"Meidän oma Yrjö" : Eemil Nestor Setälä ja Yrjö Wichmann yhteistyökumppaneina
E. N.
Setälä ja Yrjö Wichmann työskentelivät kollegoina sekä Helsingin
Yliopistossa että useissa tieteellisissä seuroissa suomen ja sen
sukukielten tutkimuksen arvostettuina edustajina. Varsinkin uransa
alkutaipaleella he olivat perheystäviä ja yhteistyökumppaneita,

Iterated Function System and diffusion in the presence of traps
The escape probability ξx from a site x of a one-dimensional disordered lattice with trapping is treated as a discrete dynamical evolution by random iterations over nonlinear maps parametrized by the right and left jump probabilities. The invariant measure of the dynamics is found to be a multifractal. However the measure becomes uniform over the support when the disorder becomes weak for any nonzero trapping probability. Possible implications of our findings to diffusion processes are brought out briefly

Fracture behaviour of fumed silica/epoxy nanocomposites
The paper shows the results of ail experimental programme oriented to the manufacturing and characterisation of nanocomposites based on epoxy resin modified with fumed silica nanaparticles (0. 1, 0.3 and 0.5 vol.%) with different surface treatments (unmodified, AMEO and GLYMO). The resulting degree of dispersion and the interfacial adhesion were investigated by TEM and SEM. Previous tensile and fracture toughness properties are discussed together with new results on the fatigue behaviour under mode 1 loading. The fracture toughness K(Ic), turned out to be significantly increased and a positive trend towards the improvement in the crack propagation threshold under fatigue was observe
Influence of surface treatment on mechanical behaviour of fumed silica/epoxy resin nano-composites
The present paper shows the potential of fumed silica as nano-reinforcements in polymers, by considering the limitations and challenges one has to face dealing with nanoparticles in general. The dominating effect of the manufacturing route and surface properties of fumed silica influencing the resulting degree of dispersion and the interfacial adhesion were investigated by electron microscopy (TEM, SEM). The resulting (fracture-) mechanical properties of the fumed silica/epoxy composites were investigated for volume contents of 0.5 vol% and below. Independent of the surface modification, static and dynamic modulus decreased slightly by adding the fumed silica. Hence, the fracture toughness K-Ic turned out to be significantly increased (54%) adding only 0.5 vol% of surface modified fumed silica
Basal Ganglia Neurons in Healthy and Parkinsonian Primates Generate Recurring Sequences of Spikes
These data are the source data for the manuscript entitled "Basal Ganglia Neurons in Healthy
and Parkinsonian Primates Generate Recurring Sequences of Spikes", authored by Adriana Galvan
and Thomas Wichmann (Emory University, Atlanta, GA).
The data are interspike interval measurements generated from electrophysiological recordings
of spontaneous spiking activities of single neurons in the basal ganglia of awake monkeys, before
and after rendering them parkinsonian by treatment with MPTP. THe animals were not engaged in any
task or other structured activity.
The data format is a one-column listing of successive interspike intervals, and are presented in
milliseconds. The data are structured into different folders:
GPe normal - data collected in the external pallidal segment, under normal conditions
GPe MPTP - data collected in the external pallidal segment, under parkinsonian conditions
STN normal - data collected in the subthalamic nucleus, under normal conditions
STN MPTP - data collected in the subthalamic nucleus, under parkinsonian conditions
GPi normal - data collected in the internal pallidal segment, under normal conditions
GPi MPTP - data collected in the internal pallidal segment, under parkinsonian conditions
A 'Read Me' file is included, containing these explanations.

“The Intersection between Justice and Home Affairs and the European Neighbourhood Policy: Taking Stock of the Logic, Objectives and Practices.” CEPS Working Document No. 275, October 2007
This paper claims that the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) of the EU, and in particular the elements related to justice and home affairs (JHA), is a complex, multilayered initiative that incorporates different logics and instruments. To unravel the various layers of the policy, the paper proceeds in three steps: firstly, it lays out some facts pertaining to the origins of the ENP, as its ‘origins’ arguably account for a number of the core tensions. It then presents the underlying logic and objectives attributed to JHA cooperation, which can be derived from the viewpoints voiced during policy formulation. The paper goes on to argue that despite the existence of different logics, there is a unifying objective, which is to ‘extra-territorialise’ the management of ‘threats’ to the neighbouring countries. The core of the paper presents the various policy measures that have been put in place to achieve external ‘threat management’. In this context it is argued that the ’conditionality-inspired policy instruments’, namely monitoring and benchmarking of progress, transfer of legal and institutional models to non-member states and inter-governmental negotiations, contain socialisation elements that rely on the common values approach. This mix of conditionality and socialisation instruments is illustrated in two case studies, one on the fight against terrorism and one on irregular migration. Finally, the paper recommends that the EU draft an Action-Oriented Paper (AOP) on JHA cooperation with the ENP countries that indicates how the EU intends to balance the conflicting objectives and instruments that are currently present in the JHA provisions of the ENP
