Wang Shuo and the commercialisation of contemporary Chinese culture

    No full text
This thesis examines the commercialisation of Chinese culture that has taken place over the past twenty years in mainland China. It explores the contribution of Wang Shuo, a cultural figure who straddles different fields of culture, moving from literature to the ultimate mass culture medium of television, this study plots Wang Shuo' s development from educational failure, to business failure, to fiction writer, film & TV editor, film director and cultural critic and analyst. His stories, films, TV series and articles have caused shock-waves throughout national cultural circles as he has transformed the terms of the debate from academic discourse to a validation of the role of the market in the culture field. Although Wang Shuo has not been labelled as a dissident, his approach to the culture market has had a more subversive effect on official ideology that those overt dissidents who have had to live in exile or have been imprisoned. He has utilised the language of official ideology to satirise the authorities, turning the ideology and its supporters into figures of fun. Yet his own goals have been strictly personal and economic ones. The authorities recognize the value of Wang Shuo's work in the cultural market but at the same time distrust his works and place him under strict censorship. Examining the way Wang Shuo and people surround him have succeeded in different fields of cultural achievement is a mirror to understanding the process of the transformation of contemporary Chinese culture from a socialist state-controlled culture to a market-oriented mass culture industry

Wang Meng and contemporary Chinese literature: the vicissitudes of a committed writer

    No full text
This thesis examines the way Wang Meng has developed as a writer from the 1950s to the 1990s in the context of New China's political and literary background. It looks at the compromises he was forced to make between his political beliefs in the Communist Party and his chosen role as a professional writer. After his disastrous early foray into what was deemed to be unacceptable political criticism with The Young Newcomer in the Organisation Department in the 1950s, when the opportunity came to start publishing again in the late 1970s he was boldly innovative in style, helping to transform New Period literature, but conservative in content, sticking to politically acceptable topics. It was only with Hard Porridge in 1989 that he ventured again, and very successfully, into political comment. There is no outstanding leading writer in contemporary China, but Wang Meng is a leading contender for the title

    Abstract Using e + e − annihilation data sets corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb −1, collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.699 GeV, we report the first measurements of the absolute branching fractions B Λ c + → p K L 0 B(Λc+pKL0) \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_L^0\right) = (1.67 ± 0.06 ± 0.04)%, B Λ c + → p K L 0 π + π − B(Λc+pKL0π+π) \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_L^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right) = (1.69 ± 0.10 ± 0.05)%, and B Λ c + → p K L 0 π 0 B(Λc+pKL0π0) \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_L^0{\pi}^0\right) = (2.02 ± 0.13 ± 0.05)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Combining with the known branching fractions of Λ c + → p K S 0 Λc+pKS0 {\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_S^0 , Λ c + → p K S 0 π + π − Λc+pKS0π+π {\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_S^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-} , and Λ c + → p K S 0 π 0 Λc+pKS0π0 {\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_S^0{\pi}^0 , we present the first measurements of the K S 0 KS0 {K}_S^0 - K L 0 KL0 {K}_L^0 asymmetries R Λ c + K S , L 0 X = B Λ c + → K S 0 X − B Λ c + → K L 0 X B Λ c + → K S 0 X + B Λ c + → K L 0 X R(Λc+,KS,L0X)=B(Λc+KS0X)B(Λc+KL0X)B(Λc+KS0X)+B(Λc+KL0X) R\left({\Lambda}_c^{+},{K}_{S,L}^0X\right)=\frac{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {K}_S^0X\right)-\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {K}_L^0X\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {K}_S^0X\right)+\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {K}_L^0X\right)} in charmed baryon decays: R Λ c + p K S , L 0 = − 0.025 ± 0.031 R(Λc+,pKS,L0)=0.025±0.031 R\left({\Lambda}_c^{+},p{K}_{S,L}^0\right)=-0.025\pm 0.031 , R Λ c + p K S , L 0 π + π − = − 0.027 ± 0.048 R(Λc+,pKS,L0π+π)=0.027±0.048 R\left({\Lambda}_c^{+},p{K}_{S,L}^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right)=-0.027\pm 0.048 and R Λ c + p K S , L 0 π 0 = − 0.015 ± 0.046 R(Λc+,pKS,L0π0)=0.015±0.046 R\left({\Lambda}_c^{+},p{K}_{S,L}^0{\pi}^0\right)=-0.015\pm 0.046 . A Study of the Classical Landscape at the Wang River Villa of Wang Wei

    No full text
The landscape of Wang Wei's Wang River Villa is examined by reviewing the essays and papers written about the poetical collaboration, the “Wang River Collection.” The purpose of this paper is to clarify the meaning of villa architecture in China. The author expects that this research will contribute to a mutual understanding between cultures. The villa was a Utopia for Wang. On the other hand, he was a pious Buddhist and Buddhistic concepts are reflected in the landscape. I consider the features of the classical landscape of Xie Lingyun and "Chu Ci," as written in “The Collection,” a reflection of the Buddhistic concept. When considering what the classics meant to Wang Wei, it is apparent that his villa is a representation of the classical landscape. It is not an imitation of the classical landscape, but a unique and original creation of art by Wang.departmental bulletin pape

Coupling of caged molecule dynamics to Johari-Goldstein β-relaxation in metallic glasses

    No full text
Three recently published papers have discovered a general property of the fast caged dynamics observed in the glassy states of polyalcohols (S. Capaccioli et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 119, 8800 (2015)), amorphous polymers (K. L. Ngai et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 119, 12502 (2015)), and van der Waals molecular glass-formers (K. L. Ngai et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 119, 12519 (2015)). The fast caged dynamics are manifested as nearly constant loss (NCL) in dielectric and mechanical susceptibility. Shown before in these papers is the intensity of the caged dynamics change temperature dependence at a temperature THF nearly coincident with the secondary glass transition temperature Tgβ, at which the Johari-Goldstein (JG) β-relaxation time τJG reaches ∼103s. Evidently this finding indicates the coupling of the caged dynamics to the secondary glass transition. The glass-formers considered so far are all soft matters. However, the generality of the phenomenon and its explanation implies that the relation, THF - Tgβ, should be observed in other classes of glass-formers. In this paper, we extend the consideration of the phenomenon and explanation to metallic glasses, which are not soft matter. The experimental data presented show the same phenomenon, supporting its generality and fundamental importance in the physics of glass and glass transition
