Tolerance, bioavailability, and potential cognitive health implications of a distinct aqueous spearmint extract
No full textBackground: Cognitive function can decline during the aging process and significantly reduce quality of life. Although a number of interventions have been investigated for cognitive dysfunction, including antioxidants, this prominent health concern warrants further exploration of additional methods to support cognitive health later in life. An aqueous extract from a proprietary spearmint line has been developed which contains a number of antioxidant compounds, including rosmarinic acid, at higher levels than typically found in commercially-bred spearmint. Therefore, this pilot trial assessed the tolerance, bioavailability, and potential cognitive health implications of a proprietary spearmint extract in men and women with self-reported memory impairment. Methods: Subjects consumed 900 mg/day spearmint extract for 30 days. The sample population (N = 11) was 73% female and 27% male with a mean age of 58.7 ± 1.6 y. Tolerability parameters were assessed at baseline and end of treatment visits. Computerized cognitive function tests were completed and blood was drawn at pre-and post-dose (0.5 to 4 h) timepoints during baseline and end of treatment visits. Subjective cognition was also assessed at the end of treatment. Results: Neither serious adverse events nor clinically relevant findings were observed in any tolerability parameters. Plasma vanillic, caffeic, and ferulic acid sulfates, rosmarinic acid, and methyl rosmarinic acid glucuronide were detected in plasma following acute administration of the spearmint extract. Computerized cognitive function scores improved in reasoning (P =0.023) and attention/concentration (P = 0.002) after 30 days of supplementation. After acute administration, subjects had improved attention/concentration in two tests at 2 (P = 0.042 and P = 0.025) and 4 h (P = 0.001 and P = 0.002). Conclusions: The results from this pilot trial suggest that the spearmint extract, which contains higher rosmarinic acid content relative to extracts from typical commercial lines, was well-Tolerated at 900 mg/day. The extract was also bioavailable. Further investigation is warranted regarding its potential for supporting cognitive health

No full text"The Establishment History Panel (BHP) for 1975 to 2006 includes all of the establishments throughout Germany which have at least one employee liable to social security as of the 30th of June of a given year or which have also had at least one marginal part-time employee as of 1999. For establishments in West Germany the observation period is the period 1975 to 2006 and for establishments in East Germany 1991 to 2006. The data source for the BHP is the Employee and Benefit Recipient History (BLH) of the IAB. The data on individuals contained in the BLH are aggregated to establishment level using the establishment numbers. The BHP covers between 1.3 and 2.7 million establishments per year. The individual annual waves can be linked to a panel dataset via the identifier 'artificial establishment number', which can be found in the dataset. This data report describes the variables of the weakly anonymous version of the 1975-2006 BHP basic dataset, which is available to researchers for on-site use at the Research Data Centre (FDZ) or for remote data access also. These BHP data are predominantly original data, with the sole exception that the original establishment numbers, which are direct identifiers for the different establishments, were replaced by artificial establishment numbers. The sensitive characteristics contained in the dataset, i.e. German Classification of Economic Activities 93 as 5- digit codes, German Classification of Economic Activities 03 as 5-digit codes, and Place of Work (District), are made available in the original on request and in well-founded cases only; all other users are given these variables in their aggregate forms only (as 3-digit codes or according to German States). This report will begin with a brief description of the sources used for the BHP, as well as the generation and processing of the BHP, followed by individual detailed explanations on the variables of the BHP 1975-2006. This data report contains no frequency tables for the individual variables. These are given in a separate text file that can be found on the FDZ homepage. The Establishment History Panel
No full text"The Establishment History Panel (BHP) consists of person-related data from the registration for social security contributions which were aggregated on the establishment level. In contrast to the Establishment Panel and the Linked-Employer-Employee Data (LIAB), the BHP is not a random sample but covers the total population. Each year, the BHP includes between 1.5 and 2.5 million establishments. The data are available for the years 1975 up to 2005. In comparison, Establishment Panel and LIAB data start in 1993 only. The BHP's yearly cross-sections can be merged to form a panel data set because the BHP includes the necessary identifiers. Comprehensive empirical studies concerning workplace dynamics are possible with this data set. A further considerable advantage of the BHP is that questions based on regional characteristics can be analysed and that the founding or closing date of an establishment can be identified. The possibility to combine the annual data sets into a single panel data set opens up a wide range of research questions. This article is intended to provide an outline of the data content, data access and possible research questions. The main topic of the text is a description of the BHP base file. I will also sketch some of the future steps we will take to extend the data set by means of so-called extension files. Finally, I will describe a new FDZ project which uses BHP data."
