    We investigate the relationship between slope aspect, subsurface hydrology, and critical zone (CZ) structure in a montane watershed by examining the orientations of foliation and fracturing and thicknesses of weathered material on north- and south-facing aspects. Weathering models predict that north-facing slopes will have thicker and more porous saprolite due to colder, wetter conditions, which exacerbate frost damage and weathering along open fractures. Using borehole imaging and seismic refraction, we compare the seismic velocity and anisotropy of north- and south-facing slopes with the orientation of fracturing. Fracturing occurs in the same dominant orientations across slopes, but the north-facing slope has more developed and slightly thicker soil as predicted, while the south-facing slope has thicker and more intact saprolite that is highly anisotropic in the direction of fracturing. Our data support hypotheses that subsurface flow is matrix-driven on north-facing slopes and preferential on south-facing slopes. We attribute thicker saprolite on south-facing slopes to heterogeneity induced by competition between infiltration, topographic stress, and permafrost during Pleistocene glaciation. We provide new constraints on subsurface architecture to inform future models of CZ evolution

    Gamma spectrometry of coolant lines of KAMINI reactor

    Gamma spectrometry of the KAMINI reactor coolant lines at the selected spots/locations was carried out during 20kWt power and shutdown using portable spectrometers such as RIIDEye-X, RayMon (Cadmium Zinc Telluride), and hyper pure germanium.133Xe (81 keV),85m Kr (150 keV), and 135Xe (250 keV) isotopes could be identified. The spectra results did not indicate the presence of internal contamination due to any corrosion activation products such as 56Mn, 59Fe, 60Co, and fission products. The gamma radiation level observed during reactor power on the selected locations is only due to the fission product noble gases (FPNGs) and their short-lived radionuclides 88Rb and 138Cs generated and not any pipeline internal contamination.137Cs and trace quantities of 60Co were identified in the mixed bed regenerated liquid. The presence of 137Cs could be attributed due to the tramp fuel fissions

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Sastavni dio stambenih građevina jesu mjesta za grijanje: ognjišta, kamini, kaljeve peći i na njih vezani dimnjaci. Samo su rijetka ognjišta očuvana. Kamini su stariji uređaji, uglavnom vezani na dimnjake radi odvođenja dima. Napa kamina bila je plastični prostomi element te se od najstarijih vremena njezinu izgledu pridavala velika pozomost. Za izradu napa često je služila opeka kao vatrostalni materijal. Dimnjak je građen u vanjskom zidu radi jednostavnijeg izvoda na krov i zaštite od prokišnjavanja. Postava kamina ovisila je o njihovoj namjeni, vremenu nastanka i obliku prostora. Kaljeve su peći otkriće kasnijih stoljeća iako one ne isključuju postojanje kamina, dapače, povezane su s njima. Sve veće prostorije i viši životni standard pridonijeli su razvoju i sve češćoj ugradnji kaljevih peći u stambene objekte. Podrijetlo tih peći vjerojatno treba tražiti u glinenim pećima običnih ljudi, iz kojih su se razvile savršenije kaljeve peći, i to najprije u Austriji i Južnoj Njemačkoj. Prve kaljeve peći, one iz druge polovice 14. i iz 15. st., bogato su ukrašene te su istodobno bile odraz razvoja gotičke arhitekture i umjetničkog obrta. Karakteristično je da razvoj peći na prostorima Srednje Europe određuju kraljevske radionice u Budimu, Višegradu i Nyeku, a modele izrađuju vrhunski umjetnici. U 16. st. u branič-kulama kaštela na granici prema Turcima vjerojatno su ugrađenivane glinene peći slončastim pećnjacima jer su ti zahvati bili ograničeni ratnim uvjetima, manjkom sredstava i relativno malim prostorom kula. Arheološka iskopavanja na svim srednjovjekovnim objektima pokazala su da je kaljevih peći bilo posvuda i da su bile redoviti dio opreme stambenih prostora

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
