Camillo Sitte - Gesamtausgabe. Schriften und Projekte
In the Project P16901-G06 sponsored by the FWF, Camillo Sittes writings will be published for the first time in a „critical comprehensive edition“, scheduled for six volumes. The basis for this edition is provided by the “Sitte Nachlass-Archiv” which is owned by the Technical University, Vienna. The writings of volume one consist of Sittes publications in the field of art criticism and the applied arts. Those writings have been, in most cases, shorter publications in newspapers and journals which are difficult to access today. The unpublished and undated autograph “Faust, Fliegender Holländer und Meistersinger” as well as one letter to Richard Wagner from 1873, which is not contained in the Sitte archive, supplement his writings in the field of art criticism.
The writings in the field of applied arts throw a new light onto the work of Camillo Sitte as director of vocational schools (i.e. Kunstgewerbeschulen), who elsewise is predominantly known as urban theorist and urban planner only. Those wrintigs give testimony to the political ambitions to foster the applied arts in the k. u. k. monarchy around Rudolf Eitelberger von Edelberg. They comprise almost all areas of arts and craft, ranging from traditional and local trades to the beginnings of industrial production.
The writings in the field of art criticism derive mainly from Sittes early time in Vienna and document the vivid debates on the question of art between historism and emerging modern currents like secession, impressionism and expressionism. Furthermore, this thematic field contains a series of writings on Richard Wagner’s conception of art which illustrate Sittes own apprehension of art, as it will have impact especially on his chief work, "City Planning According to Its Artistic Principles" from 1889 (vol. 3 of this edition).
Michael Mönninger and Wolfgang Sonne / Ruth Hanisch put these texts into context, inform about the current state of research and establish connections to others of Camillo Sitte’s fields of activity, which will be documented in the volumes of this edition to come. Furthermore, there is an extensive essay on the biography of Camillo Sitte by Michael Mönninger. Editorial work is done by Sonja Hnilica and Bernhard Langer. The Editors are Klaus Semsroth, Michael Mönninger and Christiane C. Collins.
A Low Cost Controller Board for Teaching Robotics
This paper presents the Smarty Board; a new micro-controller board designed specifically for the robotics teaching needs of Australian schools. The primary motivation for this work was the lack of commercially available and cheap controller boards that would have all their components including interfaces on a single board. Having a single board simplifies the construction of programmable robots that can be used as platforms for teaching and learning robotics. Reducing the cost of the board as much as possible was one of the main design objectives. The target user groups for this device are the secondary and tertiary students, and hobbyists. Previous studies have shown that equipment cost is one of the major obstacles for teaching robotics in Australia.\ud
The new controller board was demonstrated at high-school seminars. In these demonstrations the new controller board was used for controlling two robots that we built. These robots are available as kits. Given the strong demand from high-school teachers, new kits will be developed for the next robotic Olympiad to be held in Australia in 2006.\u

Effective description of domain wall strings
The analysis of domain wall dynamics is often simplified to one-dimensional physics. For domain walls in thin films, more realistic approaches require the description as two-dimensional objects. This includes the study of vortices and curvatures along the domain walls as well as the influence of boundary effects. Here we provide a theory in terms of soft modes that allows us to analytically study the physics of extended domain walls and their stability. By considering irregularly shaped skyrmions as closed domain walls, we analyze their plasticity and compare their dynamics with those of circular skyrmions. Our theory directly provides an analytical description of the excitation modes of magnetic skyrmions, previously accessible only through sophisticated micromagnetic numerical calculations and spectral analysis. These analytical expressions provide the scaling behavior of the different physics on parameters that experiments can test
Early Results in Vision-based Map Building
Two key objectives of robot vision are autonomous navigation and mapping. Digital\ud
cameras have become relatively cheap in recent years and have appeared in a\ud
variety of consumer devices, such as PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants). It therefore\ud
makes sense to try to build systems that use vision as their primary input instead\ud
of the more traditional sonar and infrared sensors that have been used in the\ud
past. The camera can also be used for a range of other tasks. Service robots and\ud
toys typically operate in an indoor environment but rarely have a map of their environment\ud
when they are first turned on. This paper therefore addresses the problem\ud
of vision-based mapping where a camera has deliberately been chosen as the\ud
only sensor
Spin-Wave Driven Bidirectional Domain Wall Motion in Kagome Antiferromagnets
We predict a mechanism to controllably manipulate domain walls in kagome antiferromagnets via a single linearly polarized spin-wave source. We show by means of atomistic spin dynamics simulations of antiferromagnets with kagome structure that the speed and direction of the domain wall motion can be regulated by only tuning the frequency of the applied spin wave. Starting from microscopics, we establish an effective action and derive the corresponding equations of motion for the spin-wave-driven domain wall. Our analytical calculations reveal that the coupling of two spin-wave modes inside the domain wall explains the frequency-dependent velocity of the spin texture. Such a highly tunable spin-wave-induced domain wall motion provides a key component toward next-generation fast, energy-efficient, and Joule-heating-free antiferromagnetic insulator devices

Current-induced H-shaped-skyrmion creation and their dynamics in the helical phase
Inevitable for the basic principles of skyrmion racetrack-like applications is not only their confined motion along one-dimensional channels but also their controlled creation and annihilation. Helical magnets have been suggested to naturally confine the motion of skyrmions along the tracks formed by the helices, which also allow for high-speed skyrmion motion. We propose a protocol to create topological magnetic structures in a helical background. We furthermore analyse the stability and current-driven motion of the skyrmions in a helical background with in-plane uniaxial anisotropy fixing the orientation of the helices
Camillo Sitte: Romantic or Realist? the Picturesque City Reconsidered
AbstractAustrian architect Camillo Sitte, author of the important treatise on urban design, Der Städtebau nach seinen künstlerischen Grundsätzen (1889), is known as the founder of romantic "picturesque" urbanism. One has to differentiate, however, between the two meanings of the German term das Malerische: "picturesque" and "painterly." Sitte is clearly connected with the representatives of modem picturesque urbanism. In his "Townscape Casebook," Gordon Cullen published a collection of photos and sketches to reinvigorate a picturesque way of seeing and thus set forth a basis for the design of the environment based on picturesque principles. Cullen proposed the concept of the townscape to develop a comprehensive "field of vision" that gathered heterogeneous elements into a unified whole - an idea that influenced the work of the American urban theorist Kevin Lynch. In fact, populist arguments could be detected in those representations of the picturesque as a way of seeing that corresponded to the supposed "national character." Sitte himself expected a "unified national work of art" to emerge as a result of the "popular synthesizing" of all the visual arts.
