It has to be done. We had teams of people who would do this work. But what I finally did, I applied to work at the hospital which is … Camp One. There were three camps, see, and the truck would take us. So, I went to apply for a position as a nursing assistant, and I … [received] training. So, I stayed in the Camp One, the hospital. We worked twelve hours a day. We got nine dollars a month. And…I was going to be a nurse, anyway, so I was glad for the experience to be there. On the other hand, on the weekends or whatever days, we could go back…to our home. The trucks worked like a shuttle, so we would have transportation back and forth. … 00:47:16.47 Well, ... taking such things as temperature [and] if there were certain treatments we had to provide—looking for certain signs and symptoms of unusual bleeding, or vomiting, or whatever. In those days, we had one whole ward—forty … [patients]—with tuberculosis. … [W]e had no antibiotics, and the treatment was to rest and to eat good food, and it’s all there was … [Tuberculosis was very] contagious…We … [wore] isolation gowns and masks. … But it’s amazing how many of … [the patients] survived. … There was no treatment in those days. Energy and emissions : local and global effects of the rise of China and India

Part 1 of the paper reviews recent trends in fossil fuel use and associated externalities. It also argues that the recent run-up in international oil prices reflects growing concerns about supply constraints associated with declining spare capacity in OPEC, refining bottlenecks, and geopolitical uncertainties rather than growing incremental use of oil by China and India. Part 2 compares two business as usual scenarios with a set of alternate scenarios based on policy interventions on the demand for or supply of energy and different assumptions about rigidities in domestic and international energy markets. The results suggest that energy externalities are likely to worsen significantly if there is no shift in China's and India's energy strategies. High energy demand from China and India could constrain some developing countries'growth through higher prices on international energy markets, but for others the"growth retarding"effects of higher energy prices are partially or fully offset by the"growth stimulating"effects of the larger markets in China and India. Given that there are many inefficiencies in the energy system in both China and India, there is an opportunity to reduce energy growth without adversely affecting GDPgrowth. The cost of a decarbonizing energy strategy will be higher for China and India than a fossil fuel-based strategy, but the net present value of delaying the shift will be higher than acting now. The less fossil fuel dependent alternative strategies provide additional dividends in terms of energy security.Energy Production and Transportation,Environment and Energy Efficiency,Energy and Environment,Energy Demand,Transport Economics Policy&Planning

Dearomative functionalization of simple arenes: Reduction and palladium-catalyzed syn-1,4-aminofunctionalizations

Aromatic compounds represent one of the most abundant classes of organic molecules, and are suitable precursors for synthesizing functionalized alicyclic hydrocarbon frameworks. Accordingly, many unique and enabling dearomative transformations have been developed and applied to the total synthesis of complex bioactive compounds. However, a significant challenge remains to be addressed in this field. That is, simple and non-activated arenes, such as benzene and naphthalene, have seldom been employed in the dearomative functionalization reactions due to their extreme inertness. Considering a wide availability of such simple arenes, the development of novel dearomative methods for non-activated arenes which would allow site-selective introduction of functionality with concomitant loss of aromaticity would provide ideal platforms for accessing alicyclic structures with functional and stereochemical diversity. To this end, this thesis is based on the development of a dearomative strategy that employs an arenophile, such as N-methyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione (MTAD), which undergo a visible- light-mediated formal [4+2] para-cycloaddition with simple arenes. The resulting dearomatized arene-arenophile cycloadduct possesses multiple functional handles, which can be further elaborated in situ to a variety of functional groups. Based on this concept, Chapter 2 discusses the application of olefin chemistry to achieve a site-selective reduction of the parent arenes. On the other hand, Chapters 3–6 describe an alternative mode of activating the arene-arenophile cycloadduct through transition metal-catalysis. An arenophile-mediated dearomative syn-1,4- aminofunctionalization protocol was established using palladium complexes as catalysts and with carbon-, nitrogen-, and oxygen-based nucleophiles. The key features of these processes compared to existing dearomatization reactions are: 1) amenable aromatic substrates encompassing a wide range of non-activated arenes as well as heteroarenes, 2) selective installation of functional groups to the dearomatized arene occurs in a single pot, 3) broad functional group compatibility, and 4) functionalization of least aromatic, non-activated aromatic ring within the polynuclear arenes. In each chapter, derivatizations of the resulting dearomatized products were explored through a variety of functional group elaboration. Based on the arenophile cycloreversion/fragmentation and olefin functionalization, highly functionalized alicyclic motifs with defined stereogenic centers were synthesized, most of which are not synthetically accessible using other existing dearomatization reactions. Furthermore, the versatility of the arenophile-mediated dearomatization strategy was also demonstrated by enabling novel disconnections towards the synthesis of natural products and bioactive compounds. This is highlighted by the facile synthesis of Sertraline, one of the best-selling antidepressant.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2021-05-01The student, Mikiko Okumura, accepted the attached license on 2019-03-28 at 11:19.The student, Mikiko Okumura, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2019-03-28 at 11:24.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2019-03-29 at 17:33.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #13464 on 2019-08-22 at 15:05:13Made available in DSpace on 2019-08-23T20:35:44Z (GMT). The research of the conjunction, seems to become "Important sign to develop sentences" by Tokieda (1950), lots of researches regard conjunction as a pattern classification by Nagano (1986) and Ichikawa (1978) and the researches, done by Morita (1980) and Tanaka (1987) etc. Moreover, the researches such as Sakuma (2000) and Nomura (2000) are also found from the sentence theory and the conversation theory point of view. It is needless to say that the conjunction plays the role that develop the function of the context in the text. However, it is still necessary to research and focus on the individual conjunction. Therefore, this research especially focus on the conjunction "SURUTO" , collecting examples of "SURUTO" from the conversation used by novels and new books, etc. In order to do reseach of the modern language, most of them are from"100 Shincho pocket edition data base" and “Aozora pocket edition”, 618 sentences in total were all collected from the Mordern Literature. In Chapter 2, the frequency of "SURUTO" in text will be clarified and by work, author, word, and chronicle ect., in order to analyze how it works and the frequency. As a result, it was clarified that the frequency of conjunction "SURUTO" relates to work, author, word, and chronicle ect. In Chapter 3, the examples from which data was analyzed in Chapter 2 was classified into fixed terms and the assumption condition based on the early research. The early research already examined the relation between the matter and each event of "SURUTO" is ambiguous, In Chapter 3, it will reexamine the subordinate position classification in the usage at fixed terms. In Chapter 4, the example of "SURUTO" will be divided into four patterns, and try to analyze those different way. The freguency of "SURUTO" in text according to the realities and the condition is clarified through this research. However, the freguency of "SURUTO" , such as Kenji Miyazawa and Ryunosuke Akutagawa, and other writers, differs by author, work, and the description, is also an important subject in the future.

This study is fundamentally a descriptive case study. Based on the view that everyday talk is a major tool of children’s socialization (Shieffelin & Ochs, 1986;Watson-Gegeo,1988), the author aims to examine the process of language socialization of Japanese children attending a private nursery school in western Japan during a one-year period. All of the classroom procedures are viewed as various forms of social and cognitive learning processes guided by a teacher aiming to shape the children to be appropriate members of the community. In this study one conflictive episode was selected to illustrate how children skillfully repeated each other’s utterances in order to gain control over an ongoing activity, whereas children who were marginalized by a dominant group made excellent use of access strategies and joined the activity in the end. The value of kodomo rashisa (childlike children) in early childhood education will also be discussed.departmental bulletin pape
