Data Repository for Coupled density and inertia effects on solute trapping at fracture intersections: multiscale experiments and pore-scale simulations
This dataset contains ImageJ macros for image sequence processing, MATLAB scripts for light intensity–concentration calibration, and OpenFOAM case files supporting the experiments and simulations described in the manuscript. The ImageJ macros enable cropping and noise removal of raw image stacks. The MATLAB scripts extract image frames at specified PVI, reproduce the calibration process, and generate depth-averaged concentration profiles using the calibration curve. Preprocessed data are also provided. The OpenFOAM directories include all solver files, meshes, and setup files to simulate coupled density–inertia effects at fracture intersections with the ScalarBoussinesqPimpleFoam solver. Output can be visualized in ParaView or other .vtk-compatible software.Density-driven flow and fluid inertia jointly influence solute transport in fracture networks, with broad implications for hydrogeological and subsurface engineering systems. While their individual effects are well recognized, their combined impact remains underexplored. This study integrates pore-to-network-scale visualization experiments and numerical simulations to investigate the effects of their interplay on solute transport at fracture intersections. At the network scale, 3D flume experiments revealed localized tracer trapping near intersections, driven by density-induced convection and inertia-induced vortices. At the intersection scale, millifluidic experiments and pore-scale simulations elucidated how density contrast, flow imbalance, and fluid inertia govern such solute trapping. Maximum trapping occurs when bottom fracture flow rate is 10% higher, which maximizes mass entry and limits loss. This imbalance promotes vortex retention and prolonged solute residence, producing breakthrough curve tailing. Simulations in rough-walled fractures confirmed these dynamics. Digitized fracture network data from Bristol Channel Basin, UK
The file (Bristol_fracture_network.mat) is a Matlab v5 mat-file with two variable:
- node_xy: a matrix with x and y locations of all the discretization nodes
- node_connectivity: a connectivity matrix. Numerical simulation setup for single mineral dissolution in a single pore channel
These are C++ script files for OpenFOAM to perform flow and reactive transport with rock dissolution. The files run on OpenFOAM with a dbsFoam solver which is part of porousMedia4Foam. The domain construction in the case folder requires funkySetFields, a module of swak4Foam.We conducted pore-scale numerical simulations for single mineral dissolution for two-dimensional and three-dimensional systems using OpenFOAM. Particle image velocimetry data characterizing flow and turbulence fields at free-flow-porous media interface
The released data consist of two-dimensional (2D) instantaneous velocity fields measured by PIV and a time-averaged 2D velocity and Reynolds shear stress fields. The measurement section of about 0.043 m (horizontal) × 0.17 m (vertical), located downstream about 2 m from the inlet of the flume, is illuminated by a 532 nm continuous-wave laser with 2 watt of output power (LRS-0532, Laserglow Technologies). Total 6,000 images within the FOV filled with seeding particles of 20 μm in diameter are recorded at 20 frames/s using a CMOS camera (2050 × 640 pixels, 8 bits, Flare 2M360 MCL, IO Industries) through a lens (AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D, Nikon). The time delay between subsequent images is set to 0.002 s. We post-processed the recorded images using the open- source PIV software, PIVlab (Thielicke and Stamhuis, 2014), for generating the instantaneous 2D velocity fields at a sampling frequency of 10 Hz. The interrogation window size is 32 × 32 pixels with 50% overlap, generating 39 × 127 velocity vectors in the measurement section.The data includes two-dimensional (2D) instantaneous velocity fields and time-averaged 2D flow properties. We obtained the velocity data in an experimental flume, which is composed of an open channel and underlying porous media, at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The PIV is a non-intrusive laser optical measurement technique, which measures flow at the high spatiotemporal resolution by estimating cross-correlations between laser-illuminated subsequent images recorded by a high-speed camera. We used the PIV-measured 2D flow fields to validate the results of numerical flow simulations based on Large Eddy Simulation. The main objective of this study is to investigate pore-scale flow effects on solute transport across open channel- porous media interfaces. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
