Ruin in the films of Jia Zhangke
No full textThis article explores the reflection, representation and psychogeographic affect of the ruins in the films by the Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke (b. 1970). During the Maoist period, ruins were signs of developmental progression; as Mao Zedong proclaimed, ‘there is no construction without destruction ... Put destruction first, and in the process you have construction.’ The author argues that the ruins are not just the effects of China’s fast-paced modernization, but are also symbols of the destruction of Maoist society. Furthermore, by recording the state and act of destruction, these films enhance the phenomenological and affective aspects of the ruin. Finally, when construction is realized in the films (the construction from destruction), it is either threatening or ‘futuristic’; thus, both the ruin and construction estrange the previous residents from their environment by rejecting them from the places that they once lived and chronologically estrange them from the projected utopian future
Entrainment studies in cloud-like flows using novel scanning tomography technique
No full textClouds are one of the major sources of uncertainty in climate prediction.The present work is to study the dynamics of orographic clouds. We considered a planar turbulent wall jet with off source volumetric heating as an appropriate low order fluid-dynamical model for studying the turbulence and entrainment in orographic-clouds. Entrainment was found to reduce drastically with the off-source volumetric heat addition. We found that the reduction of entrainment started at a bulk-Richardson number which was an order of magnitude smaller than that seen in earlier experiments [1] on free standing cumulus clouds. This is consistent with observations in real orographic clouds which develop as a thin sheet rising along the mountain slope. We have developed a novel scanning tomography technique for getting concentration field in turbulent shear flows. This technique is being applied on cloud-like flow to understand the entrainment characteristics. Detailed results will be presented at the conference

Conflict and survival: Sinhala female-headship in eastern Sri Lanka
No full textUsing data and case study evidence gathered from fieldwork in eastern Sri Lanka during 1998-99, this paper fleshes out the particular situation of Sinhala female-heads. What conflict and non-conflict factors lead to female-headship? The evidence supports the contention that the patriarchal households may be adjusting to factors beyond the ethnic conflict. It is important to highlight the complex and dynamic relationships to understand the economic opportunities exploited by female-heads to maintain their economic security. However, there is also a social cost to this. Female-heads' participation in the labour market is linked to the support they receive from kin and community structures. However, there is also a social cost to this, as they perceive suchreliance requires certain gendered standards of behaviour

Important trail she left in the life of the Russian intelligentsia. Its dispensation has transformed their attitude towards life and aspirations. This article describes the part of the life of the Russian religious philosopher K.N. Leontiev in the context of the impact space of the Orthodox culture of Athos. The author considers the question of spiritual transformation of the personality of the philosopher, examines the origins of several of his works, religious and philosophical views. The author pays special attention to the formation of the individual of K.N.Leontiev in early childhood and traces the impact of this in the future writer's biography. The author dwells in detail on the characteristics of the personality of the philosopher, as he believes that it is inseparable from his books.</jats:p
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Shifting theories: partial perspectives on the household
No full textThere is a neglect of networks within cooperative conflict models, which arises because of the patriarchal households assumed. But households are not the same everywhere, because their structure is dependent upon social context, and they are a sub-system of wider social relations and realities. Understanding households (in this paper female-headed households) requires us to study the varied contexts in which households are situated and the social relations of individuals within these institutions. Using contributions from feminist economics and realist social theory, this paper shows how these frameworks can explain the diversity of social reality in household formations and relation
