Portrait of Henry L. Klein
Verso: "Henry L. Klein, grandfather of Judge Caroline E. Simon. Served in the Civil War in Company L of the 25th New York Cavalry.
Interview with Arthur L. Klein
Interview in four sessions, February 1979 and April 1982, with Arthur L. ("Maj") Klein, who entered Throop College, the predecessor of the California Institute of Technology, in 1916. When R. A. Millikan arrived as the institute's head, Klein decided to change his major from mechanical engineering to physics in order to work with him, earning his bachelor's degree in 1921 and a PhD in 1925. He stayed on as a research fellow in physics and soon become involved in the activities of the new Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at Caltech (GALCIT), along with Clark B. Millikan and the aircraft designer Arthur E. Raymond. He became an assistant professor of aeronautics in 1929. Klein designed much of GALCIT's 10-foot-diameter wind tunnel, which went into operation in 1929, and he later helped design the Southern California Cooperative Wind Tunnel (1945), which was financed by five Southern California aircraft companies and operated by Caltech. Klein was also responsible for many aspects of the design and testing of important aircraft, including Douglas Aircraft's DC series. He had begun consulting for Douglas Aircraft in 1932; by 1937, he was spending half his time there and half at Caltech, and this arrangement continued until his 1968 retirement from Caltech as a full professor in the Division of Engineering and Applied Science
Automorphisms and coverings of Klein surfaces
In this thesis the theory of automorphisms and coverings of compact Klein surfaces is discussed by considering a Klein surface as the orbit space of a non-Euclidean crystallographic group. In chapter 1 we set out some of the well-established theory concerning these ideas. In chapter 2 maximal automorphism groups of compact Klein surfaces without boundary are considered. We solve the problem of which groups PSL (2,q) act as maximal automorphism groups of non-orientable Klein surface without boundary. In chapter 3 we discuss cyclic groups acting as automorphism groups of compact Klein surfaces without boundary. It is shown that the maximum order for a cyclic group to be an automorphism group of a compact non-orientable Klein surface without boundary of genus g ?3 is 2g, if g is odd and 2 (g – 1) if g is even. Chapter 4 is the largest section of the thesis. It is concerned with coverings (possibly folded and ramified) of compact Klein surfaces, mainly Klein surfaces with boundary. All possible two-sheeted connected unramified covering surfaces of a Klein surface are classified and the orientability of a normal n-sheeted cover, for odd n, is determine

Lactobacillus curvatus subsp. curvatus subsp. nov. and Lactobacillus curvatus subsp. melibiosus subsp. nov. and Lactobacillus sake subsp. sake subsp. nov. and Lactobacillus sake subsp. carnosus subsp. nov., new subspecies of Lactobacillus curvatus Abo-Elnaga and Kandler 1965 and Lactobacillus sake Katagiri, Kitahara, and Fukami 1934 (Klein et al. 1996, emended descriptions), respectively
Lactobacillus curvatus and Lactobacillus sake are each genetically homogeneous species, as indicated by the high levels of DNA homology (≤76%) exhibited by strains of these taxa. However, the results of a numerical analysis of total soluble cell protein patterns and biochemical test data revealed that there are two phenotypic subgroups within L. curvatus and two phenotypic subgroups within L. sake. The overall randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPI)-PCR band patterns obtained for the majority of L. curvatus strains corresponded well to the pattern obtained for the type strain of L. curvatus (strain DSM 20019). However, six strains of L. curvatus had different, but similar, RAPD-PCR profiles and grouped in a separate genetic cluster, which was linked to one of the clusters of L. sake strains. On the basis of these results, differences in biochemical and physiological characteristics, and total soluble cell protein profiles, we describe the subspecies L. curvatus subsp. curvatus subsp. nov. and L. curvatus subsp. melibiosus subsp. nov. for L. curvatus Abo-Elnaga and Kandler 1965 (Klein et al. 1996, emended description). Strains of L. sake grouped in two RAPD-PCR clusters, which was consistent with previous reports of phenotypic heterogeneity. Strains of Lactobacillus bavaricus, including type strain LMG 9844, clustered with the type strain of L. sake (strain NCFB 2714), indicating that these organisms belong to the same genetic group. We propose that strains of L. sake Katagiri, Kitahara, and Fukami 1934 (Klein et al. 1996, emended description) should be reclassified as members of L. sake subsp. sake subsp. nov. and L. sake subsp. carnosus subsp. nov. Strains of L. bavaricus are reclassified as members of L. sake subsp. sake, and the name L. bavaricus Stetter and Stetter 1980 is rejected

The role of imagination in Bergman, Klein and Sartre
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel UniversityThis thesis provides an inter-disciplinary study of selected works by Ingmar Bergman. I explore how key concepts from Melanie Klein and Jean-Paul Sartre apply to the focus on characters in a state of heightened imagination; and the value placed on imagination in the construction of these films. This involves recognition of the way an active response from the viewer is encouraged.
Klein, Sartre and Bergman also attend to contextual factors that challenge any notion of subjectivity as sovereign and the power of imagination is frequently placed in a social context. All three figures develop their ideas within specialised fields drawing on the influence of others. Chapter 2 shows how Klein’s ideas relate to the influence of Freud before exploring how her work can be applied to Bergman’s films through the example of Wild Strawberries. Chapter 3 concentrates on Sartre’s early work, The Imaginary and considers how this is significant in relation to some of Sartre’s better-known philosophical ideas developed during and after the Second World War. These ideas will lead to an exploration of The Seventh Seal.
Chapters 4, 5, and 6 focus on three films from distinct parts of Bergman’s career: Summer with Monika, The Virgin Spring and Hour of the Wolf. In Chapter 4 this will be preceded by a brief over-view of three more films from the early part of Bergman’s career. These chapters explore how Kleinian and Sartrean ideas can be incorporated in close analysis, and alongside selected critical responses to the films. The analysis integrates key points from Klein and Sartre in a methodology specific to film studies. This will include analysis of cinematic elements such as camera work and lighting, and recognition of narrative structure and character developmen
