    ANCIENT THEATERS IN GREECE AND THE CONTRIBUTION OF GEOINFORMATICS TO THEIR MACROSCOPIC CONSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES

    Among the countless monuments of world cultural heritage of Greece, ancient theaters are studied in this work from the engineer’s point of view. With the help of aerial and satellite archeology, and of bibliographic research, their positions were determined and their size characteristics were calculated. Images of three different Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, UAV (Remote Control Helicopter, Balloon, Drone), Ikonos-2 satellite images, and images from Google Earth were used. Remote sensing image processing and its products are also presented, such as Digital Surface Models (DSMs) and the ortho images of the ancient theaters with spatial resolutions ranging from 1cm to 2.5m, referenced to the Greek Geodetic Reference System of 1987 (GGRS 87). In addition, information and conclusions were made through Geographical Information Systems (GIS) about the macroscopic characteristics of ancient theaters, such as orientation (the main orientation of the theaters is from 90ο to 270ο, while for the construction of the theaters the average direction of the winds, which should be lateral, was taken very seriously,), area (the area of the koilon of ancient Greek theaters ranges from 56m2 to 7,640m2), altitude (the altitudes of the ancient Greek theaters range from 6m to 870m), distances from the coastline (ranges from 11m to 42,559m), visibility (ranges from 0.63% to 100%), etc

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     The first reports of autonomous unmanned flight tools come from antiquity, while bibliography shows image capturing platforms from the late 19th century. Over the years, these platforms have altered leading to the present fully automated Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), which capture images of the Earth's surface and its objects. In this paper we will present the historical evolution of the use of image capturing systems’ platforms, their disadvantages, their advantages, and their applications and use in real estate valuations and appraisal studies.During the last years, UAVs have entered the appraisal industry massively. Unmanned aerial vehicles are typically being used to facilitate appraisers on the collection and documentation of the necessary data that need to be reported during the valuation process. The aim of this paper is to identify and report UAVs’ uses during the valuation process by documenting all their applications and useful products. In short, access to hard-to-reach places, such as rooflines and plots of sharp terrain, has been the first and yet one of the most important uses of drones during valuations. Especially in cases of litigation, the detailed description of a property is more than necessary. In addition to other uses, UAVs generally allow appraisers to conduct their jobs more frequently, efficiently, and effectively. It is crucial, however, to adhere and apply all safety targeting regulatory changes if the industry wants to continue using such systems during valuations

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Calculating urban indicators using Remote Sensing utilities and Geographic Information Systems

    The designation of the city limit change and the extraction of urban indicators, such as the change indicators of constructed area, road network and free area evolution, using Remote Sensing, Cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools, reveal the results of intertemporal urban intervention, and allow predicting future alternation of the urban space. Additionally, they consist the basis for a correct forthcoming urban design. For the extraction of the information mentioned above, both the historic center and the modern city of Veria (Greece) are examined in this paper, utilizing urban maps of 1936, 1974 and 1984, aerial photos of 1975 and recent satellite images of 2007. Erdas Imagine 2011® is used for the geometric correction of the aerial photos and satellite images as well as for specifying land cover on satellite images using object-oriented classification. ArcMap 10® is used for the geometric correction of the maps, the correlation of all geographical products, the extraction of urban indicators and the specification of urban space alternation

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
