The Impact of Scientific Knowledge on the Performance of Multinational Corporations
It has long been recognized that R&D plays a key role in the global battle for technological leadership. However, due to intense competition and rivals’ imitations, firms are not always able to reap rewards from their innovations. Mario Kafouros theoretically and empirically examines the impacts of innovation and scientific knowledge on the productivity performance of multinational corporations, and the conditions under which companies benefit from their technological discoveries. Facing the heat: political instability and firm new product innovation in sub‐Saharan Africa
We examine how political instability (PI) affects firms' product innovation and the strategies that firms can employ in response to PI. We argue that while higher levels of PI influence firms' innovation negatively, greater international exposure (through foreign ownership and exporting) can help firms partly overcome this external challenge and innovate. We test these predictions using a dataset of 3000 manufacturing firms across 15 countries from Sub-Saharan Africa. The empirical results confirm a robust and negative effect of PI on firms' product innovation through several mechanisms. They also suggest that all firms in a country, regardless of ownership structure, are equally affected by PI. Finally, higher levels of exporting weaken the deleterious effects of PI on innovation for both domestic and foreign firms. Our study offers insights into the barriers of innovation in emerging economies and explicates why some firms are more innovative than others in politically unstable contexts
The role of internationalization in enhancing the innovation performance of Chinese EMNEs:A geographic relational approach
In attempting to integrate theory on developed and emerging countries, prior research has focused on the antecedents of specific internationalization decisions of Emerging Multinational Enterprises (EMNEs) rather than conceptualizing internationalization as a recurring process. This approach limits the understanding of the ways through which different internationalization paths lead to different performance outcomes. Using a geographic relational approach and a portfolio-level analysis, we demonstrate that the ability of Chinese EMNEs to increase innovation performance is driven by how and where they choose to internationalize over time. Our framework resolves these two strategic choices into six dimensions; namely, entry mode, geographic breadth and depth, cultural and institutional distance, and the economic state of the host country. Accordingly, it explains the geographic relational mechanisms through which these six dimensions influence the benefits and challenges of internationalization and, in turn, innovation performance. Results show that Chinese EMNEs improve their innovation performance where they have a portfolio of subsidiaries that (1) is built through M&As (rather than greenfield investments), (2) is distributed across multiple countries (rather than located in fewer locations), (3) is distant from home in terms of culture (but not in terms of institutions), and (4) is located in emerging (rather than developed) countries, although M&As perform better in developed countries.</p
Acquisitions by emerging market multinationals: Implications for firm performance
This study develops and tests a framework about the resource- and context-specificity of prior experience in acquisitions. Although extant research has explained why multinational companies from emerging countries (EMNCs) acquire companies in developed countries, we have an incomplete and inconsistent understanding of the consequences of such acquisitions for the performance of target firms. First, we show that despite the concerns raised by politicians and the general public in developed countries, the acquisitions made by EMNCs often enhance the performance of target firms. Second, we examine whether the role of EMNCs’ idiosyncratic resources (such as access to new markets and cheap production facilities) and investment experience in enhancing the performance of target firms differs across acquisition contexts. We demonstrate that not all types of resources and investment experience are equally beneficial and, in fact, some types of experience even have a negative effect on the performance of target firms. By contrast, other types of experience that EMNCs accumulate from prior investment enhance the performance of target firms by facilitating resource redeployment and the exploitation of complementarities

This study investigates the way in which acquisitions from emerging
economies impact on the performance of target firms in advanced countries.
The study makes a number of contributions to the international business
literature. Firstly, it extends the resource-based view of the firm by explaining
that both the resources of the target firm and the resources of the acquiring
company play an important role in determining performance outcomes.
Secondly, our theoretical analysis indicates that the performance of the target
firm is influenced not only by its own network, but also by the national and
international network of the acquiring company. Thirdly, this study sheds
light on the strategic fit of the acquisition. According to our analysis, the
performance of the target firm is likely to be maximised when there is a
moderate level of relatedness between the target and the acquiring company
FDI from emerging to advanced countries: some insights on the acquisition strategies and on the performance of target firms
This paper deals with acquisitions from emerging to advanced countries and the performances of target firms. Descriptive statistics is employed to investigate the strategies and the impact of the entry of Emerging Multinational Companies (EMNCs) from Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) on the performance of firms that were acquired in Europe, North America and Japan between 2000 and 2007. Results show that EMNCs not always acquire firms with high pre-acquisition performance and that they do not significantly increase the profitability of target firms after acquisition. Nevertheless, EMNCs contribute to increase target firms’ productivity and sales and to slow down their loss of jobs. We also show the importance of acquisition experience of the acquiring firms. Experienced EMNCs not only acquire firms with higher pre-acquisition performance, but they also contribute to increase more significantly the productivity and sales of the target firms. We finally highlight the differences in the dimensions and in the technology intensity of target firms acquired by experienced and unexperienced EMNCs, in order to provide further insights concerning the strategies and the effects of acquisitions from emerging to advanced countries
