Design-Based Learning As a Vehicle for Mastering Professional Skills

    No full text
This paper discusses the design-based learning (DBL) that was developed by Professor Doreen Nelson and was specifically targeted at school level education. This instructional methodology consists of a series of connected design challenges that serve as the context for learning and enhances the development of professional skills among students. Students approach a design problem by designing and building a three-dimensional product fulfilling a list of criteria. This product then serves as an analogy for learning course content through guided lessons.20-2

The relevance of this experimental study relates from the fact that there is increasing concern on the need for individuals who possess 21st century skills. The constantly evolving society requires people to have professional skills, ideas and the ability to adapt and enhance themselves and their performance. The purpose of experimental study is to discover the influence of Design-Based Learning (DBL) on students’ design skills development, creativity and motivation; their interrelation in the Russian Art and Design Education (ADE). Moreover, to investigate whether the self-created instrument - Toolkit for Studying and Assessing of Design Activity (TSADA) is effective in encouraging creativity and motivation of students during DBL, enabling them to develop and implement design skills and create the product of art-project activity. Study involved 207 Russian ADE field students (M=21.63, SD=3.052). The purposive sampling was used among third-year bachelor students, ranging 19-23 years old. The sample was divided into two groups: control (n=102) where 27 (26.5%) were boys and 75 (73.5%) girls and experimental (n=105) where 29 (27.6%) were boys and 76 (72.4%) girls. Both groups representing diverse ethnicity and varying socioeconomic statuses, but had approximately the same background, level of knowledge and skills. In the experiment, various statistical analysis, such as means (M), standard deviations (SD), inferential statistics (e.g., t-tests, ANCOVA, ANOVA), correlations, regressions, the Rasch analysis, the prediction models, the comparative fit index (CFI), the Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), the ratios of the correlations of the constructs (HTMT), the standardized root mean square residual (SRMR), and the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) were performed. In the pilot study the TSADA was proved effective in Russian ADE, revealing insights on design skills, motivation and creativity (Cronbach’s alpha > 0.90). It showed robust properties in measuring motivation and creativity, with intrinsic (β=0.21, p<.05) and achievement (β=0.54, p<.05) motivation positively impacting creative performance, while extrinsic and failure-avoidance motivation had negative effects on creativity. The main study compared experimental group with DBL under the TSADA treatment and control group with Lecture-Based Instruction (LBI), finding significant improvements of design skills and product of art-project activity in experimental group (M=4.19, SD=0.42). Gender differences were noted, with males showing slightly higher proficiency (M=4.04, SD=0.35), but motivation (β=0.30, p <0.01) and creativity (β=0.22, p <0.05) played more predictive roles in design skill development. The experimental study gives the strong theoretical and practical foundation on design skills, creativity, motivation within ADE and evidence of positive application of self-created TSADA instrument in enhancing art and design competences. It demonstrated how motivation, creativity, students’ design skills and products of art-project activity can be fostered with use of DBL. It provided recommendations for policy makers, researchers, teachers, and other educational stakeholders about constructive and effective methods that should be employed in the class in order to support different learners and encourage them to comprehend educational material. The conducted research expands knowledge in the field of pedagogy, psychology and art and can be useful in enhancing the learning outcomes of students in ADE and overall practice of educators and scholars

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
