Artist Bio: jin soo kim was born in 1950 in Seoul, during the Korean War. In 1974, after receiving her B.S. from Seoul National University, kim left Korea. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, the severity of the culture shock was such that after eight months, she moved to a remote rural town Macomb Illinois, forty miles east of the Mississippi River. She began studying art in Western Illinois University while working at a hospital as a registered nurse. In 1983, kim went on to receive an MFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since then, her work has been the subject of numerous one-person shows and she has participated in various exhibitions. kim has been teaching at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago since 1990. Living in Evanston, Illinois, she has been making art

Particulate matter (PM) is an essential indicator to evaluate air pollution, threatening human health. Although PM control could be achieved by using a variety of polymeric materials, identifying effective and green materials remains elusive in dust control technology. Here, we have employed environmentally friendly cellulose modified by methyl side groups, such as methylcellulose (MC)-based polymers, and evaluated their PM reduction efficiency when utilized in active and passive dust control methods, such as dust suppressants and air filters, respectively. When 25 m/s wind was applied on soil treated by MC-based polymers, PM emissions were reduced 95% or 85% lower than the soil treated by only water or the other cellulose without methyl side groups. The MC-based polymer was also effectively suppressed mineral dust from a local copper mine in Arizona with approximately 50 times lower amounts than a synthetic polymer containing methyl side groups. Furthermore, when MC-based polymers have deposited on filters of commercial face masks, the average filtration efficiency improved to greater than 99% while maintaining airflow resistance. Our results present that environmentally friendly MC-based polymers can act as dust binders that effectively agglomerate air pollutants, preventing the PM emission from dust sources and the inhalation after being suspended in the air; thus, labeling them as essential materials for advanced active and passive dust control technology.11Nsciescopu

Background DLG2, also known as postsynaptic density protein-93 (PSD-93) or chapsyn-110, is an excitatory postsynaptic scaffolding protein that interacts with synaptic surface receptors and signaling molecules. A recent study has demonstrated that mutations in the DLG2 promoter region are significantly associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although DLG2 is well known as a schizophrenia-susceptibility gene, the mechanisms that link DLG2 gene disruption with ASD-like behaviors remain unclear. Methods Mice lacking exon 14 of the Dlg2 gene (Dlg2(-/-) mice) were used to investigate whether Dlg2 deletion leads to ASD-like behavioral abnormalities. To this end, we performed a battery of behavioral tests assessing locomotion, anxiety, sociability, and repetitive behaviors. In situ hybridization was performed to determine expression levels of Dlg2 mRNA in different mouse brain regions during embryonic and postnatal brain development. We also measured excitatory and inhibitory synaptic currents to determine the impacts of Dlg2 deletion on synaptic transmission in the dorsolateral striatum. Results Dlg2(-/-) mice showed hypoactivity in a novel environment. They also exhibited decreased social approach, but normal social novelty recognition, compared with wild-type animals. In addition, Dlg2(-/-) mice displayed strong self-grooming, both in home cages and novel environments. Dlg2 mRNA levels in the striatum were heightened until postnatal day 7 in mice, implying potential roles of DLG2 in the development of striatal connectivity. In addition, the frequency of excitatory, but not inhibitory, spontaneous postsynaptic currents in the Dlg2(-/-) dorsolateral striatum was significantly reduced. Conclusion These results suggest that homozygous Dlg2 deletion in mice leads to ASD-like behavioral phenotypes, including social deficits and increased repetitive behaviors, as well as reductions in excitatory synaptic input onto dorsolateral spiny projection neurons, implying that the dorsal striatum is one of the brain regions vulnerable to the developmental dysregulation of DLG2. "Knowing that most interracial and international adoptions send children of color into Western Caucasian families, the artist and activist kimura byol-nathalie lemoine wanted to present another vision of what interracial adoption could be. To realize this, the artist Kim Waldron and kimura-lemoine decided to stage photographs of everyday life and key moments of the journey of a fictitious adoption. These photographs tell the story of a Caucasian woman adopted into a Canadian family of Korean descent. By this reversal, these images, at first sight banal, become interesting and intriguing here. The Kim Kim project elaborates Kim Waldron’s previous photographic and video work that incorporates self-portraiture into fictitious situations in order to challenge aspects of identity and social conditioning. Her photographic work uses a documentary aesthetic to make fictional propositions credible. This collaboration with kimura-lemoine uses the aesthetics of family photographs, a Korean family whose surname is Kim and Kim Waldron’s birth parents to create an imaginary and improbable tale of international adoption." -- Artexte website

Meta-Heuristic Fronthaul Bit Allocation for Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

    No full text
Limited capacity of fronthaul links in a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system can cause quantization errors at a central processing unit (CPU) during data transmission, complicating the centralized rate optimization problem. Addressing this challenge, we propose a harmony search (HS)-based algorithm that renders the combinatorial non-convex problem tractable. One of the distinctive features of our algorithm is its hierarchical structure: it first allocates resources at the access point (AP) level and subsequently optimizes for user equipment (UE), ensuring a more efficient and structured approach to resource allocation. Our proposed algorithm deals with rigorous conditions, such as asymmetric fronthaul bit allocation and distinct quantization error levels at each AP, which were not considered in previous works. We derive a closed-form expression of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), in which additive quantization noise model (AQNM) based distortion error is taken into account, to define the mathematical expression of spectral efficiency (SE) for each UE. Also, we provide analyses on computational complexity and convergence to investigate the practicality of proposed algorithm. By leveraging various performance metrics such as total SE and max-min fairness, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can adaptively optimize the fronthaul bit allocation depending on system requirements. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve satisfactory performance while maintaining low computational complexity, as compared to the exhaustive search method.
