    A Detailed Raman Study on Thin Single-Wall Carbon NanotubesPrepared by the HiPCO Process

    The Raman spectrum of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) prepared by high pressure CO decomposition (HiPCO process) has been recorded at nine excitation laser energies ranging from 1.83 eV to 2.71 eV. The characteristic nanotubes features: G band, D band and radial breathing mode (RBM) have been analyzed and compared to those of an arc discharge SWNT material of similar diameter. A strong Breit-Wigner-Fano type (metallic) contribution to the G band was found in the spectra measured with green lasers, while spectra measured with red lasers indicate resonances of semiconducting SWNTs. Analysis of the energy dependence of the position of the D band revealed sinusoid oscillations superimposed on a linear trend. The validity of full DOS calculations for HiPCO materials has been confirmed by a match found between the estimated spectral contribution of metallic SWNTs as calculated from the components of the measured G band and as predicted by the (n,m) indexes of the major scatterers of DOS simulations. The RBM region of the HiPCO spectrum is more complex than usually observed for SWNTs. The analysis performed with a Gaussian distribution and improved fitting parameters leads to a mean diameter and variance of 1.05 nm and 0.15 nm, respectively. A bimodal Gaussian distribution had little influence on the error sum but reduced the standard error slightly. The major spectral features of the RBM could be interpreted using available resonance Raman theory

    Ascribed to the peninsula by the German geographer Zeune in 1808, the term Balkan – a chain of wooded mountains in Turkish – describes the region’s main geographic features. Balkan landscape is indeed characterised by mountain ranges intersected by small plateaus and deep river valleys that give way to narrow plains near the sea. Throughout Balkan prehistory mountains alternately represented borders and zones of contact, whereas the river system played a major role as communication route, connecting inland areas to both the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Specifically focussing on the Balkan Peninsula, this session aims at understanding different aspects of the interplay between human groups and the mountainous landscape and its change over time. One of the main goals is to stimulate a theoretical informed debate based on archaeological evidence by cutting across traditional geographic, methodological, and chronological boundaries and by challenging established assumptions and interpretative frameworks In particular, the following topics will be discussed: 1) Appropriation of resources in a mountainous environment. These are intended as socially produced constructions expressing what people perceived as relevant for their life, and satisfying both physical and social needs. 2) Building local and “global” identities, change and endurance of cultural customs and socio-political relations 3) Mountains as sacred topography. Perception and reshaping of natural landscapes in connection with cult practices and funerary customs

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Application of Natural Resources Indicators to Agricultural Land Management in Slovenia

    Th e group of indicators to establish the impact of land management measures on natural resources in the agricultural landscapes in Slovenia is discussed and identifi ed. Each chosen natural resource indicator is defi ned regarding indicator status, quality parameters of an indicator and indicator costs. The indicators are divided into two subgroups: abiotic indicators and biodiversity indicators, whereby biodiversity indicators are threatened on tree levels: genetic, species and ecosystem level. Th e result is the synthesis of natural resources indicators with the tabular review of their main characteristics, named indicators personal data. With selected indicator group the evaluation and monitoring of management measures regarding sustainability is possible. The weaknesses of some selected natural resources indicators are discussed and the fact that the indicators characteristics are not stable, but are time and space dependable is taken into consideration

    Three-dimensional charge transport mapping by two-photon absorption edge transient-current technique in synthetic single-crystalline diamond

    We demonstrate the application of the two-photon absorption transient current technique to wide bandgap semiconductors. We utilize it to probe charge transport properties of single-crystal Chemical Vapor Deposition (scCVD) diamond. The charge carriers, inside the scCVD diamond sample, are excited by a femtosecond laser through simultaneous absorption of two photons. Due to the nature of two-photon absorption, the generation of charge carriers is confined in space (3-dimensional, 3-D) around the focal point of the laser. Such localized charge injection allows us to probe the charge transport properties of the semiconductor bulk with a fine-grained 3-D resolution. Exploiting spatial confinement of the generated charge, the electrical field of the diamond bulk was mapped at different depths and compared to an X-ray diffraction topograph of the sample. Measurements utilizing this method provide a unique way of exploring spatial variations of charge transport properties in transparent wide-bandgap semiconductors
