W artykule zaprezentowano stanowiska kultury ceramiki wstęgowej rytej odkryte w czasie badań powierzchniowych w ramach zadania „Źródła archeologiczne w rejonie Parku Kulturowego Wietrzychowice”, realizowanego w ramach programu Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego pt. „Dziedzictwo Kulturowe”, priorytet 5, „Ochrona zabytków archeologicznych”. Program ten, rozpoczęty w 2013 r., umożliwił prowadzenie intensywnych badań powierzchniowych oraz zastosowanie na szeroką skalę archeologii lotniczej, prospekcji geofizycznych i geochemicznych, a także badań abiotycznych elementów środowiska naturalnego (por. P. Papiernik, P. Kittel, D.K. Płaza, J. Wicha 2017). Weryfikacyjnymi badaniami powierzchniowymi objęto 4 obszary Archeologicznego Zdjęcia Polski (o nr: 52-45, 52-46, 53-45, 53-46) o łącznej powierzchni ok. 150 km2 (por. ryc. 1). Ogółem, w czasie prac terenowych materiały KCWR odkryto na aż 44 stanowiskach (por. ryc. 2). Wynik ten należy uznać za dość niespodziewany efekt przeprowadzonych prac, bowiem z akcji AZP wykonanej w latach osiemdziesiątych XX wieku, z całego wskazanego terenu znane były tylko dwa stanowiska KCWR (Michałowo, st. 1 i Pasieka, st. 7 – por. J. Pyzel 2010 ), które były oddalone o ok. 20 km od dobrze rozpoznanego skupienia osadniczego KCWR w rejonie Brześcia Kujawskiego (R. Grygiel 2004).Archaeological excavations in the region of today’s Wietrzychowice Culture Park were begun in the 1930s by professor Konrad Jażdżewski himself and were carried on under his supervision in the 1950s. Field works were resumed by the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in Łódź and the Konrad Jażdżewski Foundation of Archaeological Research in 2009. They aim at conducting interdisciplinary research, which would provide a complete picture of the settlement of the Funnel Beaker culture in the vicinity of megalithic cemeteries at Wietrzychowice and Gaj. A very important element of the programme is non-invasive work done as the project “Archaeological Sources in the region of Wietrzychowice Culture Park“, completed as part of the programme of the Minister of Culture and Cultural Heritage, called “Cultural Heritage”, priority 5, “Protection of Archaeological Artefacts”. Field works have yielded artefacts dating back to the period between the late Palaeolithic and the Middle Ages. One of the most important results of the field surveys has been the discovery of a new group of sites of the Linear Pottery culture. Artefacts of that type were unearthed on 44 sites. It is an unexpected result, as the programme of Archaeological Picture of Poland carried out in the 1980s revealed only two such sites on the territory in question, situated 20km away from a well-recognised settlement cluster of the Linear Pottery culture in the region of Brześć Kujawski. The analysis of the pottery unearthed on separate sites clearly indicates the cultural provenience of particular assemblages. In the case of table ware (delicate work) these are fragments of thin-walled, or more rarely mediumwalled forms, made of processed clay (without silt), almost completely void of thinning admixture. In the case of kitchen ware (coarse work) , we can observe vegetation admixture with sand and grog (chamotte) admixture. Delicate vessel pottery is mainly decorated with engraved lines in various patterns, frequently accompanied by note motifs. Decoration on kitchen ware is limited to finger and fingernail imprints and knobs placed in different parts of the vessels

Influence of gluten-free diet on mood disorders and symptoms of depression Katarzyna Wicha1, Aleksandra Pokarowska2 Chair and Department of Epidemiology and Clinical Research Methodology, Medical University of Lublin; ORCID ID: 0000-0001-8822-2182; [email protected] Chair and Department of Epidemiology and Clinical Research Methodology, Medical University of Lublin; ORCID ID:0000-0003-2743-2009; [email protected] Abstract Introduction: Gluten is a complex substance which is a main storage of grains. It can be found in wheat, rye and barley. It is necessary to exclude products high in gluten in patients suffering from such conditions as: celiac disease (CD), wheat allergy or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. However, nowadays it is becoming more common that people not suffering from any above conditions decide to convert to gluten-free diet. Objective: To assess the influence of the gluten-free diet on mood disorders and symptoms of depression. Methods: We conducted a systemic review according to PRISMA protocol. Databases as Pubmed, Scopus were screened systematically. The final number of studies enrolled in this study is 13. Results: In the majority of included studies a significant influence of gluten-free diet on mood disorders and symptoms of depression in patients suffering from such conditions as celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity was detected. In many cases it was noticed that symptoms of depression in children affected by CD are reduced when gluten-free diet is applied. However, some trials showed that, after converting to gluten-free diet, the symptoms of depression increased or it showed no influence of gluten on them. Conclusions: According to the results of the conducted trials the authors of this article came to the conclusion that it is worth considering gluten-free diet as a complementary therapy to the patients presenting symptoms of depression. Nevertheless, further studies with an adequate amount of participants- the ones that are healthy and as well as the ones that suffer from the gluten intolerance- are essential to define the outcomes of the gluten intolerance on the mood disorders. Keywords: Depression, gluten-free diet, anxiety, celiac diseas

Semantics and syntax in sentence comprehension: An analysis of their relationship in time using event-related potentials

The author has granted permission for their work to be available to the general public.A central issue in psycholinguistics is how we process semantic and grammatical information and how these processes interact during online comprehension. Previous studies have yielded inconclusive results on how and when this interaction occurs; it is unclear whether these processes are continuously interacting or if they only interact at a later stage. The purpose of this study was to examine this interaction using the N400 and P600 as indices of semantic and grammatical processing, respectively. Native speakers of Spanish were presented with Spanish sentences containing a target adjective that was either semantically and grammatically correct or disagreed in meaning, grammatical gender, or both with the preceding noun. The adjectives were embedded in a range of weakly to strongly constraining sentences in order to compare the interaction effect as a function of contextual constraint. Semantic violations elicited a robust N400 effect followed by a late positivity, while grammatical gender violations elicited a left-lateralized negativity followed by a P600 effect. The interaction of semantics and gender was observed only at the P600 time window. Interestingly, sentential constraint modulated the onset latency of the N400 to semantic violations, while the P600 due to gender violations was modulated by constraint in a graded fashion. The findings seem to support late interaction models whereby semantic and grammatical processes are initially independent and interact only at a later phase. However, the interaction may be modulated by the amount of contextual information available, as both processors are combining efforts to predict upcoming words.Psycholog

To download, navigate to Log In in the top right-hand corner of this screen, then select Log in with my UTSA ID.The purpose of this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study was to determine if the use of a pheromone collar was beneficial in reducing the stress of young Military Working Dogs (MWDs) transitioning from foster care into the training kennel at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Although the MWD is bred and trained to be robust and resilient, stark changes in environment and lifestyle can be a shock and lead to deleterious physiological and psychological effects, especially in young developing dogs. To evaluate the effect of a pheromone collar on the transition, each MWD that returned from foster between October 2014 and February 2015 had a placebo or treatment collar placed for 4 weeks. Three behavioral assessments and one performance evaluation were conducted and the data was analyzed to determine if the placement of the pheromone collar had any effect on stress-related behavioral factors or performance. The results suggest that there was no reduction of behavioral signs of stress observed between the placebo and treatment groups. The author concluded that the amount of confounding environmental stressors present, and the abrupt transition between private foster homes and a training kennel prove to be too intense for successful alleviation of stress with application of a pheromone collar. Further research should focus on a multi-modal approach to mitigation of stressors.Integrative Biolog

Postmodern Architecture Under Socialism – The Ascension Church in Warsaw-Ursynów

    No full text
The Ascension Church, built in the tower block district of Warsaw-Ursynów 1980-85 to a design by Marek Budzyński and Piotr Wicha, reveals the mechanisms of architectural change under the declining socialist regime in Poland. Based on archival documents, interviews, and press reviews, this article traces the process of form finding and construction of what became one of Poland’s best-known postmodern buildings. The author argues that in the context of the building postmodern design occupied and widened the cracks that had appeared in the authoritarian socialist regime since the 1970s. This is evident in the ‘speaking’ architectural forms that communicated nonconformist ideas, at the level of decision-making and resourcing ‘outside the plan,’ and in relation to post-functionalist city planning around the building. The author also argues that the impact of the Ascension Church, and by extension of similar postmodern buildings in Poland, was based on a reception of postmodernism different to that in Western Europe and North America. Rather than being related to capitalist exuberance and ironic criticism of the architectural discipline, postmodern architecture became connected to a search for lasting values that transcended the mundane socialist every-day life. At the same time it also served as a vehicle for national/patriotic narratives that are influential in Poland to date

A Study of the Relationship Between Code Switching and the Bilingual Advantage: Evidence That Language Use Modulates Neural Indices of Language Processes and Cognitive Control

    No full text
The author has granted permission for their work to be available to the general public.Bilinguals sometimes outperform age-matched monolinguals on non-language tasks involving cognitive control. But the bilingual advantage is not consistently found in every experiment and may reflect specific attributes of the bilinguals tested. The goal of this dissertation was to determine if the way in which bilinguals use language, specifically switching between languages within a conversation (code switching) or refraining from this behavior, plays a role in the sporadic bilingual advantage. The bilingual advantage may arise from managing interference from one language in order to stay in the other, or from inhibiting one language in order to switch into the other. If language switching engages a general inhibitory mechanism to stop speaking in one language and switch to the other, bilinguals who frequently code switch ("switchers") might outperform bilingual "non-switchers" on non-language inhibition tasks. Alternatively, if the bilingual advantage results from frequent inhibition of interference from one language to stay in the other, non-switchers might outperform switchers. The Assessment of Code-Switching Experience Survey (ACSES) was created to obtain an objective, rapid, and reliable measure for Spanish-English bilinguals' code-switching frequency. Then, event-related potentials (ERPs) of bilinguals with varied code-switching frequency were measured during a language task, lending validity to the survey. Semantic violations in code-switched and non-switched words were embedded in sentences as probes to determine how code-switches are processed and whether processing of code-switches is modulated by code-switching experience. The amplitude of a code switching positivity (typically elicited to a code-switch), but not the amplitude of the N400 (typically elicited to a semantic anomaly), was modulated by code-switching frequency. This indicates that code-switching experience affects processing of a code-switch but not semantic retrieval. During Simon and Flanker inhibition tasks, which require suppression of interference from incongruent stimulus cues, a larger N2 ERP was elicited for incongruent versus congruent trials. The amplitude of this N2 congruity effect is typically correlated with inhibitory control ability. The effect was carried by the non-switchers; switchers and monolinguals did not differ. Thus, a general bilingual advantage was not found. Rather, non-switchers manifested a larger neural response linked to inhibitory control of interference, which may result from inhibiting interference in one language in order to stay in the other. However, no difference between switchers, non-switchers, and monolinguals was found on inhibition tasks that required simple response inhibition in the absence of interference. Thus, language production may differentially tap into existing cognitive control mechanisms that are specific to the way in which we are using language. I have interpreted the non-switcher interference suppression advantage in terms of recent studies demonstrating switching benefits in switchers and spatial benefits in bilinguals who use sign language. I suggest refining the definition of the bilingual advantage to include multiple aspects of cognition that are differentially affected by language experience.Integrative Biolog
