    Chan An Ancient Maya Farming Community

    The farming community of Chan thrived for over twenty centuries, surpassing the longevity of many larger Maya urban centers. Between 800 BC and 1200 AD it was a major food production center, and this collection of essays reveals the important role played by Maya farmers in the development of ancient Maya society. Chan offers a synthesis of compelling and groundbreaking discoveries gathered over ten years of research at this one archaeological site in Belize. The contributors develop three central themes, which structure the book. They examine how sustainable farming practices maintained the surrounding forest, allowing the community to exist for two millennia. They trace the origins of elite Maya state religion to the complex religious belief system developed in small communities such as Chan. Finally, they describe how the group-focused political strategies employed by local leaders differed from the highly hierarchical strategies of the Classic Maya kings in their large cities.     Del 6 al 8 de noviembre de 2018, se llevó a cabo el XXIII Simposio Román Piña Chan “Zonas arqueológicas en contextos urbanos”. Durante su desarrollo se contó con un amplio programa de trabajo que incluyó 31 ponencias, cinco conferencias magistrales y nueve sesiones de carteles. Se trató de un evento en el que participaron reconocidos académicos a nivel nacional e internacional en el ámbito de la arqueología; además de que se logró debatir y aportar ideas en un mismo foro acerca de la construcción de soluciones para la problemática de las zonas arqueológicas en contextos urbanos. El acto de clausura se efectuó con la presencia de diversas autoridades del INAH en compañía de investigadores, docentes, alumnos y público en general.</p

    Brain Tumor Segmentation Based on Bendlet Transform and Improved Chan-Vese Model

    Automated segmentation of brain tumors is a difficult procedure due to the variability and blurred boundary of the lesions. In this study, we propose an automated model based on Bendlet transform and improved Chan-Vese (CV) model for brain tumor segmentation. Since the Bendlet system is based on the principle of sparse approximation, Bendlet transform is applied to describe the images and map images to the feature space and, thereby, first obtain the feature set. This can help in effectively exploring the mapping relationship between brain lesions and normal tissues, and achieving multi-scale and multi-directional registration. Secondly, the SSIM region detection method is proposed to preliminarily locate the tumor region from three aspects of brightness, structure, and contrast. Finally, the CV model is solved by the Hermite-Shannon-Cosine wavelet homotopy method, and the boundary of the tumor region is more accurately delineated by the wavelet transform coefficient. We randomly selected some cross-sectional images to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and compared with CV, Ostu, K-FCM, and region growing segmentation methods. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm had higher segmentation accuracy and better stability

    Completely Convex Formulation of the Chan-Vese Image Segmentation Model

    The active contours without edges model of Chan and Vese (IEEE Transactions on Image Processing 10(2):266-277, 2001) is a popular method for computing the segmentation of an image into two phases, based on the piecewise constant Mumford-Shah model. The minimization problem is non-convex even when the optimal region constants are known a priori. In (SIAM Journal of Applied Mathematics 66(5):1632-1648, 2006), Chan, Esedolu, and Nikolova provided a method to compute global minimizers by showing that solutions could be obtained from a convex relaxation. In this paper, we propose a convex relaxation approach to solve the case in which both the segmentation and the optimal constants are unknown for two phases and multiple phases. In other words, we propose a convex relaxation of the popular K-means algorithm. Our approach is based on the vector-valued relaxation technique developed by Goldstein et al. (UCLA CAM Report 09-77, 2009) and Brown et al. (UCLA CAM Report 10-43, 2010). The idea is to consider the optimal constants as functions subject to a constraint on their gradient. Although the proposed relaxation technique is not guaranteed to find exact global minimizers of the original problem, our experiments show that our method computes tight approximations of the optimal solutions. Particularly, we provide numerical examples in which our method finds better solutions than the method proposed by Chan et al. (SIAM Journal of Applied Mathematics 66(5):1632-1648, 2006), whose quality of solutions depends on the choice of the initial condition.</p

    Remarks on the k-error linear complexity of p(n)-periodic sequences

    Recently the first author presented exact formulas for the number of 2ⁿn-periodic binary sequences with given 1-error linear complexity, and an exact formula for the expected 1-error linear complexity and upper and lower bounds for the expected k-error linear complexity, k >2, of a random 2ⁿn-periodic binary sequence. A crucial role for the analysis played the Chan-Games algorithm. We use a more sophisticated generalization of the Chan-Games algorithm by Ding et al. to obtain exact formulas for the counting function and the expected value for the 1-error linear complexity for pⁿn-periodic sequences over Fp, p prime. Additionally we discuss the calculation of lower and upper bounds on the k-error linear complexity of pⁿn-periodic sequences over Fp

    Broadband satellite multimedia

    The broadband satellite multimedia (BSM) architecture standardised by ETSI defines a satellite independent service access point (SI-SAP) interface layer that separates the satellite independent features of the upper layers from the satellite dependant features of the lower layers, and provides a mechanism to carry IP-based protocols over these satellite dependent lower layers. This enables interoperability at the IP layer between satellite systems of different physical and link layers technologies that fully comply with the SI-SAP concept. This study reviews past and current standardisation activities including the BSM quality of service (QoS) architecture, security architecture, network management that have been carried out by the ETSI Technical Committee-Satellite Earth Stations and Systems (TC-SES)/BSM working group and looking into the future to extend current SI-SAP functions that can enhance existing QoS provision and security management capabilities as well as proposing a mobility management architecture that complies with the IEEE 802.21 media independent handover framework to support BSM mobility and to allow integration of satellite networks with fixed and mobile network infrastructures. A service-based network management architecture is also proposed to allow management flexibility and integration of business and operation support functions, paving the way for satellite integration into the Internet of the future
