Comparing National Stereotypes in different cultures: German in Dutch and Russian language teaching at schools and universities
Stereotypes, prejudices, hostile images and clichés are different forms of self-images and images of others. This paper establishes stereotypes as a scalable concept to distinguish them from other forms of fixed attributions. It features a comparison of national stereotypes about Germany, the Germans and the German language from a Dutch and Russian perspective and discusses the use of stereotypes in foreign language teaching, which are aimed at culturally reflective learning.Stereotypes, prejudices, hostile images and clichés are different forms of self-images and images of others. Extract from the diary of Charles Emil Wesche
Extract from the diary or report of Major Charles Emil Wesche relative to the history of the Second New Mexico Militia Division in the Civil War. This part covered actions around Valverde and the surrender of Federal troops at Socorro and was provided to Liuetenant Major McDermott and the Department of the United States Army in Washington, D.C. Transcripts written by author. Wesche served as Regimental Adjutant, Aide de Camp and Major of the First Regiment, Second Division, New Mexico Militia, infantry and cavalry. Diary begins in Santa Fe January 26, 1862 and run to February 24, 1862, with details on problems organizing the companies, men moved from one company to fill other companies, etc. He notes the arrival of new militia companies, with names of the officers and their duties, escorts, etc. He also notes the march of his group from Santa Fe to Fort Craig, with overnight camps at El Banque, Galisteo Creek, Algodones, Alameda, Los Barelas, crossed the Rio Grande to Los Padillas, next Belen, Sabinal, Lemitar, the camp between Luis Lopez and San Antonio, and finally near Fort Craig and Valverde, and conditions there. He describes his unit's military engagements with the Texans, Confederates, around Fort Craig before and during the battle, but they were not engaged in the major Valverde battle itself. After the battle, their cavalry men were assigned make headquarters in Socorro and await reinforcements from Camp Connelly, Los Lunas, that did not come. He described for the Army report, their encounter with the Texans around Socorro, conditions, lack of support to defend the town by the people of Socorro, negotiations between the Federals and the Texans, the determination of the Confederates to take the town, their surrounding of the town, artillery positions and superior numbers, large desertions from the Federal side, and the decision of the Federal officers to take the oath of neutrality and surrender to the Texans, prisoners of war for a year, captured. Colonel Nicolas Pino, Lieutenant Colonel Jesus Maria Baca y Salazar. His comments on lack of equipment, clothing, horses and supplies for the militia and Volunteers, soldiers not being paid, including him not receiving his own salary, pay or compensation for the expenses he paid for equipment for his men, desertions, small pox, conditions, depression, fear. Excerpts in English, handwritten, 7pp/fr, two page per frame
Acute motor and sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN) in a 15-year-old boy presenting with severe pain and distal muscle weakness
Acute motor and sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN) is a recenty described subtype of Guillain-Barre syndrome characterized by acute onset of distal weakness, loss of deep tendon reflexes and sensory symptoms. Electrophysiological studies show mildly reduced nerve conduction velocities combined with a marked reduction of muscle action and sensory nerve action potentials. Here, we report a 15-year-old boy who suffered from severe burning and knife-like pain that increased over a period of three months and resulted in a disrupted sleep pattern and suicidal intentions as well as marked loss of weight. In addition, he developed muscle weakness in his hands and feet. Neurophysiological and histopathological studies revealed AMSAN. Marked improvement of his condition was achieved by treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins, high-dose methylprednisolone, and a combination of gabapentin, antidepressants, and an oral morphine
DC Test Results of the DEMO TF React&Wind Conductor Prototype No. 2
In 2013, the EUROfusion organization launched the preconceptual design studies of the fusion DEMO tokamak. Several options of superconducting magnet design are investigated within the scope of the project. The magnets based on Nb3Sn, namely the Toroidal Field (TF) and Central Solenoid (CS) coils, can be made either using the Wind&React technology, as in ITER, or React&Wind (RW) technology with potentially significant cost-saving benefits. Within the R&D program of the Swiss Plasma Center, the first full-size DEMO TF RW conductor prototype, RW1, was manufactured and tested in 2015-2016. The second, improved prototype, RW2, was built and tested in 2017-2018. The experimental results collected over several test campaigns performed on four assemblies of RW2 rated for 63 kA at 12.23 T are presented. The current sharing temperature Tcs of the latest RW2 assembly in DEMO operating conditions reached 7.16 K after 1000 electromagnetic cycles and four thermal cycles. This Tcs corresponds to the effective strain εeff =-0.27%, significantly exceeding the design requirement of Tcs≥ 6.7 K. If RW2 have been used in ITER TF coils, the Tcs at 68 kA and 10.9 T would be 7.42 K, i.e., approximately 1 K higher than most of the ITER TF samples, and that with only 55% of Nb3Sn used in ITER TF conductor. The tests of RW2 proved that the cost-saving potential of the React&Wind technology is enormous
Long-term population trends in three grassland insect groups: a comparative analysis of 1951 and 2009
Development of farming practices has caused drastic changes in European agricultural landscapes during the past 50 years. As a consequence of these changes, insect diversity is widely expected to decline. We performed a comparative analysis with long-term data of three insect groups: Auchenorrhyncha, Heteroptera and Orthoptera. In 2009, we revisited nine grassland sites in northern Germany that were originally sampled in 1951 using the same techniques and during a similar time frame. We found that the insect community exhibited no consistent trends between years. Species richness of Auchenorrhyncha and Heteroptera increased on plot level as well as on landscape level but remained unchanged for Orthoptera. Abundance of Auchenorrhyncha and Orthoptera significantly decreased, while Heteroptera increased. There is a strong trend towards homogeneity in community composition for Heteroptera and a weak one for Auchenorrhyncha. The frequency and abundance of species preferring disturbed and/or eutrophic habitats increased, whereas the number of species preferring low-productive habitats declined. This trend is especially pronounced in Auchenorrhyncha. Generalistic species were more abundant in relative proportions as well as in absolute numbers. We hypothesize that these trends arise from alterations of Central European landscapes because of agricultural intensification over the last several decades
Carlos Ginzburg’s historiographic battle: reading against the grain the inquisitorial acts of the benandanti
From the analysis of Carlo Ginzburg’s first work, Los benandanti (1966), I try to show that the historiography of the author has positioned himself on the side of those persecuted by the Inquisition.
