Catalytic effects of aluminum butoxyethoxide in sol-gel hybrid hard coatings

    No full text
Hybrid inorganic-organic hard coatings on PMMA substrate were obtained by sol-gel reaction of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane(GPTS), tetramethyl orthosilicate(TMOS) and aluminum butoxyethoxide (Al(OEtOBu)(3)). The catalytic effect of aluminum butoxyethoxide on inorganic condensation and epoxide polymerization has been studied by C-13, Si-29 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. Hardness of hybrid inorganic-organic materials were measured by nanoindentor and mainly influenced by the extent of epoxide polymerization and inorganic condensation of their coating catalyzed by aluminum butoxyethoxide

Measurement of thermo-optic coefficients in sol-gel hybrid glass films

Thermo-optic coefficients (TOC) of inorganic-organic hybrid glass (HYBRIMER) films prepared by sol-gel process of organoalkylsilanes were measured using the prism coupler equipped with auto-controlled hot stage. The spin coated HYBRIMER films composing of silica and methacrylate networks were fabricated for the measurement. Their TOCs are negative and as high as the order of 10(-4), which are comparable to those of optical polymers. It was found that composition of the films, formation of organic network and addition of other elements in the HYBRIMER affect TOCs of the films

Reducing the thermal dependence of silica-based arrayed-waveguide grating using inorganic-organic hybrid materials

This study demonstrates the application of a temperature-independent arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) using a simple hybrid waveguide structure composed of silica core/inorganic-organic hybrid material overcladding layer. The thermooptic effect of the hybrid materials varies over a wide range of temperature and provides athermal characteristics in an AWG. The temperature dependence of the AWG was reduced through the precision control of the thermooptic coefficient of the hybrid materials (Deltalambda =similar to 3 pm/degreesC)

Modification of thermo-optic characteristics of sol-gel inorganic-organic hybrid materials

The effect of the inorganic oxide network on the variation of thermo-optic characteristics (dn/dT) in inorganic-organic hybrid material prepared through the sol-gel process was investigated. The dn/dT values were negative for all samples, and decreased in magnitude with the increasing concentration of the inorganic oxide or heterometallic oxide network. The dn/dT also became less negative with the increase in the degree of inorganic condensation in sol-gel reaction. A negative dn/dT value is consistent with thermal expansion of the material, and it is believed that the value of the dn/dT in our inorganic-organic hybrid materials was principally sensitive to variations in expansion term. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Sol-Gel Innovation Project (SOLIP) founded by Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy (MOCIE) in Korea

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
