Viewpoint cinema and construction of identity:Dr Rajkumar phenomenon in Karnataka
Aided by science and technology cinema has become a medium for entertainment, business, dialogue, propaganda, education, religion, and culture. The year 1954 becomes extremely important for Kannada cinema as there comes a turning point. The movie Bedara Kannappa starring S. P. MuthuRaj rechristened as Rajkumar by the film’s producer Gubbi Veeranna was released. The movie created box office history gave a much needed boost to the ailing and struggling Kannada cinema. Rajkumar was to set the standards for both acting skills, sustenance and consolidation of the mass adulation that followed him. He was a product of theatre which nurtured and refined him. His impeccable voice complimented his acting. Another significant contribution has been introducing the best of Kannada literary works and poetry to the Kannada subaltern by their cinematic reproductions. Gradually, one sees the evolution of a least educated, rural, backward caste man becoming the symbol of Kannada, cultural icon and the identity of Kannada cinema
A Non-Sequential Representation of Sequential Data for Churn Prediction
We investigate the length of event sequence giving best predictions
when using a continuous HMM approach to churn prediction from sequential
data. Motivated by observations that predictions based on only the few most recent
events seem to be the most accurate, a non-sequential dataset is constructed
from customer event histories by averaging features of the last few events. A simple
K-nearest neighbor algorithm on this dataset is found to give significantly
improved performance. It is quite intuitive to think that most people will react
only to events in the fairly recent past. Events related to telecommunications occurring
months or years ago are unlikely to have a large impact on a customer’s
future behaviour, and these results bear this out. Methods that deal with sequential
data also tend to be much more complex than those dealing with simple nontemporal
data, giving an added benefit to expressing the recent information in a
non-sequential manner

Customised customer support using a soft computing approach
This paper describes the research and development of a methodology to identify
the type of information required by the service advisor (CSA) within customer
contact centre (CCC) environment. Data was collected through case studies
carried out within five customer contact centres to derive the categories for
customers and advisors based on demographic, experience, business value and
behavioural attributes. We provide the methodology to develop a fuzzy expert
system which assigns a new customer or advisor to the predefined categories. The
authors have explained the steps which were followed for the development of the
fuzzy expert system. A prototype system has been designed and developed to
identify the type of customer and CSA based on the demographic, experience and
behavioural attributes. The authors illustrate analysis with real data, based on
the work with large scale customer contact centres. Validation of the
information requirement model was carried out at the contact centres

Irbesartan improves arterial compliance more than lisinopril.
BACKGROUND:
Antihypertensive agents can reduce arterial stiffness. We hypothesized that an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) irbesartan and an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) lisinopril improved arterial compliance.
METHODS:
A randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, controlled crossover trial. Fifteen hypertensive patients, mean age 65.5 +/- 8.9 years (mean +/- SD) were given irbesartan (150 to 300 mg/day) or lisinopril (10 to 20 mg/day) for 12 weeks and then crossed over for 12 weeks. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) in the carotid-femoral (CF), carotid-radial (CR), and femoral dorsalis-pedis (FD) were measured using a Complior((R)) PWV system.
RESULTS:
After 12 weeks, systolic blood pressure (SBP) decreased from 162.4 +/- 12.9 to 134.5 +/- 14.8 with irbesartan and to 145.2 +/- 25 mmHg with lisinopril. Irbesartan and lisinopril reduced PWV (CF) in the elastic arterial system from 15.1 +/- 5 to 13.3 +/- 2.6 (p < 0.005) and to 14 +/- 4.7 (p < 0.05) m/s respectively (p = 0.345). Irbesartan reduced PWV (CR) and PWV (FD), whereas lisinopril did not. The difference between treatments was significant after SBP adjustment (p = 0.037 for PWV (CR) and p < 0.001 for PWV (FD)).
CONCLUSIONS:
Irbesartan improved arterial compliance in elastic and muscular arteries, whereas lisinopril improved it only in elastic arteries
Optimization of Culture Conditions for the Production of Protease from Bacillus megaterium
AbstractIn this Study, Bacillus megaterium was used for protease production to examine the optimal condition for its maximum accumulation. Hence the production of enzyme was investigated at various pH, temperature, NaCl concentrations and different carbon and nitrogen sources. The medium amended with 3.0% NaCl, 1.0% gelatin, 0. 4% lactose, 0.5% peptone and pH 9, incubation at 40°C for 42 h were supported maximum protease production of 78.5 U/ml. ---Centre for Advanced studies in Botany, University of Madras, Guindy campus, Chennai- 600 025, India---Please Cite This Article As:  R. Improvement of cost estimating internal practice.
This thesis is concerned with understanding the internal costing practices employed
by commercial and engineering disciplines of cost estimating for generating
estimates at the conceptual design stage of complex hardware products. It examines
whether there is a formal structure in the interaction between the two groups that
can be represented within a model. The aim is to develop a framework that will
formalise and improve the communication of commercial and engineering
disciplines in cost estimating.
A literature review examines the role of different costing techniques and the
information requirements for generating cost estimates. The review identifies that
there is a lack of research in the information requirements for cost estimating of
specific manufacturing industries, and that the interaction of commercial and
engineering disciplines of cost estimating at conceptual design stage is hindered by
the different focuses of these groups.
By conducting a survey study the author identifies the internal practice in
cost estimating for the automotive industry. The survey establishesth at in order to
improve the internal practice it is essential to establish a data infrastructure that
fortnalises and enables the reuse of the cost estimates and improves the interaction
between the two groups. The author identifies a common cost estimating process
for the automotive industry. This study establishes the required data and
information elements and information sources that need to be collected in order to
have reliable data infrastructure. Using a case study approach, the author also
establishes that it is essential to analyse the product functions in such a way that
will enable the development of a detailed cost estimating model at the conceptual
design stage, which will improve interaction between the commercial and
engineering groups. The function-based cost estimating process becomes the focus
of detailed studies using experts from the automotive industry. This results in a
generic framework that provides a formalised structure to represent functional
requirements in the form of a detailed cost estimating model.
The thesis concludes that product functions need to be captured and
analysedd uring the conceptuald evelopmento f a product and be associatedto cost
estimates. The developed results provide both groups of cost estimating a
structured, consistent approach to developing cost estimates at the conceptual
design stage. The data infrastructure and the function-based cost estimating
framework is validated through case studies and expert evaluation. The approach
contributes towards improvement of the internal cost estimating practice with the
automotive industry
