Analyse des précipitations en zone sahélienne à partir d'un radar bande X polarimétrique
No full textLes travaux présentés portent sur l'estimation quantitative des précipitations en Afrique de l'Ouest par télédétection active. Il s'agit plus précisément de tester l'apport d'un radar polarimétrique opérant à une fréquence atténuée (10 Ghz, bande X), pour produire des champs de pluie à haute résolution dans une région caractérisée par des précipitations intenses d'origine convective. Le contexte particulier de ces travaux est le programme de validation de la mission satellitaire Megha-Tropiques grâce auquel 2 campagnes de terrain ont permis de déployer un radar polarimétrique bande X au Sahel, au Niger en 2010 puis au Burkina Faso en 2012 et 2013. Un jeu de données radar et pluviographique conséquent, constitué de près de 200 évènements pluvieux a été analysé. Une gamme d'estimateurs radar polarimétriques a été présentée, puis chacun d'eux a été évalué sur la base de comparaisons avec les pluviographes. Une batterie de tests statistiques classiques et l'analyse des distributions fréquentielles d'intensités ont permis de comparer les performances de ces estimateurs. Les performances ont été évaluées sur une gamme d'échelles spatio-temporelles et les problèmes liés à la représentativité spatiale des pluviographes ont été analysés. Au-delà de l'évaluation "ponctuelle" des estimateurs, basée sur des comparaisons directes entre un pluviographe et un pixel radar, on a développé des méthodes originales pour comparer entre eux les champs haute résolution issus du radar et de l'interpolation des pluviographes. En s'inspirant de méthodes héritées de l'évaluation de modèles numériques les structures des champs ont été comparées en autorisant une tolérance spatiale. Ceci permet d'avoir une évaluation pertinente des champs pour des utilisations subséquentes en hydrologie ou pour la validation satellitaire. Ce travail a confirmé et étendu à la zone sahélienne certains des résultats précédents sur les performances de différents estimateurs radar en Afrique de l'Ouest ; il met en avant les très bonnes performances de l'estimation s'appuyant sur le saut de phase différentiel (KDP), et dans une moindre mesure l'estimateur basé sur l'atténuation spécifique (AH). Cette thèse confirme l'intérêt du radar bande X polarimétrique pour l'estimation quantitative des précipitations et l'analyse des systèmes précipitants en zone tropicale. Ce type de radar relativement compact et peu couteux pourrait être appliqué à la surveillance des risques hydrométéorologiques dans les zones urbaines ou le suivi de bassins particuliers (zone équipée de barrage ou haut de bassin montagneux par exemple).This PhD work is on Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) based on Active Remote-Sensing in Africa. As part of the Megha-Tropiques Satellite Ground Validation (MTGV) field campaigns a X-band dual-polarization Doppler radar was deployed in Sahel, West-Africa : during 2010 in Niamey, Niger and during 2012-2013, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Altogether 200 convective systems were observed jointly by the radar and by a network of rain gauges. Based on this data set, a comparative study of several rainfall estimators that use X-band polarimetric radar data is presented. In tropical convective systems as encountered in Sahel, microwave attenuation by rain is significant and QPE at X-band is a challenge. Here, four algorithms based on the combined use of reflectivity, differential reflectivity and differential phase shift are evaluated against rain gauges. The comparisons are carried out for a range of space-time scales. Several comparison methods are proposed. Classical statistical scores are used to evaluate the rainfall time series derived from the radar by comparison with the rain gauges. The spatial structure of the fields and the frequency distributions of the rain rates are also compared. These are important parameters to consider when the rain-fields are to be used for hydrological applications or for satellite validation. The results show that the best performances are for the estimator based on the differential phase shift (KDP); another acceptable solution is the estimation based on the specific attenuation (AH). The overall agreement between the radar derived rainfields and the gauges is high. This PhD work confirms that X-band polarimetric radar is a (relatively) cost effective and quality option for monitoring hydro-meteorological risks in the Tropics
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
