The March model applied to boron cages
Abstract: The so-called March model of fullerene, in which a self-consistent spherical distribution of pi electrons is combined with the proper nuclear-nuclear potential energy for the correct structure, is here extended to boron cages. The Thomas-Fermi approximation of the initial studies is here replaced by Hartree-Fock calculations. Explicit results for B-2k and B-2k+1(+), with k ranging from 15 to 27, are discussed and compared with calculations on similar clusters found in the literature. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Jack and the Bean-Stalk
Chapbook with some colored illustrations.
The story of Jack and the Beanstalk, where Jack trades a cow for some magic beans. The beans grow into a giant stalk into the sky, where Jack encounters giants. Jack is pursued by the giant and escapes down the stalk, which he cuts down causing the giant to fall to his death.Publication date range and identification of printer based on years that James March, the younger, operated at address given in imprint, according to P.A.H. Ornstein-Zernike function and Coulombic correlation in the homogeneous electron liquid
Abstract: Adopting the original Ornstein-Zernike (OZ) definition of the direct correlation function c(r), the present study deals with the deviation Delta(r) of c(r) induced by Coulomb correlation in the homogeneous electron liquid beyond the OZ function c(FH)(r) for purely Fermi hole (FH) statistical correlations. It is first stressed that Delta(r) at large r is proportional to the Coulomb potential energy e(2)/r, suitably scaled with the plasma frequency. Both r space and k space formulations are presented. In k space, direct numerical use is made of inequalities due to Kugler [Phys. Rev. A 1, 1688 (1970)] by employing analytic representations of the pair correlations due to Gori-Giorgi [Phys. Rev. B 61, 7353 (2000)] as a function of the uniform electron density. Then, in r space, consideration is given to differential equations proposed by Dawson and March [Phys. Chem. Liq. 14, 131 (1984)] and also in the recent study of Nagy and Amovilli [J. Chem. Phys. 121, 6640 (2004)]. In both approaches, one-body potentials enter, into which Coulombic interelectronic repulsions are subsumed. Finally, Gaskell's [Proc. Phys. Soc. London 77, 1182 (1961)] variational ground-state wave function is shown to be related to the OZ direct correlation function in k space
The application of high temperature superconducting materials to power switches
Superconducting switches may nd application in superconducting magnet systems that
require energy extraction. Such superconducting switches could be bypass-switches that
are operated in conjunction with a parallel resistor or dump-switches where all of the
energy is dissipated in the switch itself. Bypass-switches are more suited to higher energy
circuits as a portion of the energy can be dissipated in the external dump resistor. Dump-switches
require less material and triggering energy as a lower switch resistance is needed
to achieve the required total dump resistance. Both superconducting bypass-switches and superconducting dump-switches can be thermally
activated. Switching times that are comparable to those obtained with mechanical
bypass-switch systems can be achieved using a co-wound heater that is powered by a capacitor
discharge. Switches that have fast thermal diffusion times through the insulation
can be modelled as a lumped system whereas those with slow thermal diffusion times were
modelled with the full heat diffusion equation.Superconducting switches can be formed of either high temperature superconductors
(HTS) or low temperature superconductors (LTS). Switches based on HTS materials allow
operation at higher temperatures where the cost of cooling is less. Extracting the magnet
energy and depositing the heater energy at higher temperatures will also reduce the load on
the overall cryogenic system during switching and energy extraction. For magnet circuits
that are based on high temperature superconductors the switch must also be formed of
HTS material. Due to the approximately T3 dependence of specific heat capacity, switches
that operate at higher temperatures have slower heat diffusion times and require higher
triggering energies than those operating at low temperature. HTS based dump-switches
and HTS based bypass-switches were tested in liquid nitrogen to show that the required
switching time could be achieved at these high temperatures. The design and optimisation of superconducting switches that were formed of various
superconducting materials were performed for example magnet circuits to provide reference
designs of switches. These example circuits were based on selected Large Hadron Collider
600 A circuits that had a stored energy of 5.5 kJ. Superconducting switches may also nd
application in magnet circuits with higher transport currents and higher energies. The
scaling and suitability of the reference designs to higher energy circuits was also described
Intimate Partner Cyberstalking: Exploring Vulnerable Narcissism, Secondary Psychopathy, Borderline Traits, and Rejection Sensitivity
Intimate partner cyberstalking refers to the monitoring and controlling of an intimate partner through technologies. Unlike the cyberstalking of strangers, less is known about the motives and perpetration of intimate partner cyberstalking. In this study, we explore how vulnerable narcissism, secondary psychopathy, and borderline traits (i.e., the "Vulnerable Dark Triad") and rejection sensitivity relate to the perpetration of intimate partner cyberstalking. Participants (N = 278; 58 percent women) were recruited through social media and completed an anonymous online questionnaire. Positive correlations were observed between vulnerable narcissism, secondary psychopathy, borderline traits, rejection sensitivity, and intimate partner cyberstalking. Borderline traits moderated the relationship between participant sex (men and women) and intimate partner cyberstalking, and women with high borderline traits were most likely to cyberstalk intimate partners. Lastly, there was a significant indirect effect of vulnerable narcissism on intimate partner cyberstalking through rejection sensitivity. These findings highlight the importance of relational insecurity and rejection sensitivity in intimate partner cyberstalking and provide useful directions for future research exploring cyberstalking behaviors in intimate relationships
Hookean atom with four electrons: On the formation of a tetrahedral Wigner molecule in the weak trapping limit
Abstract: Numerical results are presented on states 5Su and 3Pg of the Hookean atom with four electrons. Using standard ab initio quantum chemistry methods, the quintet configuration is shown to be the ground state for the weak harmonic trapping constant k. For large k values, there is a crossover to the triplet 3Pg ground state. Finally, it is concluded that the Coulombic potential energy approaches the localized electron limit of a tetrahedral Wigner molecule as the harmonic force constant k tends to zero
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
