    Investigating reengineering teams in the context of business process change

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University, 27/06/2000.This research is concerned with investigating reengineering teams in the context of business process change, or more widely known, business process reengineering (BPR). Business Process Change, on the one hand, is still considered as being an approach that is required in recent times. Reengineering teams (teams that are involved with the planning, analysis and design of the approach) on the other hand, have been viewed to be essential for the development and implementation of BPR. Bearing these points in mind, it was discovered that although the reengineering teams area warrants attention, there has been little attention paid to it. In the reengineering area, specifically, this research aims to address two main issues: first, the role of reengineering teams in business process change and second, the human and organisational aspects that surround the teams. For this, the research applied several steps and they are described in the following paragraphs. To discover the role of the reengineering teams in the context of business process change, it was initially assumed that the foundations of the BPR lie in organisational change. Using this assumption, it became simpler and clearer to determine the exact role of teams. With regards to the human and organisational aspects, a strategy unique to the topic was adopted. At the outset, some human and organisational aspects that are more commonly found in the organisational behaviour and psychology areas were revealed and research with regards to these particular aspects was described. Whilst that was the theoretical side of the research, the research then had to determine whether the deductions formed from the theoretical side were evident in practice. For the empirical results, the research used a combination of approaches in order to obtain the desired results. A qualitative approach that has its foundations in Interpretivism was the methodology used in the research. The ontology assumed then that subjective meanings could be assumed to reconstruct reality. Evidence from practice was obtained using initially, two pilot studies. Further, a multiple case study strategy and the research techniques of mainly, interviews and referring to archival documents were utilised. Once the data was analysed, a theory that could be used for future research in the reengineering teams area was developed. This was arrived at using a combination of certain grounded theory techniques, particularly, the forming of categories and coding. The findings suggested that reengineering teams are imperative for BPR and that some of the selected human and organisational aspects are evident in the newly formed theory

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Marine Oil Spill Incidents from Sea-Going Tankers: An idiographic exploration of the spill effects on structure, culture and behaviour in risk and collective incident management

    The 1967 Torrey Canyon incident established that the transportation of persistent oil by sea is a significantly risky business with a potential for great environmental harm. The incident propelled the development of international conventions for standards of operation and payment of compensation to those affected by a tanker oil spill. Affectation has meant going beyond economic outcomes to encompass social and political outcomes particularly where there is a likelihood of severe environmental impact. The oil transportation risk today is therefore different from the risk thirty years ago. As a result the perception and roles of involved parties in managing the risks and incidents have also been affected. However, despite significant investment in plans and preparedness, this has not always brought about full social acceptance, and there has still been failure, indicating that risk management is more than preparedness. It is proposed that management and behaviour during incident management are factors that create uncertainties despite highly reliable systems. Established methodologies, on evaluating risk, risk management and incident management conceptually and contextually, have been somewhat limited in their ability to view behaviour as a risk factor with direct significance to the management of the risk, incident and society. The study constructs a narrative account of the structural facts and behavioural aspects in oil spill risks and incident management establishing connections between them. Exploration of both the outer-inner and inner-outer context is achieved by way of a case study of the context of tanker oil spills. Observations of behaviour are derived from the interviews with parties involved in risk and incident management and from participation in organised spill incident simulations (both computer-based and physical).</p

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     The structure and catalytic behaviour of supported rhodium and rhodium/palladium nanoparticles

    Energy Dispersive Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EDE), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) have been employed as principle techniques to investigate the local structure and catalytic properties of Rh and Rh/Pd nanoparticles supported on Y-AI2O3. The Rh catalyst systems were prepared with a metal loading &amp; om 2.5wt% to 10wt%, and included systems prepared with chlorinated and nitrated precursors. The Rh/Pd systems were prepared with a combination of the metal components that did not exceed 5wt%. All of the Rh only systems exhibited a rapid room temperature oxidation in their '6esh' states, which was seen to be a recurring trend with the chlorinated systems, irrespective of particle size depicted by TEM. The oxidation, also delineated by XPS, under these conditions was seen on the highly dispersed systems, which would not be predicted by the low dispersed, bulk case. The nitrated Rh systems exhibited a reduced propensity for the oxidation, and EXAFS and TEM data reported that particle size effects were not the reason for the observed structural differences. Re-oxidation of the systems after exposure to H2 did appear to vary with metal loading, pointing to a structural factor. However, the dynamic equilibrium between the oxidised and reduced Rh phases was still present. These differences were not propagated under the catalytic conditions employed, which was the reduction of NO by H2. All of the systems exhibited virtually the same activity and selectivity, and the consequent production of N2O could therefore be assigned to be intrinsic to the bi-stable Rh nanoparticles. After 'light off and the collapse of the oxidised Rh phase, particulate Rh was seen to be very selective for the reduction of NO to N2. The introduction of an adjunct metal, palladium, to these systems to potentially remove the bi-stable Rh phase and unwanted production of N2O resulted in alloying between the components and a segregation of Pd to the surface of the particles, shown by XPS. Both the EDE and XPS results showed varying the loading of Pd could subsequently change the phase of the Rh, and therefore the Rh could be insulated against the aforementioned oxidation. However, although the phase was eliminated, the production of N2O was found to be an intrinsic catalytic property of Pd, and no 'intermediate' phase was found to exist. The study of a physically mixed sample found the system, somewhat surprisingly, to be the 'desired' catalyst in the scope of this study. The Pd component was found to 'communicate' with the Rh via what was most likely H2 spillover. This meant that although the oxidation of the discrete Rh component still transpired, the promotion of this phase to the highly selective metallic phase occurred at much lower light off temperatures compared to the alloyed systems. The absence of 'Pd-like' behaviour, when compared to the 'Pd-only' system, showed a physical result of the proposed Hz spillover. However, for the elimination of consequent N2O production and an understanding of the complex processes occurring over all of the systems studied, further work and concepts need to be evoked. In summary, the m time resolved, double edge EDE/MS experiments has allowed the observation of a range of dynamic processes occurring over the catalyst systems during the reduction of NO by H2. The complimentaiy probes utilised showed the physical behaviour of the systems in unprecedented detail, both statically and in time- resolved studies.</p
