Kansas Insurance Department, Commission and Superintendent - Annual Reports (1871-1999).
A centennial history of the Kansas Insurance Department appears at the beginning of the 101st Annual Report (1970/71) of the Department.
Annual reports issued after 1999 can be found in the KGI Online Library separately under the Kansas Insurance Department. The Kansas Insurance Department was established by an act of the Kansas State Legislature in 1871. The chief officer was given the title of Superintendent of Insurance, and up until 1900 was appointed by the Governor. Since 1900 s/he has been elected by the people at the general election. The name of the chief officer was changed to Commissioner of Insurance by the Legislature in 1927.

The Kansas Insurance Department has four major functions. These include regulating and reviewing the companies that sell policies in the state to make sure they are solvent and comply with insurance laws and regulations; educating consumers about insurance, such as through publishing brochures and rate guides on all kinds of insurance coverage, providing speakers on numerous insurance topics, and preparing vital public service information to mass media; helping consumers when they have disputes with insurance companies; and licensing resident and non-resident agent-producers to sell insurance products in Kansas.
