Get PDFThe article looks at the Czech community in Trieste in the period between 1848 and the First World War. Although a number of historians have already discussed the nationally heterogeneous structure of Trieste during the period of the Habsburg Monarchy the Czechs have always been relatively neglected. By examining archival documents, lite- rature, and newspapers from that period the author focused on the role of the Czech community in the town of Trieste.Avtor se v študiji ukvarja s češko skupnostjo v Trstu od leta 1848 do prve svetovne vojne. Čeprav seje zgodovino- pisje že ukvarjalo z raznoliko narodno sestavo Trsta v habsburškem času, je bila češka skupnost vedno potisnjena v ozadje. Z arhivskim gradivom, znanstveno literaturo in časopisi iz tistega obdobja, je tako prvič prikazana vloga, ki sojo Čehi imeli v tržaakem mestnem tkivu.

The influence of the former border between the Union and the Confederacy on the US presidential election results − cases of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia 1868−1912
No full textMagistrsko delo preučuje izide predsedniških volitev v Pensilvaniji, Marylandu in Virginiji med koncem ameriške državljanske vojne ter začetkom prve svetovne vojne. Skozi analizo volilnih rezultatov študija primerja in določa razlike med omenjenimi zveznimi državami glede na njihovo podporo kandidatom republikanske ali demokratske stranke. Te rezultate nato povezuje s posameznimi volilnimi programi predsedniških kandidatov, ki razkrijejo, ali so zvezne države v skladu z nekdanjo mejo med Unijo in Konfederacijo kontinuirano podpirale določeno politično usmeritev. Prek analize teh procesov skuša magistrsko delo prikazati, ali je imela nekdanja meja med Unijo in Konfederacijo kakršni koli vpliv na predsedniške volitve v Pensilvaniji, Marylandu in Virginiji.This master thesis examines the presidential election outcomes in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia between the end of the American Civil War and the beginning of the First World War. By analysing the election results, the study compares and identifies the differences between these states in terms of their support for the Republican or Democratic Party candidates. It then relates these results to the individual electoral programmes of the presidential candidates, revealing whether the states have continuously supported a particular political orientation, in line with the former Union-Confederate border. By analysing these processes, the thesis seeks to show whether the former Union-Confederate border had any impact on the presidential elections in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia

No full textThe complex intertwining of history, memory, space, place and identity in borderlands is the topic of this edited collection. Using a transnational analysis of multi-layered cases from the northern Adriatic and Central Europe, the essays address fundamental questions in the history of the twentieth century. The geographical areas under scrutiny have experienced regular re-drawings of political borders, reconfigurations of state orders, and changes in ideological frameworks. The symbolic boundaries that formed the mental map of the modern world were located here: West vs East, Latin vs German vs Slavic, European vs Oriental, antifascism vs fascism, capitalism vs communism, etc. These symbolic dimensions influence the local reality, intersecting with international developments and global processes. How these changes in ideology, state and the resulting spatial politics have functioned within varying historical frameworks, and what we can learn from their changing meanings, is the main focus of this volume. Its content represents a privileged perspective on understanding ruptures as well as continuities in memory cultures, commemorative practices, situational identifications and the varying politics of the past in European borderlands.-- List of figures
