    Risperidone-induced leukopenia: a case report and brief review of literature

    A Caucasian, male, young adult with recurrent agitated depression and suicidal ideation received lithium and oral olanzapine. His white blood cell count was normal at that time. Due to unsatisfactory response, he received 4 mg/day risperidone. While symptoms improved, leukopenia emerged, specifically directed towards neutrophils. Upon risperidone discontinuation, white blood cell count returned to reference values within 1 week. As symptom control was satisfactory, we attempted no risperidone rechallenge. Accurate blood testing must accompany atypical antipsychotic drug administration since blood dyscrasias are always possible with these drugs. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

    Anatomical and functional correlates in major depressive disorder: the contribution of neuroimaging studies.

    Several studies suggested the neural networks modulating aspects of emotional behaviour to be implicated in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. These networks involve the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and closely related areas in the medial and caudolateral orbital cortex (medial prefrontal network), amygdala, hippocampus, and ventromedial parts of the basal ganglia, where alterations in grey matter volume and neurophysiological activity are found in cases with recurrent depressive episodes. Such findings hold major implications for models of the neurocircuits that underlie depression. In particular, evidence from lesion analysis studies suggests that MPFC and related limbic and striato-pallido-thalamic structures organize emotional expression.     A case of rapid conversion to psychosis of delusional misidentification associated with derealisation, verbal memory impairment and FDG-PET imaging abnormalities

    The delusional misidentification syndromes, occurring within the context of different nosological settings, such as schizophrenia, are psychopathological phenomena related to the experience of depersonalisation/derealisation. Extensive research indicates that individuals meeting specific "prodromal" criteria, such as attenuated psychotic symptoms, brief intermittent psychotic symptoms, or functional decline and family history of schizophrenia have increased risk for impending psychosis. Despite depersonalisation and/or derealisation often precede psychotic onset, they are not included among the prodromal criteria of the Australian-American approach. A 17-year-old boy with acute agitation, violent behaviour and aggression, and dissociative amnesia had a mild verbal memory impairment and temporo-limbic hypometabolism on the positron-emission tomography. The patient was assessed with both the ultra-high risk (UHR) and the basic symptom approaches and was not found to be prodromal with imminent risk of transition to psychosis. He was hospitalised briefly and 2 weeks after discharge he developed delusional misidentification. This case shows that even the integration of both UHR and basic symptoms criteria may give false negatives in the prediction of psychosis, especially in those cases in which a long prodromal phase is absent. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg

    Chronobiology is the study of biological temporal rhythms, including the circadian, weekly, seasonal, and annual rhythms. The term “circadian” comes from the Latin words “circa”, meaning “around”, and “dies [-ēi]”, meaning "day". A circadian rhythm can be defined as any biological process that manifests an endogenous entrainable oscillation of about 24 hours. Circadian rhythm affects physiology, behavior, cognition, and the sleep-wake cycle in mammalians and humans. The master clock located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus has a central role in circadian rhythm preservation. The human circadian time-keeping system is characterized by a composite architecture, with the central brain’s SCN pacemaker and subsidiary clocks in nearly every cell. The sleep-wake cycle is a complex and dynamic phenomenon involving numerous cerebral structures, neuronal network, and neurotransmitters. Sleep is generally divided into non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. NREM and REM phases occur in the course of the sleep with cyclicity. Each phase has typical characteristics, including variations in brain wave patterns, eye movement type, and muscle tone.     Behavioral genetics and criminal responsibility at the courtroom

    Several questions arise from the recent use of behavioral genetic research data in the courtroom. Ethical issues concerning the influence of biological factors on human free will, must be considered when specific gene patterns are advocated to constrain court's judgment, especially regarding violent crimes. Aggression genetics studies are both difficult to interpret and inconsistent, hence, in the absence of a psychiatric diagnosis, genetic data are currently difficult to prioritize in the courtroom. The judge's probabilistic considerations in formulating a sentence must take into account causality, and the latter cannot be currently ensured by genetic data. (c) 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
