No full textThe Spoken Wikipedia project unites volunteer readers of Wikipedia articles. Hundreds of spoken articles in multiple languages are available to users who are – for one reason or another – unable or unwilling to consume the written version of the article. Our resource, the Spoken Wikipedia Corpus, consolidates the Spoken Wikipediae, adding text segmentation, normalization, time-alignment and further annotations, making it accessible for research and fostering new ways of interacting with the material.

Music as Gestural Language : Music and Speech in the French Enlightenment
No full textIt is easy to refute the notion that music conveys meanings by pointing out how arbitrary it would be to attribute context-independent conceptual meanings to musical elements. For us modern listeners who are used to listening absolute or pure music this all makes perfect sense. However, we should not forget that music was in earlier periods thought to convey meanings which were not conceptual, but more like the gestural meanings involved in speech intonation, gestures and dance. It is this earlier rhetorical tradition with its corresponding performance tradition we must also take into consideration when we judge whether there are meanings in music or not

No full textKimmo Sarjen toimittamat Sigurd Frosteruksen esseekokoelmat ovat edenneet neljänteen osaansa. Aiemmin ovat ilmestyneet Väri ja valo: Kirjoituksia kuvataiteesta 1903–1950 (2000), Modernin Janus-kasvot: 1902–1935 (2006), ja Arkkitehtuuri: Kirjoituksia 1901–1953 (2010), kaikki Taide-kustantamon julkaisemana.
Frosterus oli paitsi merkittävä arkkitehti, joka on suunnitellut mm. Stockmannin rakennuksen ja Tamminiemen huvilan (jälkimmäisen yhdessä Gustaf Strengellin kanssa), myös laaja-alaisesti sivistynyt kirjallisuuden ja taiteen tuntija. Nyt ilmestyneet esseet esittelevät Frosteruksen ihailemia kuvataiteilijoita, kirjailijoita, arkkitehtejä ja säveltäjiä. Esseet ja kritiikit luovat samalla hyvän kuvan hänen estetiikastaan. Kokoelma tarjoaa kiinnostavan näkökulman viime vuosisadan alun kulttuuri-ilmapiiriin – ja lisäksi myös peilin, josta voi tarkastella oman aikamme estetiikkaa ja sen juuria. Esseet herättävät myös kysymyksen siitä, mihin on kadonnut se tunteiden ja innostuksen palo, joka siivittää Frosteruksen ja hänen aikalaistensa älyllisiä analyyseja
