Operation Management in Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems: Reconfiguration for Error Handling

    No full text
Reconfigurable manufacturing systems offer quick adjustment of production capacity and functionality in response to unpredictable market changes as being systems designed at the outset for rapid change in system configuration, its machines and controls. During the production process, out-of-ordinary events occur dynamically and unpredictably both at the system (machine breakdowns, change in job’s priorities, etc.) and at the cell level (tool failures, robot collisions, etc.). Such exceptions interrupt the production process by causing errors in the schedule plan (system level) or in the task plan (cell level). Error handling is the policy meant for reacting to errors caused by the occurrence of out-ofordinary events. The reconfiguration ability turns out to be the new technological factor enabling new strategies to handle out-of-ordinary events of the production process. Both economic and performance aspects need to be considered in order to make a decision in support of particular error handling policies such as using reconfiguration. This paper, starting from a simulation case study, highlights advantage of using reconfiguration for error handling. Authors propose an object-oriented high-level control structure for real-time error handling, which integrates the new reconfiguration for error handling technology with the existing reactive scheduling system

    Finite-volume discretizations and immersed boundaries

    No full text
In this chapter, an accurate method, using a novel immersed-boundary approach, is presented for numerically solving linear, scalar convection problems. As is standard in immersed-boundary methods, moving bodies are embedded in a fixed Cartesian grid. The essence of the present method is that specific fluxes in the vicinity of a moving body are computed in such a way that they accurately accommodate the boundary conditions valid on themoving body. To suppress wiggles, tailor-made limiters are introduced for these special fluxes. The first results obtained are very accurate, without requiring much computational overhead. It is anticipated that the method can readily be extended to real fluid-flow equations

Development of an accurate method for advection problems with embedded moving-boundaries

    No full text
An accurate method, using a novel immersed-boundary approach, is presented for numerically solving advection problems. As is standard in immersed-boundary methods, moving bodies are embedded in a fixed, ‘Cartesian,’ finite-volume grid. The essence of the present method is that specific fluxes in the vicinity of a moving body are computed in such a way that they accurately and monotonously accommodate the boundary conditions valid on the moving body. Higher-order accurate discretizations in both space and time are presented. To suppress wiggles, tailor-made limiters are introduced for the special fluxes. The results obtained for linear scalar advection problems are very accurate, without requiring much computational overhead. It is anticipated that the method can be easily extended to real fluid-flow equationsAerospace Engineerin

Spatially-localized time dependent solutions including turbulence and their interactions in 2D Kolmogorov flow

    No full text
In 2D Kolmogorov flow in small aspect ratio domains, spatially-localized solutions such as kink, traveling or time-dependent kink-antikink pars coexist. However, the conservation of the flow rate in the y direction strongly restrict combination of localized solutions and their positioning. We find that by adding a homogeneous flow U y their positioning is controlled and each of localized solutions including a spatially-localized chaos is isolated. Numerical results suggest that these isolated solutions can be elements constructing a whole flow

Characteristics of overlap region in high-Reynolds number turbulent channel flow

    No full text
Direct numerical simulation of the fully developed turbulent channel flows have been carried out at the Reynolds number based on the friction velocity and the channel half width, 2000, 4000 and 8000. A hybrid 10th order accurate finite difference scheme in the stream and spanwise directions, and a second-order scheme in the wall-normal direction is adapted as the spatial discretization method. We observed the plateau profiles in the indicator function corresponded to the von Karman constant. Furthermore, second peak of streamwise pre-multiplied spectra were appeared in the same wall normal height, 300 < y+ < 600, in case of Re = 4000. Nevertheless, the effects of the lager than the channel half height scale on the streamwise turbulent intensity are fixed contributions without dependence on Reynolds number. These results suggested that the new streamwise vortexes are formed between buffer layer and outer layer with increasing of Reynolds number
