    ‘Anne as Pagan, Anne as Queer’ is a critical and creative answer to the question: How do we construct Anne Shirley, and what does she mean to us? This creative research submission is a work of fanfiction, specifically a mash up based on Anne of the Island, L.M.M. Montgomery’s sequel to Anne of Green Gables. In this short work of fiction (under 4 thousand words) Anne is revealed as a changeling, one of the Faerie Folk, and also a being not strictly male or female; sometimes neither, sometimes both. The mash up is based on the last two chapters of Anne of the Island, the scenes in which Gilbert Blythe is seriously ill and Anne realises she loves him. This realisation causes Anne, in this version, to reveal to Gilbert that she is both non-human and not a girl, and to use Faerie magic to save Gilbert’s life. Anne’s revelation causes Gilbert a great relief, as he has been keeping a secret also - that he too is queer. The piece has an accompanying research statement and reflection, that reflects on the ways the contributor/author interprets Anne, as a being troubled by gender, and not strictly gender conforming. The much-loved scene from Anne of Green Gables in which Anne realises she is not wanted by the Cuthberts because she is not a boy is inserted into the mash up (as a memory) as this scene is the principal cause for the contributor’s identification with Anne as a gender non-conforming figure who resists gender expectations.     Decoding autumn phenology: Unraveling the link between observation methods and detected environmental cues

    Leaf coloring and fall mark the end of the growing season (EOS), playing essential roles in nutrient cycling, resource allocation, ecological interactions, and as climate change indicators. However, understanding future changes in autumn phenology is challenging due to the multitude of likely environmental cues and substantial variations in timing caused by different derivation methods. Yet, it remains unclear whether these two factors are independent or if methodological uncertainties influence the environmental cues determined. We derived start of growing season (SOS) and EOS at a mixed beech forest in Central Germany for the period 2000-2020 based on four different derivation methods using a unique long-term data set of in-situ data, canopy imagery, eddy covariance measurements, and satellite remote sensing data and determined their influence on a predictor analysis of leaf senescence. Both SOS and EOS exhibited substantial ranges in mean onset dates (39.5 and 28.6 days, respectively) across the different methods, although inter-annual variations and advancing SOS trends were similar across methods. Depending on the data, EOS trends were advanced or delayed, but inter-annual patterns correlated well (mean r = .46). Overall, warm, dry, and less photosynthetically productive growing seasons were more likely to be associated with a delayed EOS, while colder, wetter, and more photosynthetically productive vegetation periods resulted in an earlier EOS. In addition, contrary to recent results, no clear influence of pre-solstice vegetation activity on the timing of senescence was detected. However, most notable were the large differences in sign and strength of potential drivers both in the univariate and multivariate analyses when comparing derivation methodologies. The results suggest that an ensemble analysis of all available phenological data sources and derivation methods is needed for general statements on autumn phenology and its influencing variables and correct implementation of the senescence process in ecosystem models

    This thesis examines the day to day practices that constituted Anne Lister's (1791-1840) sexuality and sociability within the range of her writings, as well as her society. Anne's writings were a detailed account, spanning her lifetime, of her own love and relationships with the 'fairer sex' (Whitbread 1988, 145). Anne's sociality, seen in her correspondence and plain handwritten journal entries, has been explored by Muriel Green in Miss Lister of Shibden Hall and Jill Liddington in Female Fortune and Nature's Domain (Green 1992; Liddington 1998; 2003). As a gentlewoman of adequate means, Anne has garnered some attention from women's historians interested in her agency within an early nineteenth century social and historical context. Anne's sexual identity has been extensively analysed over the past nearly twenty years by lesbian feminists, queer theorists, women's historians and historians of sexuality concerned with the history and development of modern Western female homosexuality and gender. The source for theorising Anne's sexuality has been the edited selections of the crypted journal entries, published by Helena Whitbread in I Know My Own Heart and No Priest but Love (Whitbread 1988; 1992). However, many analyses deal either with the theorisation of Anne's sexuality or her sociality; the theoretical difficulty with reconciling these categories has troubled the analysis of her complex subjectivity. Drawing upon the archival materials, I have used an interdisciplinary feminist approach to analyse the sexual and social processes of Anne's everyday interactions in her writings. Taking the seven month period of the sojourn to Paris in 1824-25, I have focused upon Anne's textual practices within her journal volume and letters during her residence in Paris, her social practices with the other guests at the guesthouse 24 Place Vendome and her sexual practices with her lover, the widow Mrs. Maria Barlow. The journal volumes and correspondence are a valuable historical record of one gentlewoman's engagement with early nineteenth century British culture

    In-situ monitoring of soil water isotopic composition for partitioning of evapotranspiration during one growing season of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris)

    Field-based quantitative observations of hydrological feedbacks of terrestrial vegetation to the atmosphere are crucial for improving land-surface model parametrizations. This is especially true in the specific context of partitioning of evapotranspiration (ET) into soil evaporation (E) and plant transpiration (T): land surface models are able to compute E and T separately while observed transpiration fractions (T/ET) are still sparse.In this study, we present the application of an on-line non-destructive method based on gas-permeable tubing for the in-situ collection of soil water vapor. This allowed for monitoring of the hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions (δ2H and δ18O) of soil water during a field campaign where ET of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) was partitioned. T/ET estimates obtained with the non-destructive method were compared with the commonly used destructive sampling of soil and subsequent cryogenic extraction of soil water under vacuum. Finally, isotope-based T/ET estimates were compared to those obtained from a combination of micro-lysimeter and eddy covariance (EC) measurements. Significant discrepancies between the values of isotopic composition of evaporation derived destructively and non-destructively from those of soil water using a well-known transfer resistance model led in turn to significant differences in T/ET. This is in line with recent findings on the systematic offsets of soil water isotopic composition values in relation to the water sampling and extraction measurement techniques and calls for further investigation of these isotopic offsets for accurate separation of E from T in the field. These discrepancies were, however, smaller than those observed between δ2H- or δ18O-based T/ET estimates, and more than three times smaller than those between isotope-based and lysimeter-based estimates
