    Kansas Public Health Sanitarians (also known as the Sanitation Program) was created as part of Medical Health Services, which was established by the reorganization of the Kansas State Department of Health in 1962. The Medical Health Services Sanitation Program became known as Public Health Sanitarians in 1968. The Medical Health Services Sanitation Program was formerly the Sanitation Services Section of the Local Health Services Division, which became known as Medical Health Services in 1962. Reports for 1964-1966 are found under Medical Health Services (Sanitation Program). The Sanitation Program was absorbed into the Hospital Facilities Section of the Division of Medical-Dental Health Services in the reorganization of the Kansas State Department of Health in 1970.The staff of sanitarians consists of the Chief Sanitarian and four area sanitarians. The Chief Sanitarian is responsible for the supervision of the staff of district sanitarians. The district sanitarians furnish environmental sanitation consultative services, and promote and enforce environmental sanitation. They also perform field inspections in the enforcement of state laws. The district sanitarians serve those communities having local health departments on a consultative basis. The areas not served by local health departments are covered by direct service. The activities of the district sanitarians are divided into three major fields: adult care homes, maternal and child health, and environmental sanitation. Each of the major fields is subdivided into type of activity performed. The district sanitarians evaluate adult care homes for environmental health and safety. Routine follow-up field visits are often necessary. They have the responsibility of evaluating children's boarding homes or foster homes for safe water supply, adequate sanitary sewerage disposal, and health hazards in and around the home. They also serve as consultants to the personnel of the local health departments as well as to city or county officials upon request. Assistance to county health officers is given as requested in the evaluation, investigation, or inspection of public school facilities, private water supplies, nuisance complaints, insect and rodent control, recreation camps, mobile home parks, garbage and refuse, and other services for which the county health officer is responsible but may have insufficient time
