Abstract
Synthetic fingerprints, when properly generated, represent a reasonable substitute for real fingerprints for the design, training, and benchmarking of fingerprint recognition algorithms. This approach is particularly useful to deal with emerging privacy regulations (e.g., EU-GDPR) limiting the use of personally identifiable information. This chapter introduces fingerprint synthesis and focuses on the two main categories of generation approaches: (i) first generate a master fingerprint and then derive multiple impressions (e.g., SFinGe); (ii) generative models (e.g., GAN) for the direct synthesis of fingerprint images. Validation of synthetic generators through large scale experiments is finally presented
Anil K. Jain
Anil K. Jain is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at Michigan State University. He received his B.Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1969 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Ohio State University in 1970 and 1973 respectively. His research interests include pattern recognition, computer vision and biometric recognition. His articles on biometrics have appeared in some of the fields top journals. He has received a number of awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Humboldt Research Award, Fulbright Fellowship, IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award, and the MSU Withrow Teaching Excellence Award for contributions to pattern recognition and biometrics. He has been listed among the "18 Indian Minds Who are Doing Cutting Edge Work" in the fields of science and technology and received the 2014 Innovator of the Year Award at MSU. Jain has been assigned six U.S. patents on fingerprint matching (transferred to IBM in 1999) and two Korean patents on surveillance. The Institute for Scientific Information has designated him as a highly cited researcher with more than 108,000 citations stemming from his works

Prof. Sudhir K. Jain
Dr. Sudhir K. Jain is Adjunct Professor and former Head of the Department of Management Studies, I.I.T. Delhi. Previously, he has served as Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra (J&K) during February 2013 to March 2016 and as Executive Director, National Institute for Entrepreneurship & Small Business Development under the Ministry of MSME (Govt. of India) during 2002-2003. He has published over 200 research papers in reputed international/national journals and conference-proceedings. He has successfully supervised about 30Ph.D. scholars and conducted over 100 Research& Consultancy projects and MDPs. He has also coauthored the book “Managerial Economics” with Prof. H. Craig Petersen and Prof. W. Chris Lewis of Utah State University (USA), published by Pearson Education. He has been a pioneer in IPR education in the country and has been closely associated with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in various capacities. He has also been MHRD-IPR-Chair Professor for five years at IIT Delhi. He has also been Chairman or Member of several expert committees set up by the Govt. of India& various State Govts. on Entrepreneurship, IPR Education Policy, Higher Education, as well as different expert committees of UGC, AICTE, NBA, NAAC, DST, NIFT etc. He has also been Advisor, UPSC. Prof. Jain was Visiting Professor, Mongolian Technical University, Ulaanbaatar in 1996. He has extensively travelled abroad to about 35 countries for different academic activities. He is Fellow of Indian Society for Training & Development and has been Chairman of its Delhi Chapter and Vice President (North India). FVC2004: Third Fingerprint Verification Competition
A new technology evaluation of fingerprint verification algorithms has been organized following the approach of the previous FVC2000 and FVC2002 evaluations, with the aim of tracking the quickly evolving state-of-the-art of fingerprint recognition systems. Three sensors have been used for data collection, including a solid state sweeping sensor, and two optical sensors of different characteristics. The competition included a new category dedicated to “light” systems, characterized by limited computational and storage resources. This paper summarizes the main activities of the FVC2004 organization and provides a first overview of the evaluation. Results will be further elaborated and officially presented at the International Conference on Biometric Authentication (Hong Kong) on July 2004

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
