This work treats the effect of high hydrostatic stress on the high cycle fatigue resistance of metallic materials. The aim is to understand the effect of the mean stress (and more specifically very high mean stresses or load ratios), as well as the effect of a biaxial stress state (where biaxial implies two normal stresses). A vast experimental campaign was undertaken in which high cycle fatigue tests were performed on two materials, a cast aluminum alloy AlSi7Cu05Mg03 and a wrought aluminum 2024-O. The effect of the mean stress and the biaxiality on the fatigue behavior is investigated. Fatigue damage mechanisms are particularly studied. A literature review of different criteria found in the scientific literature is undertaken, with the aim of evaluating the capability of these different models to predict the effect of the mean stress and the biaxiality. A fatigue criterion for predicting the specific behavior of the cast aluminum alloy is proposed. Based on a probabilistic approach, this criterion takes into account the competition between the different damage mechanisms observed. It appears to efficiently predict the fatigue behavior for the two loading types studied. Observations conducted on different metal alloys, show that for very high load ratios, material damage created in the first ¼ cycle can modify the conditions under which fatigue cracks initiate. Consequently, a second fatigue criterion based on coupled plasticity and damage at the mesoscopic scale is put forward. It is shown that this approach is capable of reproducing the major experimental trends and in particular those relative to biaxial loading conditions.

This research presents a topology optimization framework based on the constrained natural element method (CNEM) aiming to solve different topology optimization problems, such as the compliance minimization problem under volume constraint, the volume minimization problem under stress constraints, and the volume minimization problem under high cycle fatigue (HCF) criteria constraints. In order to solve the local minimization problems, the optimality criteria (OC), the method of moving asymptotes (MMA) and the method based on the augmented Lagrangian formula (AL) are adopted respectively. The conventional density filter and neighbor-based filter are used to suppress the numerical instabilities, and the latter has been shown to have better performance under highly irregular discretization schemes. Compared with the topology optimization procedure based on the finite element method (FEM), the proposed method has the advantage of showing greater flexibility and convenience in discretization of complex design domains and the ability to maintain stable output under various discretization conditions. In addition to the use of CNEM in topology optimization to solve partial differential equations (PDEs), another contribution of this study is the incorporation of the HCF criteria into the constraint equations. This study focuses on two types of stress-based HCF fatigue criteria: the first is based on stress invariants, including Sines and Crossland criteria, and the second is based on the critical plane, such as Matake, Findley, and Dang van criteria. Special attention is paid to the optimization results based on different fatigue criteria under proportional and non-proportional loading, respectively. Through cross-checking the topology optimization results produced under different fatigue criteria constraints, it is given which criteria lead to more conservative predictions

The rapid development of metal additive manufacturing processes is driven by their advantages in terms of freedom of design, tool-free manufacturing and the possibility to produce small-series of component. The most mature additive manufacturing processes, such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), are now used to produce structural parts. These parts are subjected to different loadings including fatigue loading. However, the high-cycle fatigue properties of additively manufactured materials remain misunderstood. These properties are complex in particular due to the process-induced porosity of printed parts. In addition, numerous process parameters can influence the microstructure and the porosity of the resulting parts, and consequently their fatigue resistance. In this context, a rapid determination of these properties is necessary in order to optimize process parameters in regards to fatigue properties. In this work, two methods are used to rapidly characterize the fatigue properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy printed with LPBF process. The first one uses ultrasonic fatigue machines to perform high frequency fatigue tests at 20 kHz. The second enables a rapid determination of the fatigue limit of the material by studying its self-heating behavior under cyclic loading. Although promising, these methods are not yet used for dimensioning structural parts within a standardized framework. In this work, rapid characterization tests as well as conventional fatigue tests are carried out on material grades with different microstructures or porosity levels. The goal is to assess the sensitivity of fatigue strength to porosity or microstructure variations, and to verify that the different testing approaches can capture this sensitivity

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
