This study aims to determine the significance of oral communication for engineers at workplace and oral presentation barriers that hindered oral presentation performance of engineers and engineering students. Employers value effective oral communication and presentation skills of engineers at workplace. However, it remains unclear which barriers hinder oral presentation performance of engineers and engineering students. A mixed method research was employed to collect data from engineers and engineering students using questionnaire survey, recording of oral presentations and semi structured interviews from 2 engineering organizations and 3 engineering universities of Pakistan. A total of 30 engineers and 287 engineering students participated on the quantitative part of the study. Besides that, on the qualitative part 6 engineers and 25 engineering students participated in oral presentations. Among oral presentation participants, 2 engineers and 7 engineering students were interviewed to gain in depth information on significance of oral communication for engineers at workplace and barriers that hindered oral presentation performance of engineers and engineering students. Oral presentations were video recorded and semi structured interviews were taped. Questionnaire data were analysed using Statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS, 15.0) to draw percentages for variables included in the questionnaire pertaining to significance of oral communication at workplace and oral presentation barriers that hindered oral presentation performance of engineers and engineering students. Qualitative data of recorded oral presentations and semi structured interviews were analysed using oral presentation assessment rubric and data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification and content analysis approach. Meanwhile, data from oral presentation assessment rubrics were quantified and analyzed using quantitative approach to draw descriptive statistics based on frequencies and percentages on oral presentation barriers of engineers and engineering students and communication strategies that they employed to overcome communication deficiencies during oral presentations. Findings indicate that oral communication plays a paramount role for engineers at workplace and oral presentation barriers for instance, poor oral communication skill, poor knowledge, low self confidence, stress and nervousness and low motivation hindered oral presentation performance of engineers and engineering students. The findings of this study can be used as a guideline to overcome oral presentation barriers of engineers and engineering students in order to prepare them to be productive engineers and to increase productivity in the workplace

Industry academia collaboration plays paramount role for both stakeholders and there are numerous benefits of that collaboration. This study aims to determine the role of this collaboration and its potential advantages for both the parties. The respondents for this study were 40 working engineers from two engineering organizations of Pakistan. Purposive sampling method was used to draw the participants. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 15.0) to draw percentages for each variable such as gap between technical and non technical skills at workplace and communication skills in engineering curriculum that assists engineering graduates to perform workplace jobs efficiently following graduation at workplace. The results of the study suggest that there is a gap between technical and non technical skills at workplace and the subject of English or communication skills taught to engineering students does not significantly improve communication skills of engineering students. The findings of the study can be used as a guideline to overcome prevailing technical and non technical skills gap at workplace and to add more communication skill subjects in engineering curriculum in order to better train future engineers for the workplace which has become more demanding in terms of skills of engineers compared to past decade engineers. Engineering organizations demand soft skills of engineers to augment its business worldwide. Technical skills alone are never sufficient for engineers to perform workplace jobs efficiently in this age of industrial and commercial advancement. This study aims to investigate oral communication barriers of engineering students that can potentially influence their job performance at workplace. One hundred (100) engineering students were surveyed from an engineering university of Pakistan. Since respondents were drawn as only final year engineering students thus, purposive sampling method was employed. Data were analyzed statistically using computer based software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The gathered information was coded and percentages were determined for oral communication barrier variables included in the questionnaire. The results of the study indicated that poor English language, fear and anxiety, lack of motivation and overcrowded classroom were oral communication barriers of engineering students. The results are in line with other communication studies on oral communication barriers of engineering students available in literature review. These findings would assist engineering universities of Pakistan to prepare better engineers for the workplace

Faced with the traditional or positivist science that stands outside history, culture and language, the author presents the thinking of Sarkar, who does not argue for an anti-science, anti-technology or falls into a science that would exist outside the social and political, but one within context, arguing for a new science of society. This paper raises important questions, such as: in what direction will then move social sciences: towards empathy and interpretation or towards disinterest and distance? Are we close to losing the universal perspectives as power and knowledge are localized and relativized?

PT. BinaInsaniMadinah Palembang is a company engaged in Umrah Tour Services. PT. BinaInsaniMadinah Palembang was encouraged to become a company that promoted the best and professional services to all worshipers. For its business processes, PT. BinaInsaniMadinah Palembang has used a computer by using Microsoft Office application as a media to manage data for pilgrims who order Umrah packages. The problems faced so far are information on umrah pilgrimage sometimes changing so that the lack of pilgrims in getting information on Umrah pilgrimages, the registration process takes a long time because prospective pilgrims must come to the office to fill in the registration form sometimes prospective pilgrims fill out the wrong forms so candidates pilgrims have to fill out a new registration form, it is difficult for companies to recapitulate data reports because the pilgrims' data reports still use archives. Then the information system design is proposed as a solution to these constraints. In the process of development, the author uses an iterative research methodology. Later in the development of the application using notepad ++ as an editor with the language of the PHP program and MySQL as the data storage media. Information about promotions, departure schedules, rituals, activity schedules and online registration are the outputs produced by this applicatio

Pulling threads: Intimate systematicity in The Politics of Exile

The achievements of Elizabeth Dauphinee\u27s (2013) The Politics of Exile are highlighted by means of two juxtapositions. First, Dauphinee\u27s book invites a contrast to novels because it takes the form of a story. Specifically, Dauphinee\u27s portrait of the vilified \u27Serbs\u27 is compared with how the Taliban are treated in Khalid Hosseini\u27s The Kite Runner and Nadeem Aslam\u27s The Wasted Vigil. Second, The Politics of Exile is examined as it emerges from Dauphinee\u27s efforts to overcome the limits of her more academic work. The advantages of Dauphinee\u27s approach relative to our standard research are presented along five dimensions: the responsibility of closure, the purpose of narration, the transparency of the message, how the work is shown, and the role of generosity. This article critiques Dauphinee\u27s silence on the purpose of travel. It closes by suggesting what social theory can glean from The Politics of Exile. Social theorists can learn how to theorize more systematically, to weigh the relationship between the form and content in writing more judiciously, and to probe the deeper purposes of our intellectual life-work more fully. © The Author(s) 2013

Sommes-nous sur le point de perdre les universels étant donné que le pouvoir et la connaissance sont localisés et relativisés ? ou bien s’agit-il d’un nouveau modèle du réel sur le point de se convertir en dominant qui reformule les catégories de « science », « local » et « universel » ?Faced with the traditional or positivist science that stands outside history, culture and language, the author presents the thinking of Sarkar, who does not argue for an anti-science, anti-technology or falls into a science that would exist outside the social and political, but one within context, arguing for a new science of society.
