Piazzoli, Erika (2018): Embodying Language in Action: The Artistry of Process Drama for Second Language Education. London: Palgrave Macmillan

Let’s start with the image on the book cover which is placed between the author’s name and the book title. It immediately grabs our attention, shows how eight adult individuals bodily connect and create a beautiful shape that looks like a flower, or rather a flower in full bloom. Is the shape that has been created by these individuals (movement artists?) the result of excellent choreography? The ‘embodiment image’ prepares the reader for the main focus of Erika Piazzoli’s monograph (367 pages): the aesthetic dimension of foreign language teaching and learning. Reflecting on “What is ‘Artistry’ and Why Do We Need It in Second Language Education?” in Chapter 1, she then continues to address the aesthetic dimension in three parts: In Part I (chapters 2-5) she engages with “Key Definitions in the Aesthetic Dimension”; Part II (chapters 6-8) deals with aspects of “Navigating the Aesthetic Dimension”; Part III (chapters 9-12) centres on “Researching the Aesthetic Dimension”. In these twelve chapters the author deals with a broad range of theoretical perspectives, including second language education, sociocultural theory, neuroscience and art history. This review highlights some aspects of this impressive monograph by concentrating on keywords which are captured in its title: process ..

This is the Online Supplement to the following publication: Ostberg, S., Schewe, J., Childers, K., and Frieler, K.: Changes in crop yields and their variability at different levels of global warming, Earth System Dynamics, 9, 2018. The Supplement contains a number of additional figures as well as the emulator coefficients needed to apply the emulators presented in the paper to derive yield changes for any given pair of global mean temperature change (Δ\DeltaGMT) and atmospheric CO2 concentration (pCO2). Human displacements, fatalities, and economic damages linked to remotely observed floods (FLODIS)

FLODIS links estimates of flood-induced human displacements, fatalities, and economic damages to flooded areas observed through remote sensing. The repository contains the two final FLODIS datasets for displacement, fatalities and damages. Additionally, geocoded IDMC data on displacement between 2008 and 2021 is provided, which can be linked with other hazard inventories. Mester, B., Frieler, K. & Schewe, J. What Constitutes a Service on the Web?

    No full text
There are many approaches to modelling and development of service-oriented systems, but there is still no convincing answer to what a (software) service is. In this chapter, we discuss the various attempts to develop a theory of services, identify aspects that have already been addressed and extract gaps. This leads us to propose the BDCM2 framework capturing behaviour, description, contracting, monitoring and mediation. For the behavioural model, we refer to the two-layer model of Abstract State Services (AS2s) capturing functional aspects of data-intensive Web services. The model of service mediators permits building complex applications, in which parts are realised by services. Furthermore, we highlight the decisive role of service ontologies for supporting the location of services as well as the capture of contractual aspects by means of service-level agreements (SLAs). Finally, we conclude that a contract is only as good as the means to monitor the agreements. While part of the research has already reached a promising level of maturity, some aspects are still in an infant state

A novel 3D parametrization approach for topology optimization of rollbonded cooling plates

    No full text
Electric mobility depends on batteries, which typically require a thermal management system. Those systems are often realized as sheet metal plates with integrated channel structures. Rollbonding technology is one of the most promising technologies to produce such cooling plates due to the competitive cost structure in combination with its unmatched design freedom. However, the design of a cooling plate manufactured using rollbonding is challenging. Such a design requires thermal and hydraulic targets to be considered while manufacturing constraints must be satisfied. Due to the given design freedom and the conflicting targets manual design of cooling plates is challenging and requires significant development time and effort. Topology optimization is a popular method for automated and optimal design of components. In this paper, the authors present a strategy to design rollbonded cooling plates by topology optimization, taking thermal, hydraulic, and manufacturing requirements into account. State-of-the-art methods usually consider channel shapes with rectangular cross-sections, ignoring the effects of realistically curved channel cross-sections as they result from the manufacturing technology. The authors present a novel parametrization strategy, considering the 3D channel shape in a realistic manner. The mathematical formulation of the novel modelling approach is shown and validated based on a small, simplified test case. The methodology is implemented into a custom, solver-agnostic framework and coupled with commercial Finite Element software

category: Co-morbidities Abstract body Purpose: The use of dolutegravir (DTG) has been associated with weight gain and potential risk for hypertension. We evaluated change in blood pressure, weight and other cardiovascular disease risk factors in the Second-line Switch to DTG study (2SD). Method: The 2SD study evaluated the efficacy and safety of switching virally suppressed adults on ritonavir-boosted protease inhibitor (PI/r) based second line regi-men to DTG relative to remaining on a PI/r over 48 weeks. The primary outcomes of this post-hoc analysis were incident hypertension and weight gain. Secondary outcomes included change in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, change in blood sugar, incident diabetes and change in Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) 10 year risk prediction score. The incidence rate ratio of hypertension was compared between groups and multivariable analysis conducted for predictors 1 of incident hypertension. Results: Data from 795 participants (397 DTG, 398 PI/r) enrolled into the study between Feb and Sep 2020 was analysed. All participants were black and 66% were female, with baseline characteristics balanced between arms. Incident hypertension occurred in 161 participants (86 in the DTG arm and 75 in the PI/r arm) with an incidence rate of 31.4% (33.4% on DTG, 29.3% on PI/r, p = 0.4). Changes in systolic and diastolic BP are highlighted in Figure 1. The percentage change in body mass index (BMI) was 2.1 in the DTG arm and 1.3 in the PI/r arm (p = 0.019) (Figure 2). Incident diabetes occurred in 26 (3.3%) participants (3.5% on DTG, 3.0% on PI/r, p = 0.2). The ASCVD score worsened in 16% of participants (16% on DTG, 15% on PI/r, p = 0.5) (Table 1). Predictors of incident hypertension included age, body mass index and creatinine clearance. Conclusions: DTG was associated with higher weight gain; there was no difference in incident hypertension, blood pressure changes or overall CVD risk stratification between groups
