Anthony Storr and his vision of creative illness
Author of the article presents the phenomenon of "creative illness" through the prism of the views of the British psychiatrist Anthony Storr. The central issue of this article is the close relationship between genius and mental illness. The experience of "creative illness" (deep mental crisis, "dark night of the soul") was characteristic of many mystics, religious sect leaders and visionaries who created original philosophical and psychological concepts and made discoveries in the field of exact sciences. The author pays special attention to the crises of Freud and Jung, thanks to which visionaries created ideas that changed our perception of man and his culture. Anthony Storr treats them not so much as scientists, but as inspirational gurusUniwersytet w Białymstoku, Instytut Studiów Kulturowych, Zakład Antropologii KulturyBakan, Joel (2013), Dzieciństwo w oblężeniu. Project review: Museum partnerships, virtual reality and The Catherine Storr Experience
This review explores the role of partnership in creating The Catherine Storr Experience, which presents the life, work and collection of children’s author Catherine Storr through a virtual reality platform. Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children’s Books, which holds Catherine Storr’s archive, worked with Professor Kim Reynolds, who developed the content for The Catherine Storr Experience, and Digital Cultures in Culture Lab at Newcastle University, which provided the virtual reality expertise. Partnering with university researchers has enabled this museum collection to be interpreted and presented to a public audience using cutting-edge technology
Commitment, resistance and indifference toward diversity amongst community cricket volunteers
Individual commitment to diversity and its link to organizational commitment and change amongst community sport volunteers, is a key debate in the scholarship of sport (Cunningham 2008; Spaaij 2011; Spaaij et al. 2013; Spaaij, Magee, and Jeanes 2014; Melton and Cunningham 2014; Jeanes et al. 2018). Yet details about driving factors and processes which influence volunteer commitment to diversity are relatively unknown (Storr et al. 2020). This article critically examines the attitudinal commitment of volunteers engaging with participants who have intellectual disabilities. Extending the work of Herscovitch and Meyer (2002), the author analyses the attitudinal commitment of 21 volunteers in a community cricket club in Victoria, Australia. Approximately half of the sample showed a mind-set committed to diversity, with the remainder holding indifferent or resistant attitudes. The author concludes that by identifying resistant or indifferent attitudes, clubs can improve inclusion practices amongst volunteers. By changing organizational structures, the link between individual volunteer and whole of organization commitment to diversity can be strengthened, guaranteeing better participation outcomes for people with intellectual disabilities

A Considered Cut
'A considered Cut' is a PaR film by Judah Attille presented as part of Paul Mellon/Tate Britain Cutting Edge: Collage in Britain conference.
Research participants include Judah Attille; Somatic acting artist-researcher-educator, Christina Kapadocha (@christinakapadocha); Artist, educator, author, researcher, Ilga Leimanis (@ilgaleimanis); Independent curator and writer, Taylor Le Melle (@melrose_tay) with Filmmaker Ibrahim Kargbo (@ikrgb0); Artist-filmmaker, Rhea Storr (@rheastorr). Together, they instigated a critical enquiry into understanding how a somatic intervention prepares an ‘actor’ at the point of mark-making, the outcomes of transferring drawing skills from non-time-based media to the time-based medium of film and the potential of collage as an aid for planning
Gambling behavior subtypes among respondents with gambling-related problems in a population-based sample
Latent class analysis was used to delineate distinctive subgroups of gamblers and examine whether they differed by demographics and gambling severity. Data from three Canadian provinces focused on respondents who reported at least some risk of problem gambling in the past year (N= 1,071). Three latent classes were distinguished: a low on most items group (class 1), a behaviorally conditioned-substance abusing impulsive-emotionally vulnerable (or all types) group (class 2), and a familial-genetic-behaviorally conditioned group (class 3). Gamblers in classes 2 and 3 were most likely to be moderate-risk and problem gamblers. Community-based prevention efforts may need to address each subgroup differently but also according to their characteristics. Synthesis of furanosesquiterpenoid natural products
The effect of addition of a catalytic quantity of a crown ether in the reaction of a phosphonate anion with a carbonyl compound (Wadsworth-Emmons reaction) has been studied and found to greatly facilitate this reaction. This modification of the Wadsworth-Emmons reaction, using a catalytic amount of 15-crown-5, has been employed in the synthesis of the naturally occurring furanosesquiterpene Pallescensin-E. The structure of this compound has been confirmed by comparison of its spectral data with that of the synthesised isomer, 4,l0-dihydro-7,8-dimethyl 10H-benzof4,5Jcycloheptafl,2-bJ furan.Homosesquirosefuran, an analogue of the naturally occurring furanosesquiterpene Sesquirosefuran, has been synthesised via the dianion of methylacetoacetate. An approach to the synthesis of Pinguisone (a component of the essential oil of the liverwort Aneura pinguis)has been attempted employing two Diels-Alder reactions to generate the four cis-methyl groups found in the natural product. In a study of the reaction of n-(2-methylallyl)nickel bromide complex with a range of epoxides, this complex was found not only to react with reactive epoxides (e.g. styrene epoxide) but also with less reactive propylene epoxide.Substrates for possible intramolecular n-allylnickel cyclisation to generate an a-methylene-6-valerolactone ring system have been prepared
Quarantine is important in restricting the spread of exotic seed-borne tree pathogens in the southern hemisphere
The lack or destruction of indigenous forests in the southern hemisphere has in some cases led to extensive afforestation with exotic softwoods that subsequently developed into large successful forestry industries. Pinus radiana is the predominant softwood species in the southern hemisphere, with over 3 million ha planted. In its natural environment on the West coast of the United States, P. radiata has been decimated by an epidemic outbreak of pitch canker caused by Fusarium circinatum. The potential devastation of softwood industries in the southern hemisphere, as a consequence of introducing this pathogen, has resulted in strict quarantine regulations. However, this may be too little, too late. F. circinatum is already present in South Africa and it appears that only the lack of an insect vector that has prevented its movement from seedlings to mature trees in plantations. This review considers the risk of introducing new pathogens into the southern hemisphere softwood plantations. The pine pathogen Sphaeropsis sapinea is used as a model to assess future risks, particularly of introducing seed-borne pathogens. The genotypic diversity observed in the pine endophyte S. sapinea, is consistent with historical records of the frequency and quantity of seed and germplasm importation to and within the southern hemisphere. The diversity in South Africa is high, moderate in New Zealand and low in Australia. Many of the genotypes observed were probably introduced before the advent of quarantine. However, new introduced genotypes may be more pathogenic than existing genotypes, potentially leading to more severe disease outbreaks. In pathogens capable of sexual reproduction such as F. circinatum, newly introduced genotypes crossing with existing genotypes would allow for more gene diversity and a greater risk of the pathogen overcoming the trees' resistance. Thus, quarantine is now more important than ever, as limiting the genetic diversity of an exisiting introduced pathogen can be as important as excluding new pathogens
Shubnikov–de Haas Effect in the Metallic State of Na0.3CoO2
Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations for two well-defined frequencies, corresponding, respectively, to areas of 0.8 and 1.36% of the first Brillouin zone, were observed in single crystals of Na0.3CoO2. The existence of Na superstructures in Na0.3CoO2, coupled with this observation, suggests the possibility that the periods are due to the reconstruction of the large Fermi surface around the ? point. An alternative interpretation in terms of the long sought-after ?g? pockets is also considered but found to be incompatible with existing specific heat data.Kavli Institute of NanoscienceApplied Science
