    Georg Hermann.

    No full text
The internationally renowned author of numerous novels, essays, and articles, Georg Hermann, was born as Georg Borchardt in Berlin-Friedenau on October 7, 1871, the youngest of six children in a well-established Jewish family. Later in life he used his father’s first name Hermann as his surname when writing. Contrary to the expectations for a young man from a reputable family, Hermann did not pursue the Abitur exam in a Gymnasium (secondary school), but instead received a one-year certificate in 1890, leaving school to become an apprentice salesman at a tie company. From 1896 until 1899 he worked in the Statistical Office of Berlin, at the same time attending literature and art history lectures at the University of Berlin. Afterwards he worked as a freelance writer and art critic. His first book, 'Spielkinder', was published in 1896, but he did not become well-known until 1906, with the publication of 'Jettchen Gebert', followed by its sequel, 'Henriette Jacoby'. These novels told the story of the life of a young woman living in Jewish Berlin during the Biedermeier period of the 1820s and 1830s. Politically active, Georg Hermann was also a member of the Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens.Having become known for his pacifist tendencies through his writing, and because of his Jewish heritage, Georg Hermann and his family fled to Holland shortly after the burning of the Reichstag in 1933. Although the rest of his family was saved from the Nazis after their occupation of Holland in 1943, Georg Hermann was sent to the Dutch concentration camp of Westerbork. On November 16, 1943 he was transported to Auschwitz and either died during transport or shortly after his arrival.Digital ImageRecord added to DigiTool. Aleph record suppressed. This research compares the Brazilian translation Debaixo das Rodas (1971) with its original Unterm Rad (1906) by Hermann Hesse, taking into consideration the additions made by the translator Álvaro Cabral to the dialogues and narrative passages. Based on the textual prototypology proposed by Snell-Hornby (1995), in which the analysis of translation is interdisciplinary, the reception of Hesse's literary project regarding his school romance in Germany, as well as in other countries where it was most read (PFEIFER, 1977; VAHLBUSCH, 2009), helps setting the context of the Brazilian translation. At the interface between Comparative Literature and Translation Studies, the history of the canons# literary work from its source culture and its passage through other target cultures illustrates the discussion on the understanding of the source text by the translator (REISS, 2000). Likewise, translation strategies can be explained by the analysis of the functional and extralinguistic aspects of the source and target texts in the development of Translation Studies in the last 40 years

Dose reduction in full-field digital mammography: an anthropomorphic breast phantom study

    No full text
The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential for radiation dose reduction by using other beam qualities in full-field digital mammography (FFDM) compared with screen-film mammography (SFM). FFDM was performed using an amorphous silicon detector with a caesium iodide scintillator layer (Senographe 2000D, GE, Milwaukee, USA). SFM was performed using a state-of-the-art conventional system (Senographe DMR, GE, Milwaukee, USA) with a dedicated screen-film combination. An anthropomorphic breast phantom with superimposed microcalcifications (50-200 mum) was used to evaluate the detectability of microcalcifications. Contact mammograms and magnification views (m=1.8) performed with both the digital and the screen-film system were compared. Images were exposed automatically. Molybdenum/Molybdenum (Mo/Mo) anode-filter combination, 28 kVp and 63 mAs were selected by the automatic optimization of parameters (AOP) of the conventional system. This exposure protocol (protocol A) was also used as baseline for the digital system. Dose reduction in digital mammography was achieved by using protocol B with Mo/Rh and 31 kVp and protocol C with Rh/Rh and 32 kVp. The detectability of microcalcifications was assessed by 3 experienced readers with a confidence level ranging from 1 to 5. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed. In protocol A the area under the ROC-curve (A(z)) for contact views performed by the screen-film system was 0.64 and for those performed with the FFDM system 0.68. The A(z) values were 0.74 in protocol B and 0.65 in protocol C for the digital system. For the conventional and digital magnification views A(z) values were 0.71 and 0.79, respectively. For protocol B the A(z) value was 0.81 and for protocol C it was 0.76. There is no statistically significant difference in the A(z) values for the different protocols in digital mammography and no significant difference from the screen-film system. A potential for dose reduction by using other beam qualities seems to be possible with this digital system

Radiation exposure in full-field digital mammography with a flat-panel x-ray detector based on amorphous silicon in comparison with conventional screen-film mammography.

    No full text
Purpose: Comparison of radiation exposure between a digital amorphous silicon and a screen-film based mammography system. Evaluation of a possible potential of full-field digital mammography in order to decrease the radiation dose. Methods: The average glandular dose for phantom thicknesses from 30 to 60 mm was calculated from experimentally determined entrance surface air kerma for a digital and a conventional mammography system. The effect of reducing the detector dose and of changing the radiation quality on radiation exposure and on image quality were investigated. Results: By using the delivered settings of the automatic exposure control (AEC) devices, both mammographic systems needed nearly the same doses. Regulations and guidelines on radiation doses were complied. With the digital system, a reduction of radiation exposure of up to 40% by using a higher radiation quality and decreasing slightly the detector dose without loss of diagnostic image quality, might be possible. Conclusion: The potential of fullfield digital mammography for radiation dose reduction, as shown in the present phantom study, needs however, a careful examination under clinical conditions

Physical aspects of digital mammography technology

    No full text
The establishment of digital mammography systems constitutes a slow process, the reason for this being the general need of particular image quality in mammography. This article provides an overview of the physical basis of digital mammography with high image quality and dose as low as reasonably achievable. The trade-off of high contrast resolution and effective quantum efficiency of the imaging system on the one hand, and the demand of high spatial resolution or very small pixel size on the other hand is discussed. The actual status of the available digital detector technology for mammography is described. The digital systems presently available are superior to conventional screen-film mammographic systems with respect to contrast resolution. An outlook on possible further developments in the field of digital mammography is presented
