Fast Algorithms for Surface Reconstruction from Point Cloud

    No full text
We consider constructing a surface from a given set of point cloud data. We explore two fast algorithms to minimize the weighted minimum surface energy in [Zhao, Osher, Merriman and Kang, Comp.Vision and Image Under., 80(3):295-319, 2000]. An approach using Semi-Implicit Method (SIM) improves the computational efficiency through relaxation on the time-step constraint. An approach based on Augmented Lagrangian Method (ALM) reduces the run-time via an Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers-type algorithm, where each sub-problem is solved efficiently. We analyze the effects of the parameters on the level-set evolution and explore the connection between these two approaches. We present numerical examples to validate our algorithms in terms of their accuracy and efficiency

Fast object recognition using dynamic programming from combination of salient line groups

    No full text
This paper presents a new method of grouping and matching line segments to recognize objects. We propose a dynamic programming-based formulation extracting salient line patterns by defining a robust and stable geometric representation that is based on perceptual organizations. As the endpoint proximity, we detect several junctions from image lines. We then search for junction groups by using the collinear constraint between the junctions. Junction groups similar to the model are searched in the scene, based on a local comparison. A DP-based search algorithm reduces the time complexity for the search of the model lines in the scene. The system is able to find reasonable line groups in a short time. (C) 2002 Pattern Recognition Society. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. ON THE BASIN OF ATTRACTORS FOR THE UNIDIRECTIONALLY COUPLED KURAMOTO MODEL IN A RING

    No full text
We present the long-time dynamics of unidirectionally coupled identical Kuramoto oscillators in a ring, when each oscillator is influenced sinusoidally by a single preassigned oscillator. In this situation, for a large system with N >= 5, it is well known that the synchronized states and the splay-state are the only stable equilibria by Gershgorin's theorem and linear stability analysis, whereas for low-dimensional systems with N = 2, 3 the synchronized state is the unique stable equilibrium. We present nontrivial proper subsets of synchronized and splay-state basins with positive Lebesgue measure in N-phase space. For the threshold case N = 4, we show that the splay-state is nonlinearly unstable by explicit construction of perturbations converging toward the synchronized state asymptotically.

Low-complexity iterative QRD-M detection algorithm for V-BLAST systems

    No full text
A computationally efficient V-BLAST detection scheme on Rayleigh flat-fading channels is proposed. The proposed scheme provides a near-ML performance with significantly reduced complexity as compared to other well-known detection techniques. Moreover. the reduced complexity is independent of signal-to-noise ratio, which is a big practical advantage

Preparation and characterization of hydrophobically modified alginate

    No full text
Biodegradable alginate-derived polymeric surfactants (APSs) with a linear alkyl group (C8, C12, C16) were synthesized by oxidation followed by reductive amination of 2,3-dialdehydic alginate. The oxidized alginates and all APSs were characterized by spectral and X-ray diffractometry analysis. The sonicated suspension test was employed to form self-aggregates in aqueous solution. In the case of 40% CHO-C8 APS, the lowest interfacial tension, 31.5 mNm(-1) was obtained at the c.m.c. value of 1.35 g L-1. A biodegradability test on the 30% CHO-C12 APS system suggested that it would be attacked by a soil microorganism, Aspergillus niger

FAST AND SLOW RELAXATIONS TO BI-CLUSTER CONFIGURATIONS FOR THE ENSEMBLE OF KURAMOTO OSCILLATORS

    No full text
We present asymptotic relaxation estimates to bi-cluster configurations for the ensemble of Kuramoto oscillators with two different natural frequencies which have been observed in numerical simulations. We provide a set of initial configurations with a positive Lebesgue measure in T-N leading to bi-(point) cluster configurations consisting of linear combinations of two Dirac measures in super-threshold and threshold-coupling regimes. In a super-threshold regime where the coupling strength is larger than the difference of two natural frequencies, we use the l(1)-contraction property of the Kuramoto model to derive exponential convergence toward bi-cluster configurations. The exact location of bi-cluster configurations is explicitly computable using the coupling strength, the difference of natural frequencies, and the total phase. In contrast, for the threshold-coupling regime where the coupling strength is exactly equal to the difference of natural frequencies, the mixed ensemble of Kuramoto oscillators undergoes two dynamic phases. First, the initial configuration evolves to the segregated phase (two segregated subconfigurations consisting of the same natural frequency) in a finite time. After this segregation phase, each subconfiguration relaxes to the asymptotic phase algebraically slowly. Our analytical results provide a rigorous framework for the observed numerical simulations.
