    An Integrated Meta-model for Cloud Application Security Modelling

    AbstractModel-driven engineering (MDE) promises to automate the cloud application management phases, including deployment and adaptive provisioning. However, most MDE approaches neglect the security aspect even if it is considered the number one factor for not migrating to the cloud. As such, this paper proposes a security meta-model that a cloud-based MDE approach can exploit to become security-aware. This meta-model captures both high- and low-level security requirements and capabilities to drive application deployment as well security-oriented scalability rules to guide application re-configuration. It is also coupled with OCL constraints enforcing the security domain semantics. A method for creating re-usable security elements facilitating rapid security model specification conforming to the meta-model is also proposed, to reduce the designer's modelling effort

    Blockchain- and IPFS-Based Data Distribution for the Internet of Things

    Distributing data in a tamper-proof and traceable way is a necessity in many Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios. Blockchain technologies are frequently named as an approach to provide such functionality. Despite this, there is a lack of concrete solutions which integrate the IoT with the blockchain for data distribution purposes. Within this paper, we present a middleware which connects to IoT devices, and uses a blockchain to distribute IoT data with guaranteed integrity. Furthermore, the middleware also offers that data is distributed in real-time via a second channel. We implement our solution using the Ethereum blockchain and the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS)

    Trustworthy Detection and Arbitration of SLA Violations in the Cloud

    In cloud computing, detecting violations of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) is possible by measuring certain metrics, which can be done by both the provider and the consumer of a service. However, both parties have contradicting interests with regards to these measurements, which makes it difficult to reach consensus about whether SLA violations have occurred. Within this paper, we present a solution for measuring and arbitrating SLA violations in a way that can be trusted by both parties. Furthermore, we show that this solution is not intrusive to the service and does not incur a significant overhead system load, but nevertheless provides high accuracy in detecting SLA violations

    Using a Microbenchmark to Compare Function as a Service Solutions

    The Function as a Service (FaaS) subtype of serverless computing provides the means for abstracting away from servers on which developed software is meant to be executed. It essentially offers an event-driven and scalable environment in which billing is based on the invocation of functions and not on the provisioning of resources. This makes it very attractive for many classes of applications with bursty workload. However, the terms under which FaaS services are structured and offered to consumers uses mechanisms like GB–seconds (that is, X GigaBytes of memory used for Y seconds of execution) that differ from the usual models for compute resources in cloud computing. Aiming to clarify these terms, in this work we develop a microbenchmark that we use to evaluate the performance and cost model of popular FaaS solutions using well known algorithmic tasks. The results of this process show a field still very much under development, and justify the need for further extensive benchmarking of these services

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
