Simultaneous Evaporation Cu and Sn from Liquid Steel
In order to understand evaporation refining of tramp elements in molten ferrous scrap, Cu and Sn, a series of experiments were carried out using liquid-gas reaction in a levitation melting equipment. Effect of S and C, which are abundant in hot metal from ironmaking process, was examined and analyzed by employing a comprehensive evaporation kinetic model developed by the present authors (Jung et al. in Metall Mater Trans B 46B:250-258, 2014; Jung et al. in Metall Mater Trans B 46B:259-266, 2014; Jung et al. in Metall Mater Trans B 46B:267-277, 2014; Jung and Kang in Metall Mater Trans B ExternalRef RefSource10.1007/s11663-016-0601-5RefSource RefTarget Address="10.1007/s11663-016-0601-5" TargetType="DOI" ExternalRef, 2016). Evaporation of Cu and Sn were treated by evaporation of individual species such as Cu(g), CuS(g), Sn(g), and SnS(g), along with CS2(g). Decrease of Cu and Sn content in liquid steel was in good agreement with the model prediction. Optimum conditions of steel composition for the rapid evaporation of Cu and Sn were proposed by utilizing the model predictions.1132Ysciescopu

Understanding abnormal potential behaviors at 1st charge in Li2S cathode material for rechargeable Li-S battery
In this study, electrochemical behaviors of Li2S such as a large potential barrier at the beginning of the 1st charging process and a continuous increase in potential to similar to 4 V during the rest of this process were understood through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and electrochemical evaluations for a full utilization of Li2S. The large potential barrier to the 1st charge in Li2S can be caused by the presence of insulating oxidized products (Li2SO3 or Li2SO4-like structures) on the surface; simple surface etching can remove them and thereby reduce the potential barrier. Even though the potential barrier was substantially reduced, the electrochemical activity of Li2S might not be improved due to the continuous increase in potential. This increase in potential was related to the polarization caused by the Li2S-conversion reaction; the polarization can affect the utilization of Li2S in subsequent cycles. We speculate that the increase in potential is related to the decomposition of oxidized products such as Li2CO3-like or Li2O-like structures on the surface of the Li2S particles. These findings indicate that the full utilization of Li2S can be achieved by controlling their surface characteristics, especially the surface oxidation products.11114sciescopu
Long-Term Cycle Stability Enabled by the Incorporation of Ni into Li2MnO3 Phase in the Mn-Based Li-Rich Layered Materials
Co-free Mn-based Li-rich layered materials have been attracting a lot of attention due to their high capacity via the additional oxygen redox reaction and their low cost. However, their poor capacity retention and voltage fade upon cycling remains a problem for practical applications. Herein, we report on long-term cyclability of a Co-free Mn-based Li-rich layered material with superior voltage retention for 490 cycles. The developed one-step solid-state reaction, which comprises a thorough mixing and a heating process at high temperature followed by a quenching process, can increase substantially the amount of Ni incorporated into the Li2MnO3 phase, and thereby the resulting material has a robust layered structure caused by the increase in the cation disordering, and a facile electron transfer for the oxygen redox reaction leading to the remarkably improved oxygen redox reversibility for long-term cycles. The findings will provide a new strategy for achieving high performance for long-term cycles in Li-rich layered materials.11Nsciescopu
