olarak ele alındı. İslam’ın öncü kuşağı/ilk nesli sahabe örnek topluluk olarak hemen peygamberlerden sonra işlendi.
İkinci Bölümde fetihle başlayan Bursa’daki insan tiplerine yer verildi. Osmanlı’yı kuran ve Bursa’nın yeni şekline kavuşmasında ilk hamleyi yapan Osman Bey ve Bursa’nın manevî şekillenmesinin etkili isimlerinden olan Emir Sultan ile devam eden seminerler, Bursa’nın ilk yerleşim yeri ve ilk mahallesi olan Hisar Mahallesi’yle devam etti. Medrese ve ulemanın yanında Bursa’nın zihinsel şekillenmesinde önemli vazife gören ilim erbabı ve dervişler çalışmada yerlerini aldı. Toplumun en önemli yapı taşı olan ve şehrin medeniyet merkezi haline gelmesinde önemli işlev gören esnaf teşkilatı günümüze ışık tutacak şekilde tanıtılmaya çalışıldı.
Bursa’da sadece Müslümanlar değil, gayr-i Müslümler de yaşadığı için onlar da unutulmadı. Bursa’nın nüfusunu şekillendiren mühtediler, sürgünler, köleler ve cariyeler ile özellikle Rumî 1293 Miladî 1877-1878 yılları arasında gerçekleşen Osmanlı-Rus Savaşından -halk arasındaki tabiriyle 93 Harbinden- sonra gerçekleşen göçlerle birlikte ortaya çıkan göçmen/muhacir nüfus göz ardı edemezdi. Bunlar içerisinden de çoğunluğu teşkil eden Bulgaristan, Batı Trakya, Batum yöresi göçmenleri ile Arnavut asıllı muhacirler örnek kabilinden ele alındı. Bursa’nın Müslüman nüfusunun temelini teşkil eden ve fetihle birlikte buraya yerleşen Uludağ Yöresi Türkmenleri de tarihi ve sosyo-kültürel yönleriyle tanıtıldı. Kitabın son konusu ise “Bursa Mezarlıkları ve Sakinleri” adıyla son nefeslerini Bursa’da verenlerin bulunduğu Mezarlıklar oldu
