    Radio direction finding, 10kc/s to 550 kc/s.

This paper reviews the problems involved in the location of a non-cooperative transmitter in the 10 kc/s to 550 kc/s range. The information is presented in simplified form for easier understanding by nontechnical personnel. Formulas and references are given for the engineer's use. The paper covers propagation characteristics, theoretical methods of radio location, and practical radio direction finder systems now in use or that may be used. An evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of most of the practical systems is given.Lieutenant, United States Navyhttp://archive.org/details/radiodirectionfi109451454

Delayed effects of sudden ionospheric disturbances on 164 Kc/s transmission between Tashkent and Ahmedabad

Continuous recording of the field strength of 164 Kc/s CW transmission from Tashkent (42° N, 69° E) has been going on at Ahmedabad (23° 01' N, 72° 36' E) since March 1960. The present communication deals with a delayed effect of S.I.D.'s which has been observed on the 164 Kc/s transmissions

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Parallel reversible permeability measurement techniques from 50 kc/s to 3 Gc/s

New measurement techniques are described for determining the complex reversible permeability of ferrimagnetic materials from 50 kc/s to 3 Gc/s with d-c fields applied parallel to the rf fields in toroidal specimens. In the 50 kc/s to 50 Mc/s range, emphasis is directed towards recent improvements in the rf permeameter. For measurements in the 50 Mc/s to 100 Mc/s range, the feasibility of using variable length re-entrant cavities with quarter wavelength chokes is demonstrated. Two half-wave variable length cavities are described for obtaining reversible permeability data in the 100 Mc/s to 3000 Mc/s range. A technique for avoiding the use of quarter wavelines for isolating the d-c and rf circuits in these halfwave cavities is emphasized and represents a definite improvement over corresponding slotted line methods. A brief description of the d-c circuitry developed for these measurements as well as some typical spectrum data is also given

Studies of current-noise from small resistors in the frequency range from 20 kc/s. to 500 kc/s.

Equipment is described for measuring current-noise from resistors of large resistance values, with shot noise calibration, and for recording this noise simultaneously at two frequencies. Current-noise has been measured from different commercial type resistors, for resistance values from 0.33 to 1,000 Kilo-ohms, for various applied dc voltages in the frequency range from 20 to 500 kc/s. Current-noise (in r.m.s. volts/volt/unit bandwidth) is found to be independent of the applied voltage. For one type of resistor it is independent of resistance, while for another the variation is with the half-power of the resistance. Variation with frequency is found to be at a constant inverse power of the frequency from 0.48 to 0.56 over the entire measured frequency range. All simultaneous double frequency recordings show the abnormal current-noise fluctuations to be synchronous throughout the measured frequency range, suggesting large-scale changes in the resistance material as the cause for these fluctuations
