Plasma thyroxine and cholesterol concentrations of miniature pigs are influenced by thermally oxidized dietary lipids
To investigate the effect of a dietary oxidized oil on thyroid hormone status and circulating cholesterol, we conducted a study with 16 male miniature pigs fed a nutritionally adequate diet with 15% of either fresh or thermoxidized oil for 35 d (n = 8/group). The thermoxidized oil was prepared by heating sunflower oil at 110 degrees C for 48 h. The fresh oil consisted of a mixture of sunflower oil and lard (94:6, v/v) which had a fatty acid composition similar to the thermoxidized oil. At the end of the study, there were no differences in body weight gains and plasma clinicochemical variables between groups, suggesting that the thermoxidized oil did not induce general toxic symptoms. However, pigs fed the thermoxidized oil had significantly higher plasma concentrations of total and free thyroxine (P < 0.05) and a tendency for a higher plasma concentration of thyroid hormone-stimulating hormone (P < 0.1) than pigs fed the fresh oil. Additionally, pigs fed the thermoxidized oil had lower concentrations of cholesterol in plasma, LDL and HDL (P < 0.05), There were significant negative correlations between the plasma concentrations of total (r = -0.29) and free thyroxine (r = -0.40) and that of cholesterol (P < 0.05), suggesting that there is a causal relationship between the changes in thyroxine concentration and the reduction of plasma cholesterol, Our results indicate that there is a close relationship between alterations of thyroid hormone status and cholesterol metabolism in pigs fed a thermoxidized oil, and dietary oxidized fats should be considered in thyroid hormone disorders

The structure of a penumbral connection between solar pores
High resolution 2D-spectro-polarimetric observations
have been used to analyse the magnetic field and flow topologies
of a penumbral connection between two opposite polarity solar
pores. A filamentary structured Evershed-like material flow from
one pore to the other along the magnetic field lines has been
detected. The flow channels are co-spatial with bright penumbral
filaments close to the pore which feeds the flow and the clear
brightness-velocity relation vanishes close to the pore which
represents the sink of the flow. The boundary between umbra and
penumbra of the two pores show significant differences: bright
comet-like penumbral grains represent endings of penumbral
filaments at the flow sources whereas no such grains were found at
the sinks of the flow. Furthermore, a systematic variation of the
asymmetries of measured Stokes V profiles across the penumbral
connection have been found. The obtained results are in accordance
with the widely-accepted uncombed penumbra hypothesis and the moving
flux tube model

This article is part of a series of short monographies devoted to penal reforms in European countries (see vol. VII/2 and VIII/3 of this periodical). The author sets up the chronology of the public debates and bills concerning penal law in post World War II Austria. He describes carefully the political and ideological context of these events. Austria has adopted 1974 a new penal Code, which is the latest great Western codification in this matter.
The issue of marketing metrics in the digital era is particularly relevant given the potential opportunities provided by 'big data' and the need to understand how to evaluate social media marketing activity. The section opens with a review of quantitative methods in tourism marketing research (Chapter 14). Mazanec, Ring, Stangl and Teichmann begin by reviewing the main techniques used in tourism marketing research. They argue that in general there is a lag in methods being adopted in tourism research from the main marketing field. Examples such as Principal Component Analysis and social and semantic network analysis are provided. The authors deal with foundational issues such as critical factors underpinning knowledge drawn from scales; a range of issues relating to assumptions underpinning Structural Equation Modelling; segmentation and clustering techniques and discrete choice modelling. The chapter synthesizes the main methodological issues facing quantitative marketing analysts in tourism and provides new avenues for future research that promise to overcome current challenges
