    A systematic reflection upon dual career couples

    Particularly among the highly educated, a persistent upward trend in female employment rates has characterized western industrialized countries in the last decades. Yet, strong gender inequalities persist in the career chances of equally highly qualified men and women. Women are still underrepresented in executive/ leading positions in both the private and public sector of the economy. We argue that such gender inequalities are also due to the fact that the majority of highly educated women lives with an equally highly educated partner. For these women the realization of dual careers becomes ever more important and represents an essential prerequisite for their own professional development. Following Phyllis Moen's 'linked lives' idea, we will argue that the achievement or failure of dual-career arrangements is a 'social-relational process' (Moen 2003a: 10) and that partners' lives are embedded with and influenced by each other. In particular, we will discuss how this entwining occurs, which processes at different levels play a role, and how these different processes interact with each other. Finally, we will give some suggestions on the direction for future research. -- Vor allem bei Hochqualifizierten charakterisiert ein andauernder Aufwärtstrend weiblicher Beschäftigungsraten die westlichen Industrieländer in den letzten Jahrzehnten. Jedoch herrscht bei den Karrierechancen von gleich qualifizierten Männern und Frauen noch immer eine große Geschlechterungleichheit vor. Frauen sind in führenden/leitenden Positionen sowohl im privatwirtschaftlichen als auch im öffentlichen Beschäftigungssektor noch immer unterrepräsentiert. Wir argumentieren, dass solche Geschlechterungleichheiten auf den Umstand zurückzuführen sind, dass die Mehrzahl hoch gebildeter Frauen mit gleichermaßen hoch gebildeten Partnern zusammenlebt. Für diese Frauen gewinnt die Realisierung von Doppelkarrieren an Bedeutung und stellt eine entscheidende Voraussetzung für ihre eigene professionelle Entwicklung dar. In Anlehnung an Phyllis Moens "linked lives" Idee werden wir diskutieren, dass der Erfolg oder das Scheitern von Doppelkarrierenarrangements ein "social- relational process" (Moen 2003a: 10) ist und dass die Lebensverläufe der Partner miteinander verwoben und voneinander abhängig sind. Im Einzelnen werden wir diskutieren, wie diese Verflechtung sich gestaltet, welche Prozesse auf verschiedenen Ebenen eine Rolle spielen und wie diese Prozesse miteinander interagieren. Zum Schluss werden wir Vorschläge für die Richtung zukünftiger Forschungen formulieren.

    Measuring Helping Behavior Across Cultures

    This chapter focuses on some of the special challenges and difficulties in conducting cross-cultural research. In particular, it describes some of the problems my colleagues and I have faced in our own research: a series of studies in which helpfulness toward strangers was assessed in 36 cities across the United States and 23 large cities around the world. We conducted independent field experiments in each city to measure helping in various situations, such as seeing if passersby would alert a pedestrian who dropped a pen, offer help to a pedestrian with a hurt leg trying to reach a pile of dropped magazines, assist a blind person to cross the street and retrieve a lost letter. The results of these studies are discussed, including some ways they exemplify both what can be learned from cross-cultural research and the noise or uncertainties one can expect to encounter in this learning process

    Diagnosis of Organic and Functional Pain Patients with the MMPI

    There are contradictory findings regarding the use of the MMPI to discriminate between patients with organic and functional pain. The MMPI was administered to patients, 43 with organic and 39 with functional pain, at a university hospital pain clinic. Multivariate analyses were nonsignificant, strongly suggesting that the clinical usefulness of this scale to differentiate between patients with organic and functional pain is highly questionable. </jats:p

    Simulation of the Beam Dump for a High Intensity Electron Gun

    The CLIC Drive Beam is a high-intensity pulsed electron beam. A test facility for the Drive Beam electron gun will soon be commissioned at CERN. In this contribution we outline the design of a beam dump / Faraday cup capable of resisting the beam’s thermal load. The test facility will operate initially up to 140 keV. At such low energies, the electrons are absorbed very close to the surface of the dump, leading to a large energy deposition density in this thin layer. In order not to damage the dump, the beam must be spread over a large surface. For this reason, a small-angled cone has been chosen. Simulations using Geant4 have been performed to estimate the distribution of energy deposition in the dump. The heat transport both within the electron pulse and between pulses has been modelled using finite element methods to check the resistance of the dump at high repetition rates. In addition, the possibility of using a moveable dump to measure the beam profile and emittance is discussed
