Classical machine learning techniques provide effective methods for analyzing data when the parameters of the underlying process lie in a Euclidean space. However, various parameter spaces commonly occurring in computer vision problems violate this assumption. We derive novel learning methods for parameter spaces having Riemannian manifold structure and present several practical applications for scene analysis. The mean shift algorithm on Lie groups is a generalization of the mean shift proce-dure which is also an unsupervised learning technique for vector spaces. The derived procedure can be used to cluster data points which form a matrix Lie group. We present an application of the new algorithm for multiple 3D rigid motion estimation problem from noisy point correspondences in the presence of outliers. The approach performs simultaneous estimation of all the motions and does not require prior specification of the number of motion groups. We present a novel geometric framework to learn a supervised classification model for data points lying on a connected Riemannian manifold. The structure of the classifier is an additive model, where the weak learners are trained on the tangent spaces of th

Using a fixed effect multivariate panel logit econometric model and taking possible endogenity problem into account, we test the hypothesis that foreign bank participation contributes to decrease in banking crises in transition economies in 1990-2006. The results suggest that foreign bank participation decreases the possibility of banking crises, controlling for other factors that may cause banking crises. This paper contributes to the literature by presenting the first empirical evidence on the negative relationship between the actual level of foreign bank presence (or foreign bank concentration) and banking crises for transition countries

The Impact of Globalization on the Rate of E-waste Recycling: Evidence From European Countries

for the implementation of the circular economy and the reduce-reuse-recycle paradigm envisaged by the EU and UNDP. Since the rate of e-waste recycling is one of the most important indicators of the circular economy, it is necessary to identify the factors that affect it, and to determine the degree to which these factors influence it in order to foster e-waste recycling. Using the panel quantile regression technique on panel data including 30 European countries (EU28+2) and the time period from 2008 to 2018, this study analyses the effects of overall globalization and its three sub-dimensions (economic, political, and social globalization) on the rate of e-waste recycling. The results indicate that overall globalization and its three sub-dimensions have a positive impact on the rate of e-waste recycling in 30 European countries (EU28+2) during the estimation period, thus contributing to the circular economy. Therefore, supporting all aspects of globalization (economic, political, and social) will enhance the circular economy

Human Capital and Economic Growth in Türkiye: Long-run Analysis

In this study, the cointegration relationship between human capital and economic growth is examined by using five different economic growth measures and it is tried to estimate the long-term effect of human capital on economic growth for Turkey. The sample covers the period of 1961-2019, and all analyzes were carried out with the ARDL technique. The cointegration test findings obtained from the ARDL bounds test indicate that human capital and economic growth in Turkey are cointegrated and therefore act together in the long run. This common movement remains valid in all four models. In addition, it is seen that there is a statistically significant positive relationship between human capital and economic growth for the four models in the long run. In conclusion, the diagnostic test results show that none of the four different models suffer from autocorrelation and varying variance problems, and each model is stable in terms of parameter stability

    E-commerce and consumer's purchasing behaviour

After its first exposure to the public in 1993, there has been a rapid increase in the use of the Internet for different purposes, particularly for electronic trade. In such a new trade area, there are a lot of issues to be addressed with regard to the consumer's purchasing behaviour. This study analyses the roles of sexual preference, primary place of online access, and online experience as well as demographic and economic factors on the consumer's purchasing decision. Moreover, this study investigates the impact of the potential and/or prevalent critical issues facing the Internet (e.g. taxation of services, privacy, censorship, etc.) on online orders. Surprisingly, sexual preferences have a large significant effect on online purchases. Gay and bisexual people are more likely to shop from the Internet than the other ones. The results, also, suggest that people with more online experiences in a more private and secure environment like home are disposed to order more from the Internet. In addition to that, only the issues of taxation of services and privacy have some statistically significant effects on online purchasing decisions. The former and latter have positive and negative impacts on online orders respectively.

An empirical analysis of the association between natural resource rents and corruption

Introduction In addition to many government failures that many countries have experienced, corruption has been classified as one of the most significant public sector problems. Corruption causes problems in using resources effectively, which is very important in order to reach full level of employment for economies. In this regard, as we will state in the next section, the determinants of corruption have attracted growing attention in both theoretical and empirical researches due to its potential negative externalities for economies. Rent-seeking activities and thus corrupt behaviors find more rooms to arise in countries possessing ample natural resource rents. However, there are few papers in the corruption literature that examine the links between rent-seeking and the level of corruption. Empirically, some papers have revealed the close relationship between rents and corruption (Arezki and Brückner, 2011; Gnimassoun and Keneck, 2015). Theoretically, there is a negative association between competition level and rent-seeking activity, which means that a decrease in the competition level is accompanied by a higher level of rent-seeking activity. Higher rent-seeking activity results in higher level of corrupted behavior by government officials. In this regard, if a firm, which is under the influence of a bureaucrat, has rents, bureaucrat’s motivation for malfeasant behavior such as bribe will be higher. By the same token, an increase in rents will lead to an increase in the corrupt activities (Ades and Di Tella, 1999: 983). Looking at the literature for rent-seeking, it seems that there are various types…. © Peter Lang GmbH Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften Berlin 2019

Do governance indicators play a role in banking crises?

Introduction Institutions have a significant impact on the economic structure through its effect on production, change, investment, savings, and so on (Biber, 2010). The structure called the institution can be defined as rules that determine behavioral relationships between individuals. In this context, the social behaviors, beliefs, manners of private or public spheres, political relations, approaches to other societies, and interactions of these with each other constitute the institutional structure of a country. As can be seen from the definition, the institutional structure takes on a different form for each country and society. This network of relationships, which are naturally related to a cultural area, may change over time as the cultures change with the change of time. When the issue is taken into account from the extent of the impact on the society, the institutions have a structure which can affect the use of natural and human resources. Therefore, countries which are able to develop their institutions can achieve sustainable economic growth trend. In this study, some indicators for the assessment of institutions are utilized. These are six different indicators of the Governance Indicators (GI). These indicators are as follows: Voice and accountability (VOA), political stability and absence of violence/terrorism (PSA), government effectiveness (GOE), regulatory quality (REQ), rule of law (ROL), and control of corruption (COC). Higher scores indicate better governance performance in all indicators except COC. A higher score in COC indicator means less corruption. Kaufmann et al. In this paper, the effect of China's imports on importing countries' inflation is examined. Using data from 1994 to 2003, it is argued that China's export surge is an important contributor to lowering inflation in importing countries. Using fixed and random effect models, we identify a statistically significant negative correlation between the share of a country's imports from China and its rate of inflation.China, deflation, international trade, panel study,
