Optical spectroscopy of heavily Ho3+-doped BaY2F8 crystals

    No full text
The ultraviolet, visible, and near IR (0.8-2.4 mu m) luminescence spectra of BaY2F8 single crystals heavily doped with Ho3+ ions (10 and 30 mol%) have been investigated at room temperature and 12 K, together with the luminescence decay curves (up to 300 mu s) of the visible emission. Excitation in the visible region gives rise to very strong emission bands originating from the first I-5(7) level and located around 2070 nm. However the I-5(7) emission is not observed upon excitation at wavelengths shorter than 300 nm. The inter-ionic processes are found to shorten the decay times of the levels emitting in the visible region with respect to the corresponding radiative lifetimes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Temperature dependence of impurity quenched luminescence in Tm3+: LiLuF4

    No full text
The study of the optical properties of a LiLuF(4) crystal doped with Tm(3+) yielded the discovery of a strong temperature dependence of the Tm-Tm diffusion coefficient. Spectroscopic characteristics have been investigated as a function of the sample temperature, with particular regard to the luminescence decay following pulsed excitation. An appreciable excitation of the lifetime of the (3)F(4) manifold is observed over the temperature range 8.9-298 K. The Judd-Ofelt calculations point out a radiative lifetime considerably longer than the experimental one. These facts suggest a theoretical interpretation based on the presence of impurities that quench the manifold and on a temperature-dependent energy migration between Tm(3+) ions. A one-parameter best fit of the experimental measurements strongly confirms this hypothesis. Weak OH(-) ion concentration is detected by means of IR and UV spectra, thus supporting the theoretical interpretation. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

Optical spectroscopy and diode-pumped laser performance of Nd3+ in the CNCG crystal

We have exploited the broad absorption and emission bandwidth of the laser crystal Ca-3(NbGa)(2) - (x) Ga-3 O-12 doped with Nd3+ to develop a tunable and mode locked diode-pumped 1.06 mum laser, We also present the fluorescence and excitation spectra at different crystal temperatures from 10 to 298 K, The spontaneous transition probabilities, the branching ratios, and the radiative lifetime are calculated by means of the Judd-Ofelt theory and compared with the experimental results, The stimulated emission cross-sections of the most important transitions have been calculated and compared with laser results, Employing a 2-W laser diode as a continuous-wave pump source, we have been able to tune the emission wavelength in the range 1053-1074 nm, Active mode-locking yielding pulses of 9.6, 18, and 19.7 ps at the three main emission peaks of 1058.6, 1061.1, and 1065.3 nm, respectively, was also demonstrated

    Marchantiaceae

Notes on Marchantiaceae taxa in East Asia With the publication of novel and regionally recorded taxa, the Marchantiaceae in East Asia is represented by three well-recognized genera (Zheng & Shimamura 2022a), including 14 taxa (Bischler-Causse 1989; Long & Crandall-Stotler 2020; Xiang et al. 2016, 2022; Zheng & Shimamura 2020, 2022a, 2022b; Zheng & Long, 2023). Among them, some taxa doubtfully recorded in the Chinese bryoflora (Marchantia emarginata subsp. emarginata and M. stoloniscyphulus (Gao & Chang 1982: 114) Piippo 1990: 134) warrant a brief discussion in this study. Marchantia emarginata subsp. emarginata was first reported by Chao (1943, as “ M. palmata Nees ”) and subsequently recorded in some regional studies (Jia & He 2013; Xiong & Cao 2018) in China. However, Zheng (unpublished) found that (1) subgeneric classification of the M. emarginata complex is geographical rather than morphological, (2) there is excessive morphological diversity within the specimens identified as subsp. emarginata by the original author and (3) the distinguishing character of this subspecies (e.g., epidermal papillae and narrower appendages of ventral median scales) are not easily observed in some Southeast Asian specimens, indicating that the present treatments and morphological definition of subsp. emarginata are not tenable and need to be further reviewed. For M. stoloniscyphulus, Zheng et al. (unpublished) have been able to show that it is conspecific with M. papillata Raddi (1822: 20) subsp. grossibarba (Stephani 1894b: 221) Bischler (1989: 78) rather than being an independent species. Therefore, both taxa should be excluded from the following key.Published as part of Zheng, Tian-Xiong, Long, David G. & Shimamura, Masaki, 2023, Range extension of Marchantia formosana (Marchantiaceae, Marchantiophyta), with an updated key to Marchantiaceae taxa in East Asia, pp. 93-98 in Phytotaxa 612 (1) on page 96, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.612.1.8, http://zenodo.org/record/830890

VUV–UV 5d–4f interconfigurational transitions of Nd3+Nd^3+ in BaMgF4BaMgF_4 ferroelectric crystals

    No full text
BaMgF4 single crystals doped with Nd3+ are of great interest as possible active media for VUV–UV and mid-IR all solid-state lasers. The luminescence spectroscopy and the excited state dynamics of these crystals are investigated for the first time upon VUV excitation using synchrotron radiation. The material shows fast Nd3+ 5d–4f emission upon direct VUV excitation into Nd3+ 5d levels. The decay kinetics of the Nd3+ 5d–4f emission in this host lattice upon direct VUV excitation of 5d levels is characterized by a lifetime of about 14 ns with no significant rise after the excitation pulse. No significant temperature dependence of the lifetime is observed within the range 8–300 K

Management of a large lesion of monostotic fibrous dysplasia with possible malignant transformation

A 50-year-old male presented with a large mass involving the left third rib following more than 30 years of a slow growing asymptomatic swelling in the chest wall. Computerised tomography (CT) scan showed a mass 7 × 10 cm expanding the left third rib and having a sclerotic outer margin which showed discontinuity and raising the possibility of malignancy arising in longstanding fibrous dysplasia (FD). Needle biopsy is confirmed fibrous dysplasia. Histological examination of the completely resected lesion confirmed the absence of malignancy. The patient made an uneventiful recovery. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.Yoshio Shimamura, Kazuo Kaneko, Barrie Vernon-Roberts, Yasuo Yazaw
