The author explores the poetic effect that has the inclusion of foreign words in a literary text in the case of the Peruvian vanguard writers. Since they are unintelligible or barely intelligible words, their usage refers us to the type of aphasia that comes from a disorder in the metaphoric axis, which affects the similarity/difference of language. Lauer reflects on why the vanguard poets resorted to the use of foreign words. In this sense, he is interested in highlighting the overlapping among modernity, “techno terminology” and “foreignicity of discourse”, and between cosmopolitanism and local knowledge. Lauer holds that taking on a word from another language “expresses the desire of severing from the sources of a tradition, and is a criticism to a given sensitivity”. The author reflects about the poetic uses of foreign words from a point of view that focuses on the senses they unfold, as well as the graphic, sound, and communicational aspects
Bats of Florida (poster)
This poster, created by Meghan E. Lauer and Holly K. Ober and published by the UF/IFAS Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation shows photographs of the 13 species of bats that are resident to Florida. Text associated with each photo tells the common and scientific name of each species, as well as information on the types of structures in which each commonly roosts.

Estimation of the cost of MS in Europe – Extrapolations from a multinational cost study
The present study aims at estimating the total cost of MS in Europe based on actual cost data from nine countries and published epidemiological evidence. The epidemiological data are reported as 12 months prevalence estimates and cost data calculated as annual cost per patient at given levels of disease severity. Cost data are extrapolated to the rest of Europe based on a model, using economic indexes adjusting for price level differences in different sectors between countries. The aggregated annual cost estimates are presented in Euro for 2005. In 28 European countries with a population of 466 million, an estimated 380 000 individuals are affected by MS. The total annual cost of MS in Europe is estimated at ∈12.5 billion in year 2005, corresponding to a cost of ∈27 per European inhabitant. Direct costs represent slightly more than half of the total cost (∈6.0 billion). Informal care is estimated at ∈3.2 billion, and indirect costs due to morbidity at ∈3.2 billion. Thus, the largest co..
Real-time microdamage and strain detection during micromechanical testing of single trabeculae
For the assessment of local deformations, we recently combined mechanical testing of trabecular bone with high-speed photography. In a previous study on cuboids of human vertebral trabecular bone we found strained trabeculae to whiten, and scanning electron microscopy showed excessive microdamage in whitened zones. In the presented study we tested single trabeculae from bovine femur and tibia in a three-point-bending geometry. Whitening was detected in the form of an ellipsoid zone on the tension side on tested trabeculae. Upon crack formation the whitening fades and a whitened zone following the propagating crack tip can be seen In addition to whitening/microdamage assessment we use ink marks applied to the samples and a modified digital image correlation to obtain the local strains involved in whitening and formation. In the presented loading case the tensile strain along the long axis of the trabecula qualitatively correlates best with the whitening zones seen. Whitening and thus microdamage initiates around a local tensile strain of 3%, whereas crack initiation occurs at strains around 13%. Our results allow for the first time to correlate microdamage and local strains directly, which is direly needed for the development of realistic damage models used in finite element analyses

Costing RTS,S introduction in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda: A generalizable approach drawing on publicly available data
Recent results from the phase 3 trial of RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine show that the vaccine induced partial protection against clinical malaria in infants and children; given the high burden of the disease it is currently considered for use in malaria endemic countries. To inform adoption decisions the paper proposes a generalizable methodology to estimate the cost of vaccine introduction using routinely collected and publicly available data from the cMYP, UNICEF, and WHO-CHOICE. Costing is carried out around a set of generic activities, assumptions, and inputs for delivery of immunization services adapted to a given country and deployment modality to capture among other factors the structure of the EPI program, distribution model, geography, and demographics particular to the setting. The methodology is applied to estimate the cost of RTS,S introduction in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda. At an assumed vaccine price of 23.11-4.2 million per year or an additional $2.4 per infant depending on the level of spare capacity in the system. Differences in cost of vaccine introduction across countries are primarily driven by differences in cost of labour. Overall estimates generated with the methodology result in costs within the ranges reported for other new vaccines introduced in SSA and capture multiple sources of heterogeneity in costs across countries. Further validation with data from field trials will support use of the methodology while also serving as a validation for cMYP and WHO-CHOICE as resources for costing health interventions in the region
